The funniest part of this all that Samsung did copy Apple in the early days. Fast forward today it's Samsung who's got innovative ideas and Apple same old, same old (+ expensive).

This is like comparing the Nissan Skyline to the 911. The 911 is iconic, and has gotten incrementally better over time. It's still the best sports car out there, while others try to out do it in numbers. But driving a 911 leaves no doubt which is the best car out there, same ol' design and everything....

Find it hard to believe that Apple hold so dear a design that is generations old. As if Apple need the money. They do themselves a disservice by squabbling over such an outdated device.

Remember when practically all PC's were Beige Towers? There was no squabbling amongst the companies then. Apple need to grow up and start producing quality Macs again instead of the catwalk fashion fodder currently offered.

It is not illegal to copy ideas. It I only illegal when you copy patented ideas and we have seen many of Apple's patents ruled invalid.

You are mistaken. You cannot patent an idea. One can patent inventions... which is sort of the implementation of an idea.

This statement is completely nonsensical. But very typical of posts here.
The irony of your post is not lost on me. Pray tell, what law is broken by copying an idea? What in @macfacts post do you find nonsensical.

The Supreme Court does not make "recommendations" to the circuit courts of appeals.
They do and they did. Are you unfamiliar with the ruling?

Man, at this point, Apple and Samsung feel like characters who are constantly at each others' throats because of the unaddressed sexual tension between them. Just get it over with and kiss already!

Don't you mean Honda Accord/Civic and Toyota Camry/Corolla or Ford F150 and Dodge Ram? We are talking about commodity electronic devices, not niche market high end electronics.

Can't believe this is still going on ... Samsung released a phone that looked like the iPhone after the iPhone was released. Phones prior to the iPhone looked nothing like it in the marketplace.

Now as memory fades, the judgements become less and less in favor for the one that changed the marketplace. So ridiculous.

Too late. It was true 10 years ago, but not today. It's just a touch screen in a pocket. The technology was ripe for that then, and it's trivially ubiquitous now. It's like putting a keyboard, a trackpad and a display on a laptop.

Would you give up on a chance to win $399 million?! Over someone who stole your ideas?

apple and Samsung spend more than that amount a year in advertising.

heck the Apple commercial in the next Superbowl will probably cost more than what they are asking

Some lawyers needs more money?
This is almost an impossible task. How do you assign a % or dollar amount to round vs square corners on a device (for example).

It's illegal to copy implementations, not ideas. The problem that Samsung had is that it's basically a blatant copy. Look at the phone icon. There are an large number of ways to do a phone icon, so Samsung picked a phone icon with the same green and orientation as Apple did. Of course! Search on google images for "phone handset icon" and see the world of possibilities.

Why have the dock at the bottom? Why not put it on the side? Why aren't the icons the same size as Apple's?

Basically, they took as much of Apple's UI as they could because, you know, research is hard.

Samsung denialists say "no they didn't copy it." You can only say that if you don't know what came before the iPhone.

Maybe (Karl Benz) Mercedes-Benz should now sue every automobile manufacturer that ever created a gas-powered automobile that followed the Velo in 1894? This whole case between Apple and Samsung just seems so silly today as EVERY smartphone manufacturer for the past six years produces a device that is based on the original iPhone in terms basic design and function.

The lawsuit has no base though since both Samsung and Apple evolved from PDAs that were rectangle with rounded corners and icon based OS.
Wuuuuut?

Apple's phone began as a rectangle with rounded corners and an icon based OS (Purple OS in development, iOS in the market).

Samsung "evolved" their antenna-having, keyboard-sporting, stylus-using phones to look just like it. So, if "Samsung evolved" means "Samsung copied," I agree.

Samsung has a rich history of this and has their technique down. Copy, and then delay in the courts with counterattacks and obfuscation until the art becomes mainstream and the mater becomes too embedded to easily manage. If you doubt it, be enlightened by this piece in Vanity Fair from a couple of years ago.

Samsung, the world most corrupted company ever. People buying samsung products are accomplices. Apple shouldn't also use any Samsung parts.

Ugh is it even worth the effort anymore?

Instead of spending all your energy on suing everyone Tim C, why don't you spend your time focusing on developing a truely great product.

When dozens of industry leaders say Apple should get all profits for clear and obvious copying and infringement... the courts should listen. Samsung is being scummy, but what else is new.

I don't understand why they can't forget this and move on. Bring on the iPhone 8 and Galaxy S8 and let consumers duke it out in the marketplace.
I'd like to see you forgo potentially $500 million.

And 9 months later, they gave birth to quadruplets: they named them ApSung, ApSam, PleSung and SamPle.
Unfortunately, due to the design copying, their children turned out looking like the products of inbreeding.
