4k mainstream should mean 1080p prices should drop, and 4k prices should not exceed those of 1080p. $20 for non-physical compressed media is insane. If I'm going to pay that much money, I better get maximum quality with no compression. VHS were $15 for new releases. DVD were $15 for new releases. Blu-ray is $15-20 for new releases. 4k at $20 for streaming media is a no-go.

I wouldn’t spend that much on a single movie that has restrictions. If it was DRM free then it’d be my main method of getting films. But currently I can buy a Blu-ray, watch it on any of my games consoles or rip it to my cloud storage. There’s no way I’d buy from iTunes as it currently is, being limited to streaming to Apple TV only.

Hollywood has no sense of value. They've lived under the protection of IP monopoly for so long that they can't get their heads around the idea that providing value results in better returns.
"IP monopoly" as in anti-piracy? It's unfair because both parties know that consumers can always resort to piracy if the content isn't cheap enough.

Good luck trying to keep it scratch/dust free. I personally am done with discs. Besides. I already pay that much ($20) for HD iTunes movies anyway.
Blu-ray Discs are incredibly tough. Having owned them for years now none of my discs have taken damage, also, one can rip optical media to any format one desires without DRM and in much better quality. It’s then possible to stream it to any TV or device and not just Apple’s devices.

At those prices, I'd rather just buy the disc with much better sound and picture.
I'd gladly do that if I had a Blu Ray player that wasn't a steaming pile of poo. And I've tried multiple, including Sony-branded ones. Either bad interface or straight up glitchy. The box crashes, then I check on it and see a "Java inside" sticker. No wonder.

I like discs because there's no annoying login involved to play them, but I want the thing to just play my disc when I pop it in, or else.

So Apple wants a lower price for content that they don't produce while they charge higher, than industry standard, prices for their hardware.
They want a market price for content they buy while they charge market prices for their hardware. They make their own content too, but believe me, that's not a good thing.

Oh give me a break with your faux morality bull ****. The movie industry is a racket and everyone knows it. Music used to be pirated like crazy because no one wanted to pay $1.29 for every song they wanted, or be forced to buy a $15 album. So you know what that industry did? They woke up and switched to streaming. Piracy dropped by a ridiculous amount because now there was an AFFORDABLE and easy way to legitimately do what they had wrongly been doing up until that point.

When the movie industry does something similar, I'll stop pirating their stuff. In the meantime, I'm not going to help line the pockets of big studios and distributors, especially by paying $30 for 90 minutes of screen time...

Yes, all thieves have a justification for being a thief. bottom line is piracy is theft and real people get hurt by it, just because YOU think you are ENTITLED to stuff you can't afford.

You're pretending like movies are necessary for survival. They make the product, they choose the price, don't-like-it-don't-buy-it, end of story. No justification for piracy to exist, even if it did end us up in a better place.

I haven’t told anyone how to do anything., but here you are telling people they aren’t entitled to get whatever they want. Sounds a bit hypocritical to me.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But come live in the REAL world with the rest of us. In what universe are you ENTITLED to get EVERYTHING YOU want?

Why would anyone pay for a movie when things like torrent and VPN exist?
Cause either they want to support the creators, or it's not worth their time to bother with that stuff. For me, it's easier to pirate than to buy (****ing DRM gets in the way), but not so for most people.

It took me 24 hours to stop laughing enough to post on here! I pity those who are conned in to paying to 'own' an intangible, brief, often sub-par experience. Then they sell you the same thing again and again in different formats! You are part of a machine that is transferring your often modest incomes into the pockets of the super rich. To defend it, I suppose, is part of your illusion.

Was not aware they don't scratch..do have few Blue Ray disks, but honestly can't be bothered to ever use them. Streaming through Netflix and some movies I bought on iTunes is what I want and quality is quite good for me. I honestly can't go back to physical discs (having to find the disc, loading it to the player, switching to players channel and all that crap) Stream or won a digital copy works great for me.

So long as you have a physical copy of that digital content, meaning you download that movie and don't rely on it always being available to re-download from iTunes, then "permanent" applies. If you buy something today and expect to be able to download it 4 months from now, you are gambling that Apple's deal with that studio for that movie/show hasn't changed and caused it to be removed: Many Purchased Movies Missing from Library

So you posted a link to a 4 year old comment? Wow.
[doublepost=1504102704][/doublepost]I guess many people here are just really old and feel they need to "own" the disc.

