I don’t think you are following. This is possible right now on a T2 Mac with everything working properly and no hacks.

App takes still photo. Light does turn on but not for very long. How long does light stay on to take a still photo? Would you notice it?

An unauthorized use of the camera is literally a hack.

If one is lazy enough to give sketchy apps unlimited access to their camera, then they need a lot more than a piece of electrical tape to protect them on the internet.

Apple just added a hardware switch to 2020 iPad pros. I think it’s an issue that Apple acknowledges is real, and Apple may include similar hardware in Macs coming forward. I wouldn’t be so fast to dismiss the concerns.

People think it's a malware issue. But that's only one part.

Many people simply don't like a camera lens staring at them, even if it's their own, disconnected or out of film, and turned off.

Just like some people think mirrors in the office (except for theatrical dressing rooms) are bad luck.

Wait till someone tells them what that thing in the front of their phone is.

That was your definition. I have higher standards for what a "hack" is :)

Is covering the camera a trend in recent years? I have noticed in my workplaces that more people are covering their camera with a piece of tape within the last 2-3 years. I hardly see this five years ago in my workplace.

There’s no point covering the camera, Apple will just enable x-ray vision mode, spy on you, and tell the lizard space men everything you’re doing. /s

The Edward Snowden movie and documentary id say, cant say it really had an effect on me though

Ooooo £600 repair right there.

I know because I spoke to Apple today about my antiglare coating coming off my retina MacBook Pro. They won’t fix it under warranty and wanted £575.80 to sort the manufacturing defect out.

There was a repair extension program for this, but I think it expired last year. Apple already made good on this.

For real dude? It's called closing your MacBook lid. For the rest of the time, there is a very obvious green light that is hardwired into the power for the camera itself. Any time the camera is powered, the light is powered via the same power pathway.
It's not that simple. Apple themselves say that the camera is used to adjust the display brightness and Truetone, so the camera is probably powered and accessed by the OS all the time, and the LED is controlled by software (probably on the T2 or some other controller). As noted in an earlier post, the micro-controller-based solution in their older Macs was hacked a few years ago. Who knows how safe the newer solution is.

I’ve always thought that this tendency is absurd. I even know people who do this on iPads!

My iPad has previously connected via FaceTime. By it self. Without me touching it. To someone else. AND there was no indication on the screen that it had done this. So with this first hand experience, I can assure you, it is not absurd.

I dont understand the point of the thread. I put a ShaggyMax cloth on the keyboard and close the laptop. I have never has the glass cracked. I cannot see how thin tape would cause a problem. This is really about how you carry the laptop and if enough of a rise at that specific point could cause the panel to flex causing the glass to break.

I submit that the top should have never been designed to be that sensitive. Its Apple fault.

People only cover their cameras if they have something to hide. Want to spy on me? Go ahead, view at your own risk. I'm not responsible for what you may see.

Cut a piece of tape and attach to the center of electrical tape. Protects the lens, allows you to easily pull it back when video conferencing, and can easily reattach.
