Anyone know if these will be in UK store today?

Obviously, they have the 1TB versions already but will the price reductions have been applied, even if they don't physically have the 2TB?

Also, what do they do with all the 500GB versions they have laying around? I've never seen a 'sale' in an apple store so do they send them back to HQ?

I think my mind is set on a 1TB TC. It's going to make life a lot easier!

I'm usually one to say that Apple's products are too expensive but definitely not this.

The average 1TB external hard-drive costs $120 while the average 2GB external hard-drive costs around $250. The average router in this range (which are usually weaker than this one) are about $60. Combine with the simple fact that they are combined and give you a nice new experience from a good brand I wouldn't say these products are too over-priced, especially the 2TB one.

Or you could just buy a WB My Book (1TB) for $100 and do a backup once a week. You'll save $200.

But to each his own.
I don't see the point in updating every day, or do I really care to do it wirelessly.

I don't know where you're getting these average prices, but a 1TB can be had for $90. I see those prices all the time. My D-Link DIR-655 was $130 when I got it a couple years ago, so I value the TC router around maybe around $75 at most since it's a weaker router. That's $165 for the combo. The TC 1TB should be no more than $250.

2TB drives can be had for $220, putting the combo around $295. The TC 2GB at $500 is ridiculous.

Anyone venture to guess when this (2TB) will hit Amazon? I'm inclined to get non-display products off Amazon to save on the tax.

Anyone know when this will be in Apple stores?

About time.

Still, I'd rather see an iTunes Server than 2TB Time Capsule..

you can use the time capsule as an itunes server... simply point your library to the TC....

its slow when you back up your entire library for the 1st time, but after that its gravy... and its not really slow....

All those complaining about price, I want to see you build your own with the exact same capabilities foe cheaper.

Do you want "thin", or "cool"?

With Apple, "thin" usually means "hot".

go to home depot, buy some "peg/stump" looking legs [usually used on furniture to avoid scratching wood floors], apply them to the bottom of the TC with superglue and your TC will have stumps as legs...

The TC will not run hot anymore... just mildly warm

Does anyone actually care about Time Capsule??? Its too slow IMO to be used for backups.

as mentioned before... its slow for the initial backup, and then you should be fine.... WHO IS CONSTANTLY backing up 100 gigs of data?!?!

you should be backing up one huge pile and then very small piles on a reg basis..

anyway, the reason i actually care about the TC is b/c i use it as an ITUNES SERVER.... where i dont have to store all of my music/movies/etc on my 120gb macbook where i cant afford to store 140/+ Gigs of compressed media...

i dont have enough misc. data, nor is it important to use time machine to version/archive my files... my music/movie collection is important to me and i use TC for that...

some people might say "why not get an external hd?" well, being wired defeats the advantage/comfort of storing stuff wirelessly

All those complaining about price, I want to see you build your own with the exact same capabilities foe cheaper.

Why? A lot of people don't care about wifi with their external HD

My WD My Book does the job at 1/3 of the cost. The only diff. is that I have to plug it into my usb port.

Can you guys remind me of the difference(s) between the 1st generation and the 2nd generation Time Capsules? Is it only that the 2nd generation has dual-band capabilities? I remember some other difference(s) were added in a software update.

I have no need for anything above 500GB at the moment so my choices are:
1. get a refurbed 1st generation 500GB
2. hang around my local John Lewis until they drop their 2nd generation 500GB price
3. splash out for the 1TB with the student discount

It took "forever" for the dual band AEBS to show up, which is now $149. The previous generation AEBS is $135. They're not going to drop the TC below that. They'll probably drop the 1TB to ~250; dunno when they'll intro the dual-band version to the refurb store. As for the 500GB, it'll have to stay at a price point above the AEBS, maybe $179?

updated prices on the refurbs:
$249 for 1TB
$189 for 500GB
neither is dual band.

someday dual band TCs will come.

Does any know how can i get a Time Capsule without HD in it ?

time capsule without a hard drive is an airport extreme. or heck any wifi router.

Obviously, they have the 1TB versions already but will the price reductions have been applied, even if they don't physically have the 2TB?

the price change is independent of stock counts. so yes the 1TB should be lower price already

Also, what do they do with all the 500GB versions they have laying around? I've never seen a 'sale' in an apple store so do they send them back to HQ?

for what I have experienced, it seems with all 'outdated' items (non software) they lower the price but keep any stock in stores for a little while, say maybe a couple of weeks, and then ship them back to the warehouses where they are sold clearance online.

