This is an uncharacteristic statement by Apple, it smells of fear and desperation. Usually their legal statements are confident and defiant. I think they are truly afraid of the consequences of this decision.

Apple will buy Qualcomm.

Thats the better play than settling on the license fees.

Ah I did not know this. Seems like Apple should have jumped on this around the time they jumped on the “A” series.

"Huawei makes its own baseband modem and SoC".[/QUOTE]

Intel also makes its own modems, yet is tied to Qualcomm patents, or was.

How independent is Huawei in its research and development, in this context, the modems? It boasts a lot of patents, yet seems to depend on USA tech companies - as do all (almost) Chinese companies. It is not a bad thing - the interdependency of companies from all over the world, especially USA on China and China on USA.

"Drumpf"ism is a phase - not as much as the nationalism in China; China has the upper hand in this.

Technologically and economically, the "West" has the upper hand - as proven by the ZTE storm.

How will such a ban affect Huawei - the world leader now? Are they technologically independent from a Western blockade? I don't know, so I ask. I get varying reports on this, like the one quoted.

If this is all a result of the tariff war, the only losers are the consumers. Both countries benefit from the "tax" in the short time, and if sustained, it will just be a tariff globe, with only more taxes going to the politicians and governments.

Like I said, Apple (and other US companies) will never win selling in China. I'd like to see them pull their production out of there if they give up. I'm all for open trade for economic reasons, but for other reasons I'd rather we not do business with China anymore.

The 15,000 in Austin probably make more than all of the 5 million in China.

Apple has 5 million Chinese working for it in China - at all (Foxconn, etc.) levels?

Impressive!

"I'm warning you, this will hurt me a lot more than it'll hurt you!"

It is funny to see China actually getting involved with international IP cases. The cynic in me has a uneasy feeling China is doing this to promote their own national phone manufacturers.

I think that the Chinese government actually have not said anything about the matter in this case, exactly because they are between two American corporations. The last year China has touted that they will be more stringent on ip/patent laws and it is in their interest to show that it is so, this would in this case be a perfect example.

Poor Tim , has to do what his government tells him..... and that is not Trump.

In a sad way this is a good result, as apple can bully and wait out all other competitors.

I fail to understand the Apple haters supporting Qualcomm. If Qualcomm wins, it spells disaster to Android as well. Qualcomm is pretty much holding Android back. Look at the dismal state of Android wear thanks to Qualcomm doing practically nothing on the chip side. If you guys think Qualcomm has Apple by the balls, well Qualcomm is already squeezing the nuts of Android OEMs. Only Samsung and Huawei have some leverage against Qualcomm, but even they have to use Qualcomm for many of their handsets.

If Apple sells their new mobile phones at all price ranges then people will have reasons to side with Apple (or any other) with Qualcomm defiant attitudes as described above Android mobiles are competitively priced.

If Android world also goes like Apple with mobiles costing them @ $800+tax for base model and further upto $1500+taxes, people will definitely side with Apple. Also Apple is not short of making big profits all these years, hence people may not necessarily perceive Apple's position is good for them with ever increasing prices.

Good.
Come home Apple, you're better off without that monster on your back.
Let China collapse and do the world a favor.

Qualcomm is what's driving Android. And no, it won't spell disaster for Android, as the Android device manufacturers seem to be paying for what they've licensed from Qualcomm.
and YET far cheaper than iPhones with better specs. Only thing is that Android base OS is not developed by them still they need to customise the OS significantly to make it look unique

I'm pretty sure if Trump keeps playing chicken with China, Apple's going to end up being a sacrificed pawn in that game.
/metaphor mixed intentionally
I doubt that company will be Apple.

I still don't understand - How do you stop importing a product into a country - when it's manufactured in that country and then exported out to the rest of the world?

Free trade zones.

But it sets prescedents. Most Android OEMs are already operating at thin margins. Their whole business will be at the beholden of Qualcomm.

We are already seeing the trends. Big OEMs like Xiaomi are already moving to Mediatek (Redmi 6). Same thing with Oppo. Others are sticking to older (cheaper) Qualcomm chips (eg SD425, SD630). And of course there’s Android wear that is going nowhere.

China is too big to fall!

I'm not saying this as a joke - its strength culturally, historically and in its global position now, with almost all Asia behind it, and enough nations in other continents on its hook, it is too powerful to fail over electronics domination.

Apple: blah blah blah blah we are hypocrites and don’t like receiving the same behaviour we love to dish out blah blah blah..

Oh and we are utterly guilty and will issue a software fix so we don’t steal patents from Qualcomm.... blah blah Qualcomm are evil, honest, blah blah..

Yeap, pretty much sums up Apple statement there.

Aren’t you realizing that Android OEMs are also pushing up their prices? Heck, look at OnePlus. The original OnePlus One was only $299. The OnePlus 6T is almost double that. Samsung is selling handsets with SD425 for $200-$300. Xiaomi can only hold its value by sacrificing build (Pocophone using plastic) or using Mediatek (Redmi 6).

Hating Apple on this is illogical and only worsen the state of Android development as it is allowing Qualcomm to continue squeezing the nuts off Android OEMs.

Maybe don’t sign licensing agreements that you don’t plan on paying for? Apple knew exactly what they were doing when they accepted Qualcomm’s terms. They are just mad because they don’t want to lose the total $ increase/unit from the % agreement they made when the phone used to be $650 and is now $1000.

Yeap exactly, and it’s now come back to bite them hard. And the court case continues with Qualcomm winning so far.. when it comes to Apple they are usually guilty, this time they cannot wiggle there way out of it and have a sales ban. And the fact they are releasing a software update to FIX the patent breaches they are guilty off, just shows they cannot be trusted in what they say.
Think of Apple as Teresa May, consistent permanent liars.
