Is the iphone 12 the peak? Are we going to see the inevitable 'regression to the mean' in the coming years?

I no longer get excited for new product launches, don't have a burning desire to own the new tech immediately. Maybe I am just getting old and grumpy.

As long as cameras get better each year, that's all I need. The closer I can get to my $7k DSLR, in terms of quality, the better.

I’ve never understood the complaints about including the USB C cable in the box. I’d much rather a new USB C cable than an old USB A cable, everyone has USB A cables.

I swear if they included USB A in the box the same people would be complaining it isn’t USB C.
I don't see why anyone is whining and worrying about a $20 cable to begin with. lol.

The problem with all the hype about 5G is that it's exactly just that: hype. Look at any 5G coverage map around the world in detail, and you'll find that it's extremely poor at the moment. Buying a 5G phone for 5G internet access right now is a waste of money for 99%+ of users. I say it will take about another 2 years before most of us, even in large cities and capitals can say that 5G coverage is decent enough to warrant a 5G phone. At this point selling the iPhone 12 is like selling a boat in a desert with two swimming pools that are not even connected to each other.

I couldn't agree more. The hype around 5G and the iPhone right now, is off the charts. Take away 5G and what do you have? Same phone as last year, just a different form factor. That's it.

But the iPhone 12 will still be a very good and fast phone 2 years from now, when 5g becomes fast. People will buy it now because it's the latest iPhone and it looks cool. 5g is all hype now, of course (in the US, the rest of the world is different, some places are worse, some better) but it will mature and get better during this phone's life cycle.

If the environment and waste are really concerns, might it have made more sense to not include a cable at all?

She is very obviously in marketing. Too bad we can never get more interviews with lower level engineers. Would be cool to hear about the tradeoffs.

Software can almost never compensate for smaller battery. The people have spoken: battery >>>>>>>> thinness. iPhone 11 PRO lasts all day. Its amazing. That alone made it the best phone I have ever owned. Will wait for testing but feels like a step down To go to smaller batteries and tell us they compensated with softeware.

Why do they pro and 12 have same form factor. Cost savings. Thats it folks. If they put a bigger battery in the 12 then the manufacturing becomes more complex and what they really want is production savings.

Apple is really off the ball with this release.

Normally if there's concern about using too small of a battery or magSafe charging too slowly, you don't want to bring attention to those problems.

I will have to admit, I cannot stand listening to people such as this lady.
She is paid a LOT of money to promote the products of the company.
I'm not going to say she is deliberately lying about anything, she is just very skilled in focusing, saying and putting a positive spin on every aspect of the product she is being paid to say nice things about.

Basically a used car salesman, saying onto the good points.
When you really want to speak to the mechanic out the back who will tell you everything accurately.

Nice lady I'm sure, but it's almost not worth listening to anything she says.

That said, I know this is the job of these people, so nothing against her whatsoever.
I have to admit, that in my opinion, I enjoyed listening to everything that was said. I am clearly not sure what you believe "used car type people" should say? Something along the lines of, "if you drive the car into a wall at high speed, you'll damage the car and potentially hurt yourself?" She was being interviewed and highlighted the product.

The great thing is we all can pick and choose what we want to listen to.

You're right, but then again the X, XS and the 11 will also be great phones for the next 2 years until 5G matures. Also, if we go by your theory that people buy the 12 because it's the newest and looks cool - which is a valid enough theory - those people will also buy the 12S, the 13, etc, which proves my point that buying the 12 was a waste of money. I am not just saying that either, as I am one of those who was ready to pop into the shop on day of launch and move from my XS to the 12 Pro, but seeing the hardly practical "improvements", I decided, I'd much rather not spend money on it. I think my next iPhone will happen when 5G is mature.

Some of these comments rub me the wrong way. Yeah, it seems rehearsed, but that doesn't make it appropriate to be calling the woman creepy or making comments on how she looks.

