lost a little weight

I was noticing that the macbook is listed at 5.0 lbs (2.27 kg), older macbooks are listed at 5.1 lbs (2.31 kg)

maybe this is the ultraportable they were talking about!! :D

Hardware

well, the same ingredients don't necessarily make the same meal.
I can cook from the same stuff as your mom - which meal would you choose?

Apple just tastes better :)

Especially, after considering that the hardware, encasement, and assembly parts are generally of a higher grade than the components thrown together by Dell.

.4 kg difference -- ultra indeed....

I haven't been using my macbook all that long yet, but for basic stuff the battery life is ridiculous!

Got One

Just picked one up tonight. My wife's Toshiba laptop died about a month ago and I promised her a Macbook but was waiting for the update. She is happy and I am happy that she no longer needs to use my iMac. Little does she know that I will find a way to make that Macbook mine too :D

Why do you think this is true? Granted the ExpressCard is one thing, but there aren't too many machines out there that have a FW800 port, backlit keyboard, and support for a 30" display standard. The extra $500 is worth it.

Point out to your typical potential switcher that the MacBook doesn't have a PC card slot, and what's the response? ;)

What's FW800? Is that related to the failed 1394b project? USB 2.0 killed FireWire - get over it. Move on.

30" display - how many mid-range laptop users will worry about whether a laptop will support an LCD display that costs much more than the laptop itself?

I have seen some people complaining about the US to Canadian price differences. But no-one is complaining about the Australian price differences (maybe I just missed it is someone did).

1099US$ = 1,197AU$

Yet we pay 1599AU$
A 400AU$ difference!!! (367US$)

Our dollar is nearly equal to the US dollar. I suppose they have to factor shipping but I still think this is unacceptable

macbook w/ led's?

i haven't been keeping up w/ the macbooks... do they have led lcd monitors yet?

LED backlit monitors

i haven't been keeping up w/ the macbooks... do they have led lcd monitors yet?

To date, LED backlit displays are appearing in the 15in MacBook Pros. We'll likely see migration to all LED during 2008. They're still working on the 17in models - a challenge still, and hopefully will soon happen.

Well I *had* to buy before the end of 2007 for various reasons so today I ordered a black (gotta love paying $150 for the color) Macbook 2.2 with 2 GB of RAM and a 250 GB hard drive. I am very happy with the update despite wishing that it would be a case update. *I* believe that Macworld in January will bring a new Macbook PRO case update but no new Macbooks until March-May I suspect.

Well, lets have a civil discussion about what makes a Mac a Mac shall we?

Im going to use some comparisons that people already feel are not valid. Hopefully by the time I'm done you will see they are valid.

Lets compare your average Dell machine with your average Apple machine.
The hardware inside should break down to something like this. This is very simplified, but this is how I look at it. Inside every computer you will find these items:

CPU Socket
RAM Slots
Northbridge
Southbridge
IO Ports (USB/FW/e-SATA/PS2/Audio etc)
Expansion slots.
Intel CPU
RAM
GPU

Again, that is very simplified, but you get the point. Now lets break this down.

A Dell has a S775 CPU socket. An Apple machine has a S775 CPU socket.
A Dell has RAM slots. An Apple machine has RAM slots.
A Dell uses an Intel supplied Northbridge. An Apple machine uses an Intel supplied Northbridge.
A Dell uses an Intel supplied Southbridge. An Apple machine uses an Intel supplied Southbridge.
A Dell has Expansion Slots. Some Apple machines have expansion slots.
A Dell machine has IO ports. Apple machines have... You guessed it IO ports as well.
Some/most Dells use Intel CPUs. Apple Uses Intel CPUs.
Dell Uses DDR spec RAM. Apple uses DDR spec RAM.
Dell uses Intel GMA/Nvidia/ATI GPUs. Apple uses Intel GMA/Nvidia/ATI GPUs.

So, What do you get from that? The vast majority of the hardware seems the same to me. So what is it that makes a Mac a Mac? Ahh... OS X. But as its already been stated, that too can run on a Dell. After all, Its OpenBSD with a pretty window manager overtop.

So really.. The only things that I can come up with as to what makes a Mac a Mac is.... 1) The Apple logo on the outside. Once it receives that Apple logo it magically ceases to be a PC, even though it still uses generic PC hardware. 2) TPM.

Maybe its more than that. Maybe its a status thing that makes a Mac a Mac. Maybe its the Premium price tag. Maybe its that your buying into a "community". Maybe its some VERY brilliant marketing. IMHO the difference went away when Intel hardware was brought into the picture.

Anyone care to debate this with me? Im not putting this out as flame bate, I just wanna have a real conversation about this!
glad to see there are other people that see this. I've always seen this and it's ridiculous i think. To me, paying double to triple the price for the same pc parts is insane no matter how good the operating system is. Mac mini/imac are worth the price bc their size etc. A base laptop from apple is $1099....that same laptop can be had for $500 from dell. If you want new users to switch to your company why would they want to pay more than double for the same specs? If they don't know you're operating system in the first place, why would they want to learn for $600 more?

i really don't understand apple's situation with pricing. They go from having the normal overcharge price on the iphone which is standard apple practice. Then they are beating out everything in terms of price for what you get. Why can't they do this with their computers? If they did that they would snatch them up like hotcakes. I have friends/family always ask me advice about computers and which one to buy. They always say hey, what about apple iheard they are really good and easy to use. I just can't say hey, you should get a macbook it's a great value. Usually they have some kind of budget, so if you're shopping apple a budget really isn't there haha. Apple needs to adjust the pricing for MB, MBP, and MP to the rest of the market. They need a base laptop under $999.

