I find the TV app to be a failure. I would have loved a single place to watch all my content but it turned out to be a strange mix of the iTunes Store (only Movies though in my country)...

I do like the ATV+ content but the half baked TV app is not doing it any favours here. Most people I know dont even know the service exists or think they need the ATV hardware to watch it.
When we first got the Apple TV hardware, it wasn't quite what I expected. I think they intentionally blurred the distinction between Apple TV (hardware) the TV app, and Apple TV+. I don't like that. I prefer to think in terms of "Apple TV" only, and I definitely prefer to pay only one provider a simple fixed monthly subscription.

After a while I've come to appreciate what the device really does for us. It communicates well with all of our devices and appliances throughout our home, and we're not even what I'd consider a modern "smart home", but it's become a hub of sorts anyway. Voice control, short cuts, automation, controlling of other devices, I don't know all the details for how all that magic works, but it does and does it really really well.

Anyhow, it took a little while for us to discover various apps. For example, for well over a decade we've built a personal media library of iTunes purchases, shows, movies, and music, and thousands upon thousands of family videos. Media of our entire lives archived on a NAS, birthday parties, our children growing up, grandparents, vacations, etc. All of that stuff is a click or even a voice command away, and just wonderful. I've built HTPCs before, tried a variety of technologies, and never came close to such a seamless simple interface.

Where things turn sour for me is through the alternate streaming "apps" that aren't really apps in my opinion. They're just advertisement banners and icons for launching 3rd party services. I never realized that in other countries these launchers might not work. I can imagine that is very frustrating. However, they all work here. The problem is I'm not willing to pay for access to quite often just one more show or movie, which is exclusively behind yet another subscription. Plus, we'd likely end up paying many many times over and over for just that one show and might forget. Just a waste of money. I just want one quality provider and I think Apple is on track, planning, to deliver. If I'm right, and they do, I can't imagine why people would want the hassle and the bills of anything more. I added it up one evening. Many of these alternate streaming apps had one to two highly rated, quality shows. Those were their only hooks. When I summed it all up, a person would be paying well over $200 per month. Ridiculous.

Plus, I don't have time to really dig through a variety of platforms or apps to hopefully find something of quality. I'd rather have access to my decades of personally curated content and a trusted source like Apple focusing on producing and delivering quality content.

The one other provider we subscribe to is about to lose us. I've become very disenchanted by Netflix's obvious transition to quantity over quality. There'll be a tipping point when Apple is delivering enough quality content that I'll finally just drop Netflix. So, I'm pretty excited about this announcement.

Stupid idea !

They should focus on Live Sports, first at the local level !

E.g., Little League Baseball & Softball !

Tim Cook is either NOT a very smart man, OR simply has NO smart men OR women around him !
How does a company grow into the size of Apple with a market cap of over $2 trillion if it's lead by and has working for it a bunch of dumb people? 🤔

Why would AAPL want to compete Head On with others who are already entrenched in a certain market, & Apple is way behind with little to NO chance to even catch up ?

The ONLY reason I can think of is they want to continue to get the stock price expansion of Netflix without actually having to deliver !

It's called "string them along" ... OR more precisely, Smoke & Mirrors & a Dog & Pony Show, Tim's specialty :)
I agree. Look what Amazon are doing with NFL Thursday Night Football. In the U.K. they have secured rights to broadcast several English Premier League games throughout the season. It’s the main reason I keep my Prime Video subscription.

I absolutely love Apple TV (the hardware) and how fluidly it integrates with all other Apple's devices. Being able to tell Siri to turn on all of our equipment, play songs, movies, shows and more, is awesome and convenient. Even their software, interfacing and searching for content is light years ahead of other apps and services in it's simplicity and quality.

Where they've fallen short (and it's not even entirely their fault) is they caved to the demands of production companies, and allowed them to pollute Apple TV content with a plethora of crap apps, alternative streaming services. Each one pleading for another $5, $8, even more dollars per month. No one wants that. No one wants to subscribe to yet another platform just so they can find maybe one nugget of a show or movie that's exclusively on that "app", and then be stuck paying throughout the remainder of the year, hoping, waiting, for maybe another quality show to be released. We're bled dry from it, and it's just too much to even try to keep track of, so we just don't even bother.

But, this is how Apple is going to win. Producing and owning truly high quality content. Focusing on quality vs. quantity, and then maintaining a curated, high quality, simple (to use and pay for) platform. Once their library is well populated, people won't even glance at the dozens of other streaming services.
I agree. I enjoyed Tom Hanks' Greyhound and shows like For All Mankind and others. It is still relatively new, so if their focus is building their library, I'm curious as to what and where their platform is headed. If their content becomes too political and focuses too much on social issues, I would lose interest. I get that those are important issues, but when I want to watch shows, I wanna be entertained and enjoy a good show or movie. If I wanted to keep up with social and political issues, I can look to other medium to do that.

