More USB-C cables - more opportunities to sell chargers as an accessory.
It's almost as if it was designed to nudge people into buying their charger.

"Congratulations on the choice of your new iPhone. You know we're not including the power adapter anymore, for environmental reasons. Of course we're still including a cable. Can be used with any standard USC-C charger. Cause it's the new standard that will be everywhere, eventually. So... do you already have a USB-C power adapter? No..? Would you like me to get one for you from the shelf? It's only $19."

The cable is so thin and lightweight that nobody will get concerned about the environment (plus, it's the same worldwide, so no localisation costs).

I bought a new charger PLUS a longer better cable.
I threw the old cable in the harbour to save the climate from CO2, when they burn the trash here in in my country. Now THAT's good Apple spirit :)

Is the iphone 12 the peak? Are we going to see the inevitable 'regression to the mean' in the coming years?

I no longer get excited for new product launches, don't have a burning desire to own the new tech immediately. Maybe I am just getting old and grumpy.

Maybe it's time to switch brands, helping to put a little spring in your step?

I will have to admit, I cannot stand listening to people such as this lady.
She is paid a LOT of money to promote the products of the company.
I'm not going to say she is deliberately lying about anything, she is just very skilled in focusing, saying and putting a positive spin on every aspect of the product she is being paid to say nice things about.

Basically a used car salesman, saying onto the good points.
When you really want to speak to the mechanic out the back who will tell you everything accurately.

Nice lady I'm sure, but it's almost not worth listening to anything she says.

That said, I know this is the job of these people, so nothing against her whatsoever.

Your innuendo says otherwise.

Most of the Android shipped in the past few years uses USB-C for their Charger. That is Nearly 3B devices in the past 3 years.
Not quite.
Let's look at the global top selling Android phones in 2020.
- Samsung Galaxy A51: it comes with USB-A charger
- Redmi Note 8/8 Pro: Also USB-A charger
- Redmi 8/8A: you guessed it, USB-A

The ones coming with USB-C on the charger side are pretty much just the flagships/ultra flagships, and those actually are not selling that many.

This is basically Apple indirectly admitting that they are only interested in existing iPhone owners and premium flagship Android owners, as their target market. Quite disheartening personally, as it means Apple probably won't be bothered too much in making their devices more accessible (already seen with the increased prices of the iPhone 12 and iPad Air). Makes me think that the iPhone SE will be just an anomaly every couple of years.

Many people have a USB-A charger and a USB-A lightning cable and put that USB-C lightning cable straight back in the box. And charge happily with their USB-A charger, at least for some time.

Many people have a USB-C charger and no USB-A lightning cable and they can plug the phone into their UBS-C charger.

Many people will get a USB-C charger at some point in the future (buying a new Mac, living with a person buying an Android phone with USB-C charger) and will use it without having to buy a new charger.

What they did was a 100% rational decision. There is no need to think anything underhanded is going on.

I’ve never understood the complaints about including the USB C cable in the box. I’d much rather a new USB C cable than an old USB A cable, everyone has USB A cables.

I swear if they included USB A in the box the same people would be complaining it isn’t USB C.

They could include both, especially since they cheaped out and left out the power brick and headphones.

Even better, they could include USB-C - USB-C and USB-A - USB-C cables in the box. You know, because they dropped the idiotic Lightning connector from the phone like they should have done half a decade ago.

At some point the EU needs to go ahead and ban Lightning connectors, maybe then we'll get rid of the stupid things.

I’d rather have better scratch resistance then drop. Started having the screen scratch easily with iPhone 7 and on. Seems the displays before or perhaps smaller iPhones didn’t have that issue. Next year the big feature will be always on 5G.

It did feel a bit staged didn’t it? But I did learn two things. The first is that apple are right not to include a charger. Anyone who has ever owned almost any iphone will be able to use their old charger on this one and those who don’t may well have a usb c charger somewhere. I hadn’t thought of it like that before but what she said convinced me. The second is that the back of the phone is not as strong as the front of it. Why is that? I’d have thought that it would be easier to strengthen that part of the phone which didn’t have to be see-through.

All in all, therefore, I’d say it was a useful interview.

True, nothing against her but she talks like if she had been tortured with electroshock 5 minutes before the interview. Or as if she was robots. I find the interview a little uncomfortable to watch. Feels more like propaganda from an authoritarian state than something genuine. I felt the same watching the presentation video of the new Microsoft Surface Laptop Go. Cold, creepy. That's tech today, I guess, no matter which company.

I wouldn’t put it that way at all. This isn’t the first controversial change to the iPhone charge cable, and it won’t be the last. USB-A lightning cables are so ubiquitous, they can be bought in the impulse buy section of almost every store very cheap.

The rhetoric that bothers me is after years of complaints of “the dongle book pro” suddenly everyone already has USB-C but only in the form of integrated chargers.

You know, because they dropped the idiotic Lightning connector from the phone like they should have done half a decade ago.
The hysteria over not including a power adapter now, would be magnified if they removed lightning. “Change for the sake of change” is what most critics said about lightning in 2012. And the EU’s attempts to unify phone charging to micro-USB only resulted in Apple including an adapter.

Journalists who ask about cables not included are brain dead (not a rare condition in journalism).

The phone is cheaper this year (and much higher spec) so if a customer needs to buy a cable they already have savings from the cost of the phone.
The standard (6.1") iPhone 12 is significantly more expensive than how the iPhone 11 was last year (and has no charger or headphones). The Pro is the same price as last year iPhone 11 Pro and it starts from 128GB (but has no charger or headphones).
The iPhone 12 mini has a similar price as the standard (6.1") iPhone 11 last year (but has no charger or headphones).

Wow, Apple is going all out with the PR and marketing this time. I mean when's the last time we have Apple people going into podcasts? Is this part of the contract with Verizon, for Apple to help them market 5G?

The last time was 4 months ago at WWDC, before that was last years iPhone launch, then 2019 WWDC, and the March 2019 iMac event if you go back even further. They’ve been doing this several times a year for YEARS

You must have missed the part where the cable is USB-C and literally NO previous iPhone has included a USB-C power brick.

edit: Perhaps you just meant everyone can use their old power brick AND old cable? If so, that’s where Apple is being self serving. They’re literally including a cable that needs a power brick that they’ve never actually shipped with the device. It just makes no sense. They should have shipped with a usb c power brick at least one year before not including one at all. I’m guessing they likely don’t care since come next year there will be no cable at all. This was just them throwing us a bone in the first place, considering the new MagSafe charger was released this year at the same time.

You’re going to have to be satisfied with being old. I’ve got dibs on grumpy.