...A base laptop from apple is $1099....that same laptop can be had for $500 from dell...

OK, you've got my attention. I haven't seriously looked at Dell laptops since someone I knew went through FIVE of them (one of which actually started to smoke) before getting one that worked well enough to keep.

Anyway, please provide a link to a $500 Dell with the same specs, size, weight, etc as the MacBook. Seriously. I may want to pick one up for a cheap 2nd computer. I'm just too lazy to look it up for myself.

Your tempting me mate!!! I might buy now and sell it...? I am not sure if I want to go through the hassle of selling the laptop on eBay or anything though?

Mitch

I sold my Vaio in 12 hours. Use "Buy it Now", it kicks butt.

And i may do the same if its really really worth it in May when the new one comes out.

Need wireless hep with fios

I went out and purchased my first mac today macbook 2.2ghz 1gbram. anyway i have verizon fios and can not get the mac hooked up to the network wirelessly. I dont have a airport extreme base station. Just the router verizon gave me. The mac connects through ethernet.
I knew fios didnt support wireless mac's but i thought they would support them by now

For video recording/editing, FireWire is still king.

The USB 2.0 vs. FW800 is another example of the MHz myth. Although similar on paper in burst rate, most RW tests show that the sustained throughput of FW800 is much higher.

So the "victory" of USB 2.0 vs. FW800 is another technological tragedy akin to the death of Betamax.

Full Disclosure

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pissed right now. My MBP arrived 3 days ago (minus leopard). I rang Apple to see if I could get an upgrade or refund. They said even though the cooling off period is 10 days, I cannot return mine because it was a CUSTOM order. I chose the high-res screen and 7200rpm HDD. So I havent even used the computer yet. Im waiting for them to send me Leopard now..... I just spent $4000 on this machine, was wanting to get top of the line and it is already 2nd best and I havent even used it.

I would pay the extra to get the 2.6Ghz

I went to a local Apple store before placing my order and asked a sales person if I should wait another week or 2 in case Apple updated their computers with Leopard. He said "DEFINITELY NOT, THERE WILL BE NO UPGRADE BEFORE JANUARY". He also convinced me to order online.

Might I add that my MBP was not due to arrive until Nov 6 - 11th. They shipped it early. I can't express how upset I am.

And they say there is nothing I can do about it.

Maybe you can get Milberg Weiss to take on your case! I believe you entered into a contract that clearly stated that custom orders are not returnable. Once you clicked "I agree" you are bound by what is in the contract.
It sucks, but that is why one should ALWAYS read the contract/agreement before signing/clicking.

Its a joke that they still have a drive without a dvd burner. If that option cost £10 more with a superdrive, TONS of people would get it...

Exactly. Which is why it's not available. It basically works out, as a BTO on the low end model, to paying $125 for a superdrive. Over the two or three year life of the computer, its likely worth it.

BTW, I too am puzzled (for that matter, very disappointed) at the Apple Canada pricing on MacBooks. There is no reason why the Canadian price should not be the same as or less than the U.S. price. I had recently commended Apple Canada for having fairer pricing for its newly released products, but I see it has gone back to its old ways again.

Looks like I'll probably buy my next Mac on a road trip to Washington state.

Cost of owning a MacBook per day

Out of curiosity I did quick calculation on the cost of owning my black MacBook. Here are my numbers

Total cost of MacBook in 2006 USD $1399 + $150 (MS Office) +$60 (RAM) = $1609

I plan to own for 3 years.

Cost of ownership = $1.47 per day (excluding electricity off course).

My MacBook has replaced cable TV which can cost $2520 for 3 years ($70 per month).

Having my PC laptop crash 2-6 times during 1 recording session and sometimes loose valuable data brought me to a point where I was loosing more than actually making as I was found 'not professional'.
43 days now since I got my first mac... and I'm in work flow heaven (even better today after having my MB replaced to the SR platform).
If I knew the difference is THAT big I would pay $1K easy just to have that confidence when starting a live project for example.
My switch to Mac was like coming out of a hurricane into a perfect weather.
And It was all worth it

Actually, even lowly FW400 has better real-world throughput than USB 2.0, especially when you've got multiple devices on the chain. FW800 totally kills USB 2.0.

I'm seeing more and more PCs coming with FW, so I'd hardly call it "dead". Of course, the decision to make the connector different for FW800 was pretty dumb, and Apple doesn't seem to be doing much to promote FW these days, so who knows what'll happen in the long run.

0.95 Canadian Loonie = 1.00 USD

I agree it should be a little less, but Apple like most company is slow to change in response to currency volatility. Oh well.
