Quiet the riot...

The riots will begin soon from people who just bought the old models at the old prices . . .

Well, I bought my 1TB Timecapsule last summer, and likely would still have been in a snit about the the better value this year [okay, yes, I AM shallow...] but since I never backed up before I bought the Timecapsule, and just this morning used it for the first time to save my family's website from non-existence, I will choose to be happy that I bought the product. I think I am the exact target market...more credit than is good for me and not enough computer knowledge or energy to figure out the cheaper alternatives.

I am interested in picking up a 500GB TC for under $200.

Too bad Apple's website only has the 276LL/A model for $190, which does NOT include dual band or guest network, two features I want.

Guess I have to play the waiting game.

Other than size(capacity) whats the diff between my AppleTv and a Time Capsule? Does the Time Capsule have its on mini OS like the AppleTv?

I ask this because i would love to upgrade the drive in my AppleTv and maybe partition it for use as half AppleTv and half TC for Backups....

Anyone??? Would it even be possible?

So Amazon is saying it's up for pre-order. Anyone know what the deal is? I thought it was out ....

Is there a way to use Time Machine to backup to 2 difference sources. For example, if I want to backup my music to DriveA and backup my data to DriveB.. or am I stuck with a single backup destination?

By default, Time Machine will back up your whole system. You can exclude folders from your back up, but it won't do what you are asking.

at this point no.

i am in the same boat sort of. I actually decided to just put my music on an external drive and run it off that. however for the sake of not losing everything if that drive crashes, I did clone it to another drive and once about every two weeks I add anything new to it.

and then I use TM for the rest of my files.

Welcome to the wonderfull world of apple. Steve must be proud. :D

What a relief...I went back to the store I bought my TC at as soon as I heard about the new line and they agreed to exchange it at no cost. Phewfreakingphew! It just arrived today special order and I'm unwrapping it right now. The first 2 tb TC to arrive at this chain in the whole city and its in my hands. :D There's 140 on order for all other stores. Glad I got on that right away, any delay and it wouldn't have happened.

If you don't ask you don't get.

You know, guys, I had totally forgotten about the Time Capsule. And considering how I'll be working on a thesis before long... I definitely have no need for 2 TB, that's just huge for a writer, but the 1 TB would probably be worth it if something happened to my MacBook while working on the thesis.

Don't need it for at least six years, though. Maybe they'll have come up with something else by then. ;)

Anybody???
You're comparing apples and oranges. AppleTV and Time Capsule are very different devices. You will not be able to use an AppleTV for Time Machine. At least I have not heard of anyone making that work. Its filesystem can not be mounted in the Finder, which Time Machine requires.

Thank you.

I think that should somehow be an option. Especially with the 2TB model. 1TB to serve as an AppleTV, and the other 1TB to act as a TC. Too bad if Apple made it it would probably cost $1000...

not knowing

He, i'm not sure what to do, imwant to use time machine but also use the time capsule as a portable drive is this possible?
Or are there better options for this, also looking at the price.

Regards david

You can use time machine with any external hard drive. This is especially good if you want portability. The only reason to use a time machine is if you need network storage and a router. If you are just looking for storage, go buy a good inexpensive external drive like the Western Digital 1TB drive for $100.

so what you tel me is buy a external drive, use time machine to back up and use the same external drive for extra storage?

airport express

i might not be on thr right thread, but airport express to use that for my stereo set i have to go true a router or can i go straight from the imac to the airport express?

You could do that of course but if you do it would be better to partition the disk and have your TM backup in its own partition. TM will eventually use up all the free space in its partition.

ok i look at a lacie 2TB hardrive that means can use 1drive for TM and 1 drive for extra storage, right?
