I fully appreciate your pessimism about this product. It all reads like it is not for you. Other people may feel differently. There's over 8 Billion other people on the planet. It doesn't take but a tiny slice of them to buy every one that Apple makes in 2024, including every one that is scalped on Ebay. Maybe they sell out? Maybe they don't? We find out in time. Our guesses- positive or negative- mean almost nothing in getting to the the answer to such questions.
I do think it will take off, just not quite yet, and probably not for the next 3-4 iterations (until a lighter, smaller and cheaper model arrives). Do appreciate good discussion and think you do bring good points. And people paying 60K for an iPhone 2G are what I mean when I say "people with more money than sense" :). I know that money is in the eye of the beholder, but 3,500 for an entertainment device that can only be used by one person at a time seems like quite a stretch. Even households that could comfortably afford it would be questioning if they should.

Yes I think this is when mass market appeal will set in. The Apple Watch began in more or less the same way - good money is actually waiting on the 2nd or even 3rd iteration so that the ecosystem can grow and Apple can iterate on the design.

I bought it anyway - I'm a massive Apple fanboy so I'm committed to it, but agree the market is not that large for now - only enthusiasts (me) and people with deep pockets.

Look up the full Peloton proposition… minimal entertainment, one person at a time in a household, resulting in the user feeling exhausted, being sweaty and prob stinky. No entertainment apps, no productivity apps, just scenery tours in sync with trainers pressing user to basically make themselves stinky up to every day.

They’ve sold millions of THAT tech product. Depending on the rumor, Apple is trying for somewhere between 80K and 300K to maybe 400K units in an entire year.

Again, it’s all relative. Lots of “not rich” households have a pricey Peloton bike and a hefty monthly subscription to use it each month.

I had to do a double take at your criticism of a connected exercise bike resulting in the user feeling... exhausted. Yeah, it's a piece of exercise equipment. Did Peloton mess up somehow but not creating an exercise experience in which the user comes away feeling rested?

There are entertainment apps. Productivity apps? IT'S AN EXERCISE BIKE.

That’s about as far off the intended point as possible. I’ll assume I communicated it poorly… or you jumped in late and missed the earlier conversation about how different people value things and how not rich people can find Peloton or Vpro money if they want either or both enough.

No criticism intended at all- it was a tangible example about something average Joes do pay a LOT for that only one person uses at a time. For anyone who has one and likes it, that was not putting down that product… just showing that MILLIONS of people will pay lofty prices for select things vs. Apple trying to sell somewhere between only 80K and up to possibly 400K of Vpro units (if suppliers are able to give them key parts in that kind of volume) over the next 12 months or so.

I actively cycle almost every day with a goal of tiring myself out, sweating it out and likely ending up with an aroma that would not win any "new cologne of 2024" contests. 😉

So ride Peloton ride! And view Vision Pro view!

Wouldn't it have said Solo Knit Band - L, Dual Loop Band - L if it was really large? 🤣
I believe the sizes are S, M and N… W sounds like 25W must be the size of the light seal, the width of the Vision Pro itself because I saw S and M on the headbands in the promo videos

Either way, for my size it’s still available for launch date except the 256GB which is slated for 2 weeks later

Got 3. 2 to sell and 1 to keep, hopefully paid for by the profits from the first 2.

Worst case they get returned and I get to play around with one at home for a few weeks before sending them back. Zero risk.
Umm... There are nearly 1,000 listings on eBay now, but only 7 completed/sold listings at the time of this writing. 7! People aren't that desperate for one, especially when shipping times didn't slip by much. Looks like you might be returning them...or better yet, cancel the orders and save yourself the hassle.

Do you really think there's a huge market for scalping these? Sure a few anxious enthusiasts with more money than sense might fall for it, but nowhere close the PS5. I doubt there's a huge market even at 3.5K, anything beyond that is insane.

Sony has failed to make a compelling case for its $500 VR device, which is backed up by the console gaming leader. I just don't see how this will take off, at least in its current state with its current capabilities.
No. $3,500 is a lot of money. This is like Apple Watch series 0. Apple wants to figure out what works and what doesn’t

Why would many pay for "buy it now" when they know seller will not be able to ship it until at least FEB 2? Even the international buyers who want one and Apple will not yet sell to them will know that there is no possible shipment until FEB 2.

