:D these scalpers will learn a lesson or two really soon. The hard way. Absolutely no one's gonna buy these for $8k.
Yeah I think the scalpers might be making a mistake here. Unlike regular wearable like the Apple Watch, the Vision Pro is a pretty niche product at the moment.

I'm not so sure the appeal is so strong that people are willing to pay 2x the price for an already insanely expensive product.

You'd be surprised, especially considering the Vision Pro is only available in the US at the moment. Only takes a few oversees customers with money to burn. When the new iPhones come out, the stores see scalpers buying to sell overseas for weeks--and that's simply because the iPhone prices are notably more expensive in many countries. This product isn't even available to them yet.

I figured this would happen quickly. Sounds like easily 100,000+ sold within less than an hour.
I'm a huge fan of the product, but haters will say that we don't know at all if it was 100,000.

It's just the fanboys - of which I am one (1TB Vision Pro ordered immediately). The Apple cult is still quite strong so the initial sell-out I think is expected - the long lasting success of the product will take a bit longer to determine.

TBH for casual buyers, I'd really recommend waiting at least for the 2nd iteration as Apple will need time to iron out the kinks. The software ecosystem also needs time to really mature.

Early Apple adopters like me are really just guinea pigs (to be clear, I'm totally happy being one).

I think it depends on the Light Seal size.

After I purchased mine (face scanned that matches me a 35W Light Seal), I tried to go through the pre-ordering process again several times just for the curiosity of how the delivery date slips, but then I found that the Light Seal size is not always the same. Sometimes I get 25W (I think that’s when my face is closer), sometimes 33W, and once a 35N or something like that.

In my zip code, I found that the 33W one is already slipped to mid March delivery (and not available in my closest Apple Store), but the 35W one still delivers in early February (and available in my nearest store).

It isn't really a "mistake" since, worst-case, they can just return it to Apple for a full refund.

wonder if it "sells out" or just keeps pushing dates back.
Both. Apple makes a certain number for pre-sale opening day. If Kuo is to be believed, Apple made 80,000 of them for Feb 2 delivery or pickup. They plan to make about 450,000 or so for the entire year according to some reports. The initial order did sell out, which means they won’t have any more in their warehouses until they make more. The dates being pushed back are based on future production. Likely they get some in inventory every day. With some shipping dates going into March now, that means Apple is selling product they won’t get in stock for weeks.

Just because they are out of inventory doesn’t mean they stop taking orders. iPhone deliveries slipping means the same thing. Their initial inventory was sold and any slipping orders are based on future production.

Feels like scalping a mac pro...just not a good investment.

Well that will be a big problem then... hopefully they are holding back some light seal inventory. Otherwise, you use the scan to order, it's not the right size to work properly, and then you are stuck with a $3500 product you can't use for months...

Yeah that's a good point actually. For it to actually have an effect they'll probably need to limit returns e.g. if you order more than 1 within a 24 hour time window you can only return one of them.

Probably not something that can be done on iPhones (I think it's common for people to buy for the whole family) but for a new category product like the Vision Pro that is not an unreasonable policy I think.

I had the same problem...it was due to your selected time window being grabbed and processed by someone else before your transaction was completed. I started with early day windows on Feb 2 but they quickly went, ended up with 2 pm on Feb 2.
Same here. Picked 11am on Feb 2 but it was taken already when I was trying to pay. That was 5:04 am PT. To save the precious time, I tell myself to not risk it to pick a time that is close than that (which may also be taken). So I picked 3 pm, and it goes through (also at the same minute, 5:04). A heart-beating moment!

You’d be surprised. I’ll be most of them selling for twice the price are being sold overseas to countries that aren’t even mentioned yet for future sales.

When the dust settles and reality kicks in, I really hope Apple will even offer discounts, so that these clowns will even make a loss with this :D

Did you miss the whole PS5 scalping period... for about 15+ months? I'm doubting good numbers of "absolutely no one" resisted being scalped... as will be the case here if it is true that Apple- just like Sony back then- are limited to the amount they can make & release by hard caps on a key part.

The only remedy for this is Apple being able to find a new supply of that part, so they can make as much supply as demanded. That undermines the whole scalping opportunity. Else, the scarcity is the key variable in making any scalper play work... and that scarcity is heavily rumored to be a thing for at least the rest of 2024.

Did anybody else in California only see an option for February 8 delivery no matter what? Right as the app opened too. It’s not a big deal just wondering, I never saw any other option than that.

hoping that it’ll bump up to preparing to ship with the first batch, fingers crossed
I was able to select pick up at the store on February 2

Only if the profit play fails (which requires Apple to prove the "scarcity" rumor wrong by being able to make far more units to feed whatever demand exists in the U.S. AND the rest of the world too)... and they can't then liquidate at "cost"... and they don't opt to then just open it and keep it for themselves.

On the flip side, if that last option is their ultimate fall back, they could attempt a quick flip in the next month or two, take most of the profit in the scalp to then subsidize one they then buy for themselves (or maybe a refurb when some inevitably show up there)... or to put towards the Apple (or other) stuff they might want.

I detest what they are doing myself but it is basically classic entrepreneur thinking to find something in short supply desired by others and mark it up for a quick profit.

I think the PS5 shortage during Covid is a close analogue. What ultimately resolved the scalping there is Sony being able to make many more units to overcome that long period of scarcity. That's what it will take here too. Hopefully, the key part rumor was only a rumor and that Apple is able to bring more manufacturers online quickly if demand warrants it. I hope so.

I woke up just now so mid March. But I'll be out of the country March through May, so won't be pre ordering. When I get home I'll see how things are going. Hopefully some really good apps have been developed by then.

I was able to get 512gn delivered feb 2. at 6:15 AM PST. So 512 model had not slipped dates by that time. Will be interested to see if all models sell out for feb 2, or only the 256...