I don't see the point in updating every day, or do I really care to do it wirelessly.
have your computer crash and you might see the point. as for the wireless, it works for some, not for others. I never bothered with wireless backups on my imacs cause I don't move them around. when my roommates came in with two laptops we decided to replace my old airport with a time capsule so they could do backups without being stuck carrying around a harddrive. we haven't had any speed issues after each one did the first backup. one of the boys did have a crash so it proved to be handy cause he's a grad student and was in the middle of his thesis

Apples and oranges, ladies and gentlemen. When talking about the price of the 2TB Time Capsule and comparing it to other brands out there, makes sure you´re talking about the same thing. If Apple still are using Hitachi drives, they are faster than the current ones offered by WD and Seagate:

The HD32000IDK7 is a 2TB 3.5-inch SATA Deskstar drive spinning at 7200rpm and priced at $269.99. It's not yet available, but is said to be coming soon. The current maximum Deskstar capacity is 1TB.

Western Digital's 2TB Caviar Green desktop drive has four platters and spins at 5400rpm. WD also has a 2TB enterprise RE4-GP (Green Power) drive. Seagate has a 2TB Barracuda LP drive which rotates at 5900rpm.

Western Digital apears to have a 7200rpm 2TB Caviar Black coming, with Hexus guessing at a price around $300. A 7200rpm 2TB Deskstar would give Hitachi GST an access time edge, and it will be interesting to see if the power consumption is in the same area as the 5200 and 5400rpm 2TB drives from Seagate and Western Digital.

According to supplier datasheets, the Barracuda LP draws 5.5 watts when idle and 6.8 watts when operating, the 2TB Caviar Green draws 6 watts in operating mode and 3.7 watts when idle, and WD's enterprise 2TB RE4-GP drive needs 6.8 watts when operating and 3.7 watts in idle mode.

The HGST 2TB drive looks to have a price and access time advantage over the WD drives. If it has the same power draw characteristics then it could be a formidable competitor.

I got a call from John Lewis this morning; they've reduced the price of the 500GB 2nd generation Time Capsules to £189.

I'm not at my university so can't check myself, but does the education discount stretch to refurbished products too?

They could definitely make the TC slimmer (same size as a macbookpro) using 2.5" drives (2 500gb for 1tb raid, or 2 1tb 2.5" in raid for 2tb) but id imagine the prices would be even higher. :D its cool though
Yep,
there definetely is difference between a backup and a reliable backup.
They could also make fat-TC with 2 3.5" drives in it.
But I think that they don't want to signal to customers that their backup product has a weak link (hdd) that can crash at any second and take all the data with it...
Making 2-disk backup product would make current product look faulty and Apple just don't have faulty products...
Redundancy and backup are different things, but they get really powerful when combined.

1TB version on US store: $299.00
That equals £181.33 at today's rates. Add VAT of 15% and you're at £208.53
Add :apple: tax, and I'd expect it to retail in the UK for £219.99.
But guess what!
The 1Tb version on the UK store is £379.00
WHAT THE HELL?
That's a 172% markup!?!!!
No wonder that Apple is not so popular here in Europe...

I wish Amazon would hurry up and update their price for the 1TB version. It is still at $457 :(

I'm watching Amazon and Best Buy for price drops on the 500gb. That's enough for one TC.

^ agreed. I have had people who don't read the box pull a  when they think it's just a router. Show them what it really is and they change their tune very quickly. Airport Extreme $180 + 1TB (~$100) = 1TB Time Capsule  Building one yourself with Netgear or Linksys and you won't get the same results. Close, but not the same.

After returning my 1 TB to Best Buy on Thursday, I called the Apple Store yesterday to see if they had a 2 TB. They said no, but I went by later for another reason and saw one sitting on the shelf. So now I have my new 2 TB TC. I restored my TM backup sparsebundles (I archived from my previous 1 TB TC before returning it), and was able to pickup where I left off for our two MBPs.

Way to expensive, even if it is an Apple product.... Would love to see an iTunes server to back up my 500+ GB of mp3's.....

Well they could make it cheaper, but that would mean using slower harddrives like WD Green Caviar or Seagate. Those two are also not classified as "server grade".

Right now the Hitachi drive that Apple uses are the only 2 TB available at 7200 rpm and "server grade"-classification.

Great news on the 1tb and 2tb-drives front, especially that they're the server-grade Hitachi ones. Can I just ask, will they blend at all?

Time Capsule BUGS

Since I set up 2 different TC in two different locations with WAP
I have this issue where other people cannot join the network. They can see it but it will not let them join. Updated all firmware etc. and nothing.
One strange thing, I was unable to re-set the units.
Any Ideas?
