I've always wish that Disney and Apple would join forces in a streaming service. I can still see them merge Apple+ and Disney+ in the future.

I tried to hide the movies in question then repurchase them now that they are available in 4K and it wouldn't let me. They just reverted to the HD even though they should 4K for sale.

Guess we just have to wait.

If you already purchased from iTunes in HD it should eventually upgrade on its own. In situations where you might have bought a SD or HD version or obtained a code for same when higher resolutions were available, hiding your purchase wouldn’t work, you’d have to get rid of the purchase by gifting it to someone else. After that, you can repurchase from iTunes in whatever resolution you want.

How can they put out Lion King in 4K? I am pretty sure it was not shot in 4K.

Also makes you feel sorry for people paying extra to get the 4K bluray, meanwhile those who paid for a 1080P digital version get free 4K. Also, I wonder if someone will complain that he does not want the 4K version and wants the 1080P one. Maybe their device does not play 4k?

....thanks? I think that’s exactly what I just pointed out...

The really exciting thing for me was the addition of Dolby Atmos and the accompanying support of spatial audio for AirPods Pro. I had the HD versions of the "Star Wars" films downloaded on my iPad and streamed the updated versions (which have the 20th Century Fox intro restored to the prequel and original trilogies, BTW) from my iPhone, and the difference in audio quality is mind-blowing.

You mentioned trying to hide a purchase, not getting rid of it by gifting... unless that's what you meant to say? Hidden purchases are still owned by you and can be unhidden whenever you want. Gift a purchase to someone else and it's gone for good.

How do you gift a movie away? Only option I see is to be charged when sending a gift to someone.

Sorry, my mistake in looking at this more closely, it's not something I've had to do in a long time. What I actually should have said is that the only way I know of to get around already having a lower resolution version of a movie in iTunes, that is not upgradable for whatever reason, is to gift it. Not to someone else, however, but to yourself.

Find the movie in question in iTunes, hit 'share,' and then 'gift,' and then gift it to yourself using the same email address that you use for iTunes. This will effectively allow you to repurchase the movie and get the 4K version. But, yes, you will be charged for the purchase. Sorry for the confusion!

If you purchased your HD Disney movies directly through iTunes, there is really no need to do anything, they will eventually be converted to 4K.

I've been through the cycle of resolution upgrades since the beginning, so I'm glad this is FINALLY beginning to happen.

I've bought Star Wars and Lord of the Rings in VHS, DVD, Blu Ray, and Blu Ray Extended. Same with most major franchises like the Matrix, Harry Potter, Disney movies (I have 4 children) etc. to varying degrees over the years.

I don't have a 4K TV yet (didn't see the point), but now that the PS5 is coming out and it has 4K playback this Christmas is going to be REALLY expensive. :)

Hmm, sounds like a pricey experiment. I talked to both Apple and Movies Anywhere and they said the same thing. Movies I have added to iTunes via codes from Movies Anywhere aren't eligible for 4K upgrade nor can Apple just delete the movies from my account so I can repurchase them.

Seems like a catch 22. I may give your idea a shot and see what happens. At worst I'll be out 20 bucks...

Correct. And hiding a movie, what you originally tired to do, won't do the trick.

Gifting will work. I've done it before with Movies Anywhere titles. But, yeah, it ain't free. You're paying whatever iTunes' current full price happens to be.

Ok I’ll give it a shot but if it doesn’t work I’m sending you the bill....

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. The 4K upgrade is eligible for Disney movies that are linked to outside sources (like Movies Anywhere). If you are on an iPhone or iPad, open the Apple TV app, in the upper right corner of the "Watch Now" tab, select your profile, sign out and then sign back in. This fixed the issue for me. These steps should work on the Apple TV 4K as well if you aren't seeing the 4K upgrade.

None of my Star Wars movies show up as 4K hdr on the Apple TV app on my iPhone XS or iPad Pro. On my Apple TV they all show as 4K hdr. The back to the future trilogy was recently upgraded to 4K hdr. On my iPhone XS and iPad Pro the first and second show up as 4K hdr but not the third. All are 4K on the Apple TV. So all in all it’s basically confusing especially after getting the email which makes no limitations about the Apple TV app on the iPhone and iPad Pro. I’m sure they will get it all figured out one of these days...

On Mac? I’m currently on phone with them and they are telling me the opposite.

The entire movie catalog has been removed from Mexico's iTunes store. Searching for Disney gives zero results now...

OK so signing out and back in did not do the trick. What did work was gifting them to myself like was suggested above. I did that on the phone with Apple and sure enough they switched over. I'm out 21.19 per movie but that's the price of doing business.

They did give me two dozen free rentals so hey...that's something.

Thanks for the suggestion! Not exactly elegant but it got the job done.

You mean the original animated one? Either way, if it wasn't shot in 4K, then upscaling (I'm massively simplifying it, if you want to understand more, you can google it).

Also, I wonder if someone will complain that he does not want the 4K version and wants the 1080P one. Maybe their device does not play 4k?

It will stream the best quality the device can handle. So, if it's available in 4K, but the device you are streaming to can only support up to 1080p, then you get it in 1080p.

Most of my purchases were digital codes redeemed in iTunes or movies anywhere when I purchased a Blu-ray or DVD. So far none of them are showing up as 4K but the audio has been upgraded on almost all of them.

I had to sign out and back in of my Apple TV app on my iPhone and then some upgraded when they reloaded

Which version, 2019 or 1994? Looks like both used a 2K digital intermediate:

For the 2019, according to Widescreen Review:

"... photographed digitally using Arri Alexa Mini and Arri Alexa IMAX camera systems at 6.5K and sourced from a 2K (not 4K) master Digital Intermediate format. As the 2K Digital Intermediate has been upconverted to 2160p, there is no real gain in native resolution."