I'm not necessarily a fan of all the marketing talk either, but interviews can be stressful and uncomfortable, and people handle/approach them in different ways like rehearsing a lot.

But as 5G gets better, battery life will get worse. On top of a 2 year old degraded battery, you should expect battery life to take a drastic fall off of a cliff around the 2 year mark.

iPhone 12/Pro.. battery life is.. not that good
I have the 11 Pro. My work lets me upgrade but wow. This is terrible. The 11 Pro has been the best phone ever and battery life is a huge reason I love the phone. Tragic to take a step back.

Maybe take a few minutes to visit Apple.com and check out the Compare tool because what you posted is a flat out lie.

So how long until the MacBooks and iPads no longer include chargers?

247 weeks

Look at the iPhone SE2. It has an outdated design, mediocre camera, small screen, huge bezels, a HORRIBLE battery life. What's good about it? Just that is has an a13 processor. Which is great, it's an incredibly performant processor. But not a big deal because all mid range phones are super smooth nowadays, so what's the point?
Yet....in all its mediocrity, it sells like hot cakes.

Compared to that, these new iPhones 12 are very capable devices, with good screens, decent battery life and a great design (from 10 years ago, straight from the Jobs era but everything they did after that was worse).
Of course they will sell a lot of phones. Apple does not need to be on the ball anymore. As long as they make minor changes and don't screw up in a major way they will keep selling a crazy number of phones, even if they keep raising prices either directly or by removing accessories and pushing services aggressively.

They just need to keep releasing fast phones with minor camera improvements, that sometimes (like this year) look very pretty and other times are just a little different from the previous model. Inertia and ecosystem lock do the rest. Just raise the temperature slowly and the frog will boil peacefully.

Not everyone has USB-C chargers though? They shouldn't have included any cables in my opinion, since folks will either not use this one [since they will use the numerous USB-A cables & chargers] or go out and buy a new USB-Charger, rendering the initiative [claimed environment] redundant

And a "BUNCH", what kind of professional says we have a BUNCH of...several and here they are 1.x 2.y 3.z.
This is clearly a deliberate communication style. Silicon valley juvenilism.
I don't like it too, it comes to me as fake as plastic fruit and 100% insincere, but every single tech company has adopted it, so what can I say...I guess it works...

Not quite.
Let's look at the global top selling Android phones in 2020.
- Samsung Galaxy A51: it comes with USB-A charger
- Redmi Note 8/8 Pro: Also USB-A charger
- Redmi 8/8A: you guessed it, USB-A

The ones coming with USB-C on the charger side are pretty much just the flagships/ultra flagships, and those actually are not selling that many.

This is basically Apple indirectly admitting that they are only interested in existing iPhone owners and premium flagship Android owners, as their target market. Quite disheartening personally, as it means Apple probably won't be bothered too much in making their devices more accessible (already seen with the increased prices of the iPhone 12 and iPad Air). Makes me think that the iPhone SE will be just an anomaly every couple of years.

I double checked, I stand corrected. They decided to ship USB-A Charger when their phone uses USB-C.....

I have a lot more problem with that than with Apple.

I updated the original post.

It isn't a complaint. It is pointing out the ridiculous hypocrisy of Apple saying "you have enough chargers, use those" while shipping the new phone with a cable that doesn't connect to "those".
Not that hard to understand.

She’s right. I’ve been saying it all along.

If you have a power adapter and you’re an iPhone user, chances are you already have a usb-a lighting cable.

If you’re coming from Android, chances are you have a usb-c charger

And usb-c has a long life ahead. It makes no sense to include usb-a. USB-C is the right choice
Kinda hard to say "it makes no sense to include a USB-A cable" when the entire world is still USB-A, all infrastructure, all vehicles, 90% of the chargers people still have.

It would be nice to snap your fingers and magically change that reality to USB-C, but you can't. Shipping a cable that most people will throw in a drawer and use some older cable is pretty ironic quite frankly. Doesn't really matter that its "the better cable".