Because it was reborn and set on its current trajectory a long time ago by smart people including Steve Jobs and Jonny Ive. The iPhone is a steamroller that nobody can stop or mess up. The only success Tim Cook has had in 10 years is the Watch.

HBO Max's "Harley Quinn" is probably the funniest show I've seen in years. Laugh out loud. And, their "Raised By Wolves" series was probably the best pure Sci-Fi show that I've seen in a good while.
Succession is incredible, as well well that won the grammy for best TV drama last year.
last nite I started watching "perry mason again the first episode had too much info i realized.
i will check out Harley Quinn, my old friend wrote for that character in the 1990s.
HBO is very entettining!

I still dont quite understand why Apple decided to have Apple TV+ making original content and competing directly against Netflix, Disney, Amazon and many others. Other than purely a play to boost Services Revenue with Apple One+.
They were trying to being involved in all aspects of entertainment for their community but in the film/video content provider the competition is intense

  • HBO has its staple of a lot of film content even with the box-office release at the same time available on HBO.
  • Netflix just won the Sony deal with content after release windows and access to Sony Film Vault.
  • Disney in late 2020 thru 2021 has shown it can produce multiple limited series to attract even more subscribers.
  • Amazon offers a lot of original series and movie content on it own.
Apple should have skipped the channel partnership and went starting away to having a lot of older content from some exclusive licensing partnership. It's going to be very tough for Apple TV + to buy a few films and create any similar demand. The only draw is some of these unique series they are producing.

Well, some people might like it. I have a free subscription until september, but I do not see myself continuing after that. I find it boring and I am not a big movie watcher anyway and when I do they are rarely the kind fo family friendly and boring as Apple wants them to be. Apple has to be careful and political correct not to scare anyone away and bit like Disney (Who produced Love, Victor, yet aired it om HULU). I do not see Apple ever making anything like The Mandalorian, Stranger Things or any of the popular crime shows. It also does not help that Sony made a deal with Netflix and all the other studious have made their own streaming services.
Disney+ gets political too… "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" is very political, especially in its latest episode.

AppleMusicTV just launched today. It's a livestream of music videos (like MTV was). Apple also has live radio stations AppleMusic1, AppleMusicHits, and AppleMusicCountry, all curated and hosted by famous DJs. I'd love to see more of this live and curated ethos on the AppleTV+ side. A network cable station. You just put on the channel and watch when you don't want to choose yet another series. I think it would be a brilliant differentiator, when everyone else is doing their best Netflix impression.
We’ve officially come full circle, folks

Thanks. Seriously, I don't know why more people aren't talking about the animated "Harley Quinn" show. It was my daily 30 minute COVID-19 pick me up. There are times I literally busted out laughing. And, they managed to sneak a very good story in there amongst the belly laughs. Enjoy.

A few more British themed shows would be good to see. Britain's top psychic and medium died recently, his name was Derech Acorah. He was loved, revered and worshipped by millions over here. Critics were less kind, but even so, just an idea anyway. Love and light to you all.

They do from HBO side, but the amount of films HBO Max displays in their GUI has eclipsed that. You have WB, DC, TSM, HBO film archives online. Funny enough Tubi has a lot more content of specific genres then HBO Max, such as westerns, martial arts, classics, maybe some other categories. :)

the liberal agenda stuff is gone!
i just launched the tv on safari and there was no Oprah promotions in my face.
is the site working?
anyways
i see spacemen, blue haired chick, something about a cherry and snoopy
there are a couple fighting mosquitoes and Ian McGregor staring at elephant balls!
i should watch the tv more often!

If Tim Cook is such a terrible CEO as you seem to suggest, then Apple would not be doing as well as it is. A bad CEO can do harm and stop a company from succeeding and growing. Just look at Microsoft and Steve Ballmer. Microsoft's stock price was flat for practically his entire tenure. Under Tim Cook, Apple went from a $400 billion company to a $2+ trillion company.

You seem to also forget that Tim Cook was Steve Jobs' right-hand man when he was Apple's Chief Operating Officer. Are you telling me Steve Jobs and the board of directors made a bad decision in making Cook CEO?

The only success Tim Cook has had in 10 years is the Watch.

Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple's App store and services.

While I agree he's no Steve Jobs (i.e. imaginative), he's still done a heck of a job leading Apple.

This is what I've said months ago! movies like palmer cost 7 million, Hala 5 million, The banker cost apple 11 million. Those cheap movies can be 10 small movies and 2 big-budget films each year. It would be easy since they're so inexpensive to make costing as small as 50 million for 10 low-budget films.

Apple has heard the complaints about that and the latest TV App on iDevices has a separate tab dedicated to the ATV+ content.
