i bought The Fifth Element and Heat on iTunes (HD). Neither were upgraded to 4K, yet you can buy the 4K versions on iTunes.
There are a couple of exceptions to the free 4K upgrades. For some movies, studios have opted to make an entirely new listing for the 4K version rather than upgrading the existing version to 4K. Heat is definitely one example (the original HD theatrical cut is no longer for sale and was not upgraded to 4K - they replaced it with the director's cut that is 4K - If you own the theatrical cut and want the 4K director's cut, you have to buy it separately). Not sure about The Fifth Element.

If you are also linked to a Movies Anywhere account, that might also be causing problems. Movies imported into iTunes via Movies Anywhere that were originally purchased in HD at another provider do NOT get free 4K upgrades on iTunes. The movie has to have been originally purchased on iTunes.

Which version, 2019 or 1994? Looks like both used a 2K digital intermediate:

For the 2019, according to Widescreen Review:

photographed digitally using Arri Alexa Mini and Arri Alexa IMAX camera systems at 6.5K and sourced from a 2K (not 4K) master Digital Intermediate format. As the 2K Digital Intermediate has been upconverted to 2160p, there is no real gain in native resolution.

well, obviously the 1994 one. I don't think they shot on 4K. Even if it was on film, I don't think there is more picture to be extracted from those drawings.

The additional resolution of 4K is not what’s providing the improvement. It’s the improved compression and color performance.

Reading this thread with interest! I'm in the UK and am wondering if I purchase "Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga" via Apple TV, which is currently showing HD quality, will this be upgraded to 4K? (there's no 4K versions available as far as I can see on Apple TV/iTunes here in the UK). Thanks :)

Hi - Like me, I have got that in my library. Rumour is that it will be upgraded by the New Year - I think it has in the US - although Apple/Disney have not explicitly stated that. Let's hope so.

That's great, thanks for letting us know. Just been into my library, signed out and back in, and they're there in glorious 4K :)
