Dell isn't the best place to compare
Anyway, please provide a link to a $500 Dell with the same specs, size, weight, etc as the MacBook. Seriously. I may want to pick one up for a cheap 2nd computer. I'm just too lazy to look it up for myself.
You should go spec out a Sony VAIO CR series:

A 2.2 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, x3100 GPU, 120 GB HD costs 1099.00. That's the same specs as the mid-level Macbook for 200.00 less.

glad to see there are other people that see this. I've always seen this and it's ridiculous i think. To me, paying double to triple the price for the same pc parts is insane no matter how good the operating system is. Mac mini/imac are worth the price bc their size etc. A base laptop from apple is $1099....that same laptop can be had for $500 from dell.

Identical Dell laptop:

Omg

I had a very bad day and didn't want to turn on my computer. But as soon as I did, this just MADE my day in the last minute! I've been waiting so long! The day finally came! Well... it's not THAT a big upgrade as some of us expected, though I actually like the fact that they keep it White not Aluminum. The only thing I'm so disappointed is the Canadian store price, as a lot of you have already mentioned. Why did they par the price for Leopard but not the machine?!!??? I'm going through online store now to purchase, but still wondering if I can use my Canadian student card to get a US student discount price????

THIS JUST IN:

Sometimes, you pay extra for something that is more desirable.

Shocking.

Personal/professional experience with Sony: everything is ok as long as you don't need their customer service/repair service... I had my Sony Vaio sent for repair under warranty and for some strange reasons was diagnosed water infiltrations!, therefore not under warranty anymore!

The repair quote was 800 euro, 1150 US$ which I found outrageous, also they messed with the proof of the water, in fact after 40 days I got a pic of the nside with clear brown colored stains (water?).

Got my Sony un-repaired back, bought a Macbook Pro, transferred Windows apps and data, happy as never before!

Those are all 14.1" devices. Try to grab a 13.3" Sony for that price. Good Luck. A friend of mine ended up paying more than I for a Vaio SZ with nearly the same specs as my MacBook. Only difference he got a Geforce M with shared memory in addition the the 950GMA and his has 1.6GHz (no ULV) while mine has 2.0 GHZ.
The Sony is a few pounds lighter but the MacBook runs smooth 2h more on battery (it's battery is larger).
The Sony looks awesome but the MacBook still hast the finer Design with less edges etc. plus the SZ only has VGA, no DVI.

anybody have an idea if it is now able to get a 1080p output on a external tv? may be 24 fps?? if yes, i will update mine

If I get a new MacBook with 1GB ram, and then installed 2-4GB (taking out the 2x512MB) myself, would that void the warranty?

I'd just like to say that after reading this thread from the begining I can fist of all buy my macbook but NO ONE HAD THE DATE RIGHT. lol

Long overdue, they should have done this in May when they updated the MacBooks. Poor form Apple.

A lot of questions. Let talk about it...

If this is the rumored update why wasn't there a press release for it. During the last update and even the Mini's speed bump we at least had little "faster speed" icons on the Apple Store. The MacBook product page doesn't make a single mention of how it's "now" faster. How come there isn't a single mention of the speed bump at all? What I mean is why isn't Apple obviously pointing it out?

It might not be a significant update which is why there wasn't a press event but to not even mention it at all just seems so un-Apple like. At the end of the day Apple is the kind of company that loves to brag (even if just a little) about everything it does. Just seems strange with all the rumors of an update (including so called analyst predictions) that there'd be no mention of it at all. Just a quiet change on the website with nothing to point it out.

Why wouldn't Apple jump at the opportunity for free advertising of the MacBoook? It couldn't possibly hurt sales could it? Actually wouldn't it encourage sales from the "waiting for the next update" crowd?

Am I alone on this one? Is there something more? Is it possible Apple has something up it's sleeve? Would they bring out a new model so quickly after an update, even a silent one actually especially after a silent one? Could that be why they're being quiet about it?

How hard would it have been for apple to update the chipset? Does it require reworking the motherboard? I don't see how it would. In other words is there any investment required of Apple (R&D, engineering, capital, production equipment, etc.) other than to simply use the new chipset (and maybe test it for stability)?

With the increase in MacBook shipments over the last quarter and the expected growth during the holiday season do you suppose Apple had to update the chipset so they'd have enough chips to keep up with demand while still supplying the Mac Mini? Could Intel have forced the update by giving Apple better pricing on the new chips thereby increasing Apple's profit margin slightly and putting more focus on Intel's current technology? Could Apple just have bought a huge quantity of the new chips to be used in the next revision of the MacBook, guaranteeing better pricing, increasing current margins and building up inventory for the MacBook that hasn't surfaced yet? What if there really is a new case design, but the motherboard, production equipment and testing isn't complete...could that be why this "silent" update happened?

I know, I've asked a lot of questions. Hopefully I got a few brain cells working on this forum. It'd be interesting to discuss it further.

I recently sold my MBP (cd1) very first gen due to certain issues
(2.0GHz x 2gigs ram).
1. it got too hot.
2. it gave me electric shocks.

Now if we compare that computer with the latest blackbook with 2gigs of ram, do you think it will be slower?

Thanks

Mark

I was tempted to quote myself but it's kinda lame so I won't do it...

Anyway I don't get why people start a PRO-PC discussion on a MAC forum...

I think there will never be enough to run World of Warcraft. I have seen sb playing that in his PC without any a little lag several months ago. He spend about $20,000 on that beast.

Well actually WoW doesn't require THAT much to run. Just loads of RAM. A descent videocard isn't really needed, I would just like to know some average FPS and maybe some other benchmarks besides WoW?

Also: The Apple store in the Netherlands is updated now, and there is an ad saying: "The new Macbook, now with Intel Core 2 Duo-processor up to 2,2 gHz". I recon UK and other stores in Europe should be updated by now.

So the "victory" of USB 2.0 vs. FW800 is another technological tragedy akin to the death of Betamax.

Off-topic but.... Betamax died because it sucked. Yes, it might have had better picture-quality. But you could record a full-length movie on a VHS-tape, whereas with Betamax you had to change sides on the tape in the middle of the movie, and that meant disrupting the recording for 10 seconds or so. It also made un-attended recording impossible.

For the people complainign about the combo drive...

You would expect the low end to come with something less then the high end, no?

Sure. The low-end model can have smaller HD, less RAM, slower CPU... But shipping a combo-drive in this day and age is embarrasing. It's just slight step above from shipping the computer with a floppy-drive!

So, What do you get from that? The vast majority of the hardware seems the same to me. So what is it that makes a Mac a Mac? Ahh... OS X. But as its already been stated, that too can run on a Dell.

Not legally. Your argument is similar to the old argument of "iTunes )or any other music store) is too expensive! I mean, I can download those same songs from P2P for free!". Yes, it might be hard to compete legally with illegal. But it still does not make for a valid comparison.

After all, Its OpenBSD with a pretty window manager overtop.

Mostly FreeBSD, not OpenBSD.

So really.. The only things that I can come up with as to what makes a Mac a Mac is

a) Design

b) The fact that the hardware and software are designed for each other and are made by the same company. Good luck getting everything to work smoothly on that OS X-running Dell

c) Yes, OS X.

Anyone care to debate this with me?

Sure. Considering that you got basics like FreeBSD and OpenBSD wrong and went along comparing illegal activities with legal activities, I think the resulting discussion would be a pushover.