And why would any domestic buyers opt for Ebay when Apple purchases will be at retail instead of scalped higher pricing? While it's still possible to get it not too much later than FEB 2 from Apple, why would anyone in America buy from Ebay today?

What makes the Ebay play work is Apple running out of stock, Apple ship dates getting insanely long (aka MONTHS) and the international crowd who can't wait for Apple to bring it to them.

I'd be surprised at 7 "completed listings" on pre-launch day 1 except for the international buyers scenario. Apparently 7 had the itchiest "buy now" fingers of all to place an order they know won't ship until FEB 2 or beyond.

What will be much more interesting is checking this about 10-15 days beyond FEB 2, when buyers can buy on Ebay with more confidence that scalper can probably ship it immediately... and even more so if shipping dates during this pre-order process slide way out so that domestic buyers face a LONG wait for delivery from Apple.

Anyone interested in PS5 saw this exact thing play out for about 15+ months during covid. Sony could not supply many new units, scalpers basically locked up available supply and jacked up the pricing and if anyone wanted a PS5, they paid the added premium or had to get very, very lucky with the few new ones that Sony could occassionally get to stores. But while Sony was able to fulfill earlier stock, there was no need to overpay the scalpers on Ebay.

Was expecting this to happen quickly due to the limited units available for launch day.

Pro tip: Most stock has dates slipped to march... BUT if you really want Vision Pro on Feb 2nd, add ZEISS readers to your order $99 more. 512GB and 1TB available for 2/2 delivery. Looks like they've allocated stock separately for Zeiss orders, as the same config without lenses is not available until march.

If you buy with readers, do you also get the standard non-prescription lenses with the unit?

Edit: It appears so, yes. The readers are a separate item that can ship at a different date.

Did they miscount their stock or did people already cancel orders after they slept on it? I’m asking because I just went into the store and the ship date is February 19-26.

Again, I don't know. In the early 2000s, I was certainly not rich and probably wouldn't be considered "a certain market" but laid out this much money for a Powerbook G4 with 2 hours of battery life... and also purchased extra batteries to buy more time than 2 hours. There was ABUNDANT established alternative laptops at the time that cost MUCH less than that... but I wanted THAT one bad enough to come up with the money, buy it and enjoy it. I certainly could have been an oddball, relatively poor guy who put it all on this one, "out of proportion" purchase... but then when out and about, I noticed many others who didn't exactly look elite, flying with me in Coach, using the same Powerbook G4s.

There are smart phones priced down towards about $100 these days. They text & function as phone and browse the web, run apps, etc just as readily as iPhone... but I see people of apparently limited means with iPhones everywhere... and many with top tier iPhones than older or bottom end models. I recently saw an apparently homeless guy begging for money on the streets talking to someone on his iPhone (3 cameras on the back of it).

If the average consumer wants to splurge, they will splurge. I've seen people driving Cadillacs in the line for free Gov cheese. I've seen obviously not rich people carting gigantic screen TVs I know cost far more than cheap gigantos out of Best Buy. I've sold very high-priced products to people who seemed were reaching far beyond what made sense for their situation, income, etc. I see minimum wage workers with the fancy nails, lashes, etc that require a fairly sizable amount of spend to maintain.

So again, we'll see what the average Joes do. Maybe none will buy at all? Or maybe many will covet yet another product that seems to be "for the rich" but not priced so high that they can't possibly get one if even the low-income guy tried. This is not multi-million dollar homes or yachts. It's basically mid-priced MBpro pricing. It's only $1500 more than an ASD with stand option. iPhone PRO MAX fold will probably be at this price within the next 10 years... and I suspect people will be falling all over themselves to buy it at that price in 2034 or so.
Government cheese!? When or where in last 30 years has there been Gov’t Cheese!!??

Yeah I think the scalpers might be making a mistake here. Unlike regular wearable like the Apple Watch, the Vision Pro is a pretty niche product at the moment.

I'm not so sure the appeal is so strong that people are willing to pay 2x the price for an already insanely expensive product.
They can simply return them if they don't sell which makes it way too easy for them to do this. If they have a credit card they don't even need the cash on hand. They can pay the card off or return before the grace period. Kinda clever, actually.

Didn’t the polish cloth dates slip back to a month or two?

I refuse to be surprised by anything since then.
