The Sony CR is a consumer laptop like the MB. Some people will prefer the 14.1 inch Sony screen to the MB. To many people the 13.3 screen that the MB has will not be an advantage. Different people will favour different things.

The SZ is in a different class to the MB. It is a mid end to high end business laptop.
Those are all 14.1" devices. Try to grab a 13.3" Sony for that price. Good Luck. A friend of mine ended up paying more than I for a Vaio SZ with nearly the same specs as my MacBook. Only difference he got a Geforce M with shared memory in addition the the 950GMA and his has 1.6GHz (no ULV) while mine has 2.0 GHZ.
The Sony is a few pounds lighter but the MacBook runs smooth 2h more on battery (it's battery is larger).
The Sony looks awesome but the MacBook still hast the finer Design with less edges etc. plus the SZ only has VGA, no DVI.

I wasn't sure about whether anyone had any benchmarks on the new GPU yet or not, compared to the old, but I just had a brain-wave that I'm sure many others had. Perhaps the boost with the new card is so little, it's the reason this was more of a stealth update, as nothing else is truly spectacular about it, so if the graphics aren't stupendous, why draw attention to them...

Probably already been mentioned, but just wanted to put it out there. I'm eager to see a comparison between the two. I know it'd be partly useful, but I'm also not expecting much.

I found one difference with the newer models from skimming the manual. They are using the new media keys like the new keyboards. Here is a grab from the manual.

Nice... now my hand will have to span all the way across the keyboard to adjust the sound (I use the fn key for such things so I can use the function keys in my apps).

I just ordered:
  • BlackBook 2GB
  • iWork '08
  • iPod Touch 16GB
  • And an Incase 13.3" Sleeve

I'm at college so I qualify for the Apple Further Education discount obviously..

Obviously NOT.

One has to be over 18 to qualify, even though that's when you LEAVE college

I feel completely screwed over.
Well I'll just have to use the standard Education Discount then.
Oh no, that only applies to Teachers now.
So I'm in full time Further Education, am trying to buy £1350 odd of your stuff, and you're telling me I don't get any discount whatsoever.

That is abysmal, Apple. I'm really, really disappointed.

:(

However for most countries, College is from 18 onwards. Here we have College at 16-18 as an opt-in option, elsewhere they're still at school at those ages and it's opt-out. Since the offer generally refers to Higher Education and not Further Education (which you are currently in), I don't feel you have been misled.

Edit: Just went to the UK store to see what the terms and conditions were and it's down for an update. US store fine however.

Well at the very least I could just get the standard Education Discount then.. Oh wait, no I can't.
He said that for the Further Ed. I'd need to be 18, doing A-Levels.
Well I'm 16, doing A-Levels, obviously that means I'm supposed to have more money

Well actually WoW doesn't require THAT much to run. Just loads of RAM. A descent videocard isn't really needed, I would just like to know some average FPS and maybe some other benchmarks besides WoW?

Goodness knows, but regarding WoW, it even runs fairly smoothly on my old G4 Powerbook (1.33, Geforce Go5200) so if anyone has problems running that on a modern Mac I'll be shocked! Are those Intel graphics chips actually worse than this card from ~4 years ago?

Regarding LEDs, can't see it happening on the Macbook, only the Macbook Pro (at least until they come out with another killer feature to restrict to the Pro line). Like with the iMac 20 and 24s, the higher quality screen is there to sell the higher end models.

I haven't been using my macbook all that long yet, but for basic stuff the battery life is ridiculous!

do you mean long or short?

Just order the low end one but upgraded RAM to 2GB.

This is fine for me as I don't burn dvd's
I only currently use 40GB of RAM and I don't think its worth upgrading for the 200mhz faster processor speed.

cant wait (the extra days for customizing are a bit annoying though) :)

my mac book shipped on the 31st of october expected delivery date 10th november. Does this mean i have the older version or would apple have shipped an updated model?

You may get a parent to pay on your behalf (you pay them back) and still get it under 18. You are just not allowed to pay yourself. Hope you haven't already ordered.

Because I'm in Further Education, yet it doesn't apply to me, whereas a person who is 18 at exactly the same college as me, doing the same courses, gets a big discount.

Well, the thing is that Apple is not required to give anyone any discount, students included.

Yup, paid on my Debit Card.

& Evangelion, I wouldn't mind if there was no offer at all, but at least offer it to everyone at college, not just the second years.

The Education discounts are the same for Further Education and Higher Education... It is the 'Education' store that has the worst discount. I'm doing a Further Education course in Oxford in my spare time and I checked Higher Education prices on the computers... it's exactly the same as what I was quoted from the Further Education e-mails.

Hope that helps.
