Apple Upgrading iTunes Disney Movie Purchases to 4K HDR

I just checked my individual release of each extended and mine wasn’t upgraded. I bought from iTunes originally. Maybe I bought the SD version and didn’t realize it.

Hoping the same thing happens with the Lord of the Rings 4K remaster.

Do you mean extended cut? I hope so too, but I didn't think it had a 4k version. At least not yet.

I‘ve read about Disney content being upgraded to 4k since last week already but none of my Disney movies got the treatment yet in germany.

Can I watch these in HDR on my iPhone 11 Pro? How about the 9.7” iPad Pro? 16” MacBook? I travel and don’t have a 4K TV, but I’d love the benefit of HDR on my mobile devices.

It’s HDR and Dolby Atmos, not HDR and 4K.

Nice gesture. Anybody wish they would apply your rental fee to the subsequent purchase if you should choose to purchase after renting??

They really ought to do this. There are several movies I can't decide whether to rent or buy — and as a result I haven't done either.

Pretty sure the TV app on macOS does not support 4k playback. At least it doesn‘t on Catalina.

Sad that movies ported over from MA don’t get upgraded, though.

Mine did, but it maybe because I always made sure I got the 4k versions in MA when buying codes

They only Disney film showing in the 4K HDR in the UK is Mulan, so I guess it’s coming eventually. 🤔

i bought The Fifth Element and Heat on iTunes (HD). Neither were upgraded to 4K, yet you can buy the 4K versions on iTunes.

it depends on the studio. Quite a few upgrade the movies (I think Apple makes a deal for that and pays them for the upgrade). But not all, yet. With powerhouse Disney upgrading the whole catalogue, it is likely others will follow suit. WB has been very cool in this aspect since the beginning.

this certainly makes me a happy camper.

Used Disney Anywhere to get digital copies of my 4K Blu-Rays and they’re still all in HD. Avengers End Game, which I bought in 4K on VUDU is also still 1080P SDR.

It really sucks that things like this are always country and region specific.

Im in the UK. Why dont we get the same. I have all the Marvel movies and Star wars ones... and the only Marvel ones in 4K are Spider-man as Sony owns them.

Theres no reason why a high profile gesture like this cannot be applied simultaneously worldwide... why on earth not??

BTW -- It's not 4K to download -- only 4K to watch on AppleTV (at least for some titles).

In Sweden it’s all HD too. I guess that it will roll out here too eventually, but it’ll probably take a year or two before we get 4k.

As others have said nothing in the UK yet, although a quote from The Verge article states "Other countries will get access to the 4K versions from Apple by the end of this year." so maybe a month or two.

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are scheduled for 4K release on December 1st.

It seems to be just for Disney Studios' movies.
Back to the Future Trilogy and all my other Disney purchases were upgraded to 4K.