As usual, with discs, if you lose them, get robbed, fire, flood, etc. its gone. You are not getting it back.
If I lose my iPhone my movies are still with Apple. Forever.

For Blu-rays, I have to find the movie on my shelf. Open the case. Insert the disc. Hope my Blu-ray player firmware is up to date so it even works. Press play. Wait for all the (some unstoppable) trailers to load. Want to finish in the bedroom? Repeat several steps and find where I left off.

For ATV or any other streaming device I can digitally search, find, click, play. No trailers. No garbage.

I'm always amazed how many people thing blu-rays are "superior" when so many films are not yet available on the format, or out of print, or "limited special editions" for $35 through some ****** no-name studio that the major players have licensed there films to because they can't even sell them. etc.

Does everyone realize Blu-ray has had YoY losses? What about retailers size for them shrinking? What about lesser catalog titles?

I know, I know, better sound and picture!!!! But really, few people care, especially the consumers who watch movies via streaming.

I have so many damn discs that are worth nothing. I was such a fool. I'm waiting for the day when I say screw it and dump them.

Wth are talking about? It’s obvious from your replies you haven’t read my original post properly or you simply do not comprehend. I haven’t implied anyone being entitled to, or not entitled to anything. Even if you somehow think I did imply that people were entitled to everything they want you replied to another’s post saying the opposite... Your reply to my original post was “and who are you to tell people how to” but here is you’re reply to another post in the same multiquote saying “Youaren't ENTITLED to get whatever you want, whenever you want.” and that is being hypocritical. You should take your time and read before responding, because in no shape or form I implied people were or were not entitled to everything they want.

I will be very pissed when my HD purchases will not be upgraded to 4K automatically. That's what should happen, but I'm entirely expecting it won't, just like SD movies won't. Which really pisses me off, because I have 106 iTunes movies now. I'm not paying $25 to upgrade each of them. Heck, I'd consider paying some sort of difference/fee to upgrade them, but I'm not outright buying second licenses for each.

why should they be? My DVDs were not automatically upgraded to Blu-ray. Nor were my VHS to DVD. You are not entitled to it.

My 2010 Prius didn't get changed to a brand new model either free of charge.

Good luck trying to keep it scratch/dust free. I personally am done with discs. Besides. I already pay that much ($20) for HD iTunes movies anyway.
But that doesn't mean the iTunes movies are priced correctly.

Personally, I use the same tools people clean camera lenses to keep the disc surfaces dust-free. I also educate my kids to take care of the movie discs, holding them by the edges, and always keep them in the original cases, so they can keep watching them everyday.

The only problem with buying the 4K blu ray is that the digital copy currently offered on all 4K blu ray discs is a 1080 copy. I would buy the blu ray if the digital copy was 4K as well, but until that happens I'll stick with digital so that I can view it across devices.

Incorrect. Some of the digital codes provide UHD digital copies on VUDU, FandangoNow, Sony. I buy codes all the time and have probably 2 dozen UHD movies in my library from people selling me their codes from their 4k purchase. Not all, but some. Maybe 30%. Would be higher but Sony locks all of their content to their special TVs only.

Is it even possible to tell the difference between blu-ray and iTunes HD nowadays unless you've got eagle sharp eyes?

It has nothing to do with age. ;)

I did post a link to a 4 year old comment, but only because there are relevant replies within the current year, the current month even. I wouldn't expect everyone to read that far down, though.

For me, I have no problem with owning the right to download or stream digital content when I want to, so long as when I buy it, at any future point in time, I will be able to exercise that right to access that same content. We aren't completely there with digital content "ownership". That is the reason many feel the need to "own" a copy they feel they can control better than the risks of losing the ability to download or stream content they purchased.

This is not true. UHD Blurays are 2160p. You can play them using special UHD players or Xbox S only. The box usually contains two disks. One is UHD and the other is normal 1080p BD.

Good luck trying to keep it scratch/dust free. I personally am done with discs. Besides. I already pay that much ($20) for HD iTunes movies anyway.

I don't use them for coasters of frisbee golf. They come out of the case and into the player. Out of the player and in to the case. It's not difficult.

Try Oppo or Panasonic. Never had any problems with their players.

Samsung player here. Worlds worst remote though. At least as far as I have had experience with remotes.
