Hah! It turns out I bought it at Best Buy and I'm within the 30 day return window.

I no longer have a Time Capsule. Best Buy took mine back and issued a refund. I'll check tomorrow if they or the Apple Store have the 2 TB version. I was 2 days away from the point of no return. Whew! Lucky me. I also found out that Best Buy will honor academic pricing on Apple gear (I'm a part time educator).

Just my luck. I just bought one. I know Apple's return policy is 14 days. I'm on 21 days tomorrow. Am I SOL?

No, I've returned things beyond the 14 day period at multiple Apple Stores. They've always been really nice about it. I think they know their return policy is shorter than most of their competitors. If someone gives you a hard time, I'd just mention that you'd be able to return their device if you'd purchased it from one of their competitors (ie. bestbuy) and you shouldn't be punished for purchasing directly from them.

The VM file is actually a bundle, with some config files and then a binary that is the Windows virtual hard drive image. That image is by far the big byte-eater here, so the way to handle your issue is to somehow mount that on the OS X side. At that point Time Machine will treat it like any other mounted disk.

Luckily, Parallels has a tool to do just that: Parallels Mounter. Presto! Incremental backups of your Win data. If you were to ever recover from a disk loss you'd have to recreate the Parallels virtual machine, but you'd be able to clone the data back to Windows after setting it up.

Do the new ones still run scorching hot? My AirPort Extreme is only warm, but the Time Capsules are always red-hot.

Do you want "thin", or "cool"?

With Apple, "thin" usually means "hot".

Weeeell, AFAIK the TC was never flogged as being "super-thin", since it really isn't. They did say it offered "blazingly fast" backups (actually very slow) and that the TC contains a "server-grade" hard drive (actually just a cheapo Hitachi.)

But it's got an Apple logo on it!!!

Does any know how can i get a Time Capsule without HD in it ?

even second hand would be fine for me too....
because i have got a 1.5TB HD at my home, just wanted to put it into a time capsule...

I think I might get the 1TB version, and do away with my 1TB FW800 Seagate.

Having a MBP, it's a pain to back-up my data. I've been thinking of the Time Capsule for a while.

Quick question, how 'slow' are these puppies at wirelessly backing up? Real-world examples, if possible.

Also, can I attached the TC to my Netgear DG843 router/modem, have the Netgear for band 'g' and the TC for 'n'?

I think that takes care of all my questions!

Cheers.

Hey Apple, it'd actually be a cool and keen idea to have one of these...but how about you make them solid and not flake out every few months.
MY AEBSn (pre-dualband) flaked out on wifi, dual-band AEBSn same story, now my 500GB dual-band timecapsule is doing that.
i have my backups stored and a moderate itunes library on there running almost 24/7 since March now it wants to crap out (the wifi not the drive)

Ive read too many people with problems if youre actually using it alittle bitmore than what they advertise it for. even then it doesnt perform as good as it should, im on my replacement TC so hopefully this will actually last awhile longer.:mad:

You can connect it via ethernet or wifi to distribute either or.
But why even do that when the TimeCapsule has dual band and guest networking which you can set the speeds for.

the updates are relatively the same id say USB back up..moderately slow but the first one is the usual pain in the arse...just because it indexes similar to spotlight where it has to account for every little bit and byte.
after that ive had relative quick backups 2GB ~ 15GB under 30minutes when i was using wireless

A lot of servers Ive seen use Hitachi drivers. Never gonna buy from those OEMs again.

Come on at least use Samsung or Seagate.

Thanks for that, really helpful.

Why do I keep reading about how slow the TC is? Are those reports based on an earlier firmware or hardware revision? Some people were reporting that it took a week to back up 50GB! Wowzer!

I've been really disappointed with my Dual-Band TimeCapsule.
the wireless connectivity to the drive has been subpar to say the least and the stability of it too has been shotty.
I was really hoping it would be a stellar performance device and solid all around but oh well.
They tried :p

They could definitely make the TC slimmer (same size as a macbookpro) using 2.5" drives (2 500gb for 1tb raid, or 2 1tb 2.5" in raid for 2tb)
but id imagine the prices would be even higher.

:D its cool though

Could the stability be down to your configuration, or your home layout (thick walls, interference, etc)?

Would you not recommend the TC then?

I've had a 1TB TC running 24 * 7 since launch and apart from needing the odd reboot here and there, has been perfectly reliable. I think its a brilliant solution for laptop backups, especially where my wife's concerned as it means she doesn't need to do anything, the backups just happen while she's working.

But still no AirTunes? :(

Exactly my issue: I'd like to replace my AEBSn + AE for AirTunes and iphone etc+ 2 HDD's for TM by 1 single device, but the new TC seems again not to have AirTunes. I wonder why they don't add that, now you have all the extra clutter if you want AirTunes.

Some questions..

I have one of those Neil Poulton 1TB HDs - works great, had it for nearly a year now, but it's around 70% capacity..

The gf has now got her first Mac, so we really want a wireless HD - do you think the 1TB capsule is good for backups and general storage? Can you partition the capsule so we have say 50% each? Or do we just create our own folders on it?

Also we've been trying in vain to get the printer running wirelessly on our Macs, you think the capsule would make it easier?

I was looking at the capsules over the weekend, but decided they were too pricey, now the 1TB is in budget..

Edit: also sorry, I'm in the UK, but say I brought one over from the States, (some family are going to LA next week, I'm ordering an MBP to my sis address there which they can pick up for me, save a lot of cash) would it work the same here also - you guys don't use any different frequency or anything on wireless, just to be sure :shame:

i would when they configure their signal strengths a bit better.
i like them but i couldnt really give a 5/5.

my house is pretty open and there have been no interference from cells, cordless, other wifi.
its been in the same spot since It was set up. so all of a sudden its been putting out laggy connection to the internal disk and WAN.

Perhaps it could be a firmware issue, but ive tried the only two firmware revisions that is available on mine and still no luck.

Looks like Apple dropped the refurbed single band 500gb TC by $10 to a whopping $189.00. What a deal...

They've updated the Apple UK store. My god, what a rip off.

The 2TB version is £379.00 - that's $626.75 USD.

Seriously, Apple tax in the UK is pissing me off now. You can almost get a new Mac Mini for that price. Absolutely ridiculous.
