You got that right… its a phone, not a computer. Its nice to be able to do a little email, messaging, and web browsing while on the go, but having my phone fit into a pocket is the most important functionality to me. If i need to do more than communicate I will go to a machine more suited for that task…

If Apple goes any bigger and doesn’t offer a model more small form factor than they do now, personally, I will just move to another brand… I am not so loyal to Apple to just buy something that serves me no purpose or it’s uncomfortable to use. There are other options out there…

Move to another brand? LOL. Let me know what brand would that be.

Let me know how that goes with availability, service/support, and software updates. Good luck.
I don’t understand the above response. It has no value at all. But I don’t intend to let it know anything, because it so much better😀😀😀. What is wrong is to assume that one’s preferred product is better than the rest. It’s only best what works best for the individual. I really don’t care what is best for others, it really doesn’t concern me. I only care what works best for me, that’s what makes me happy. So I won’t impose my happiness on anyone. 😀Have a happy day 😀

Hey. you do know the comment was talking about the Mini-sized alternatives right?

The Zenphone 9 is almost the same size as the regular 6.1in iPhone 14.

Yes. So if someone wants an alternative to the mini..then it’s the zenfone9. If someone doesn’t like this or that then revert to something older. 😀But whatever makes you happy is the imperative😀

Based on the most recent display panel order data provided by Ross Young, it's clear this was the right move for Apple and for customers.

  • iPhone 13 mini received about 5 million units. The selling price is $729.
  • iPhone 14 Plus is getting 20 million panels. The selling price is $929.

Which one generates more revenue? The data suggests customers are buying iPhone 14 at the same rate as iPhone 13 last year, but the mix has shifted significantly to iPhone 14 Plus.

They made a profit on all 5 million units….

Not the best time to get 12/13 Mini right now in 2022. Apple to blame for it.

When there were only rumors of 12 mini, they introduced SE 2020 in March, which i of course bought and then never jumped on a full price ship of 12 mini 6 month later when they came up with announcement because I already spent my money on a "small" phone.

Later, I got 12 minis in one occasion for $112 from metro and $350 from Walmart. All of this fire sales were actually from day 1 of the new phone releases. Logic is absurd - you don't want to discount your new phone from day 1. While owning 12 mini and 13 mini, I figured out 1 thing: regular 12 and regular 13 never got such a huge discount, so I jumped on regular 13 couple times because it depreciates far less.

Right now, have a good luck finding any deal less than full price from Apple on 13 mini. Now they are trying to make it luxury and squeeze money from people - like if you want smaller phone then you need to pay for it. On the other hand, there are lots of discounts on regular 13/14 or even Pros/maxes.

Glad at least somebody else remembers that
yes Steve Jobs back 12 years ago said something like that. Back when Instagram/Snapchat/Social Media apps were just in their infancy. Back when people ordered cabs by phone call (no uber/lyft). Back when nobody ran their entire business from a iPhone (square) etc etc

You do realize time change right?

There is not a doubt in my mind, that Steve Jobs would have eventually changed his mind about the ideal size of iPhones had he lived longer. Hell the iPhone 5 was released just a year after his death meaning he definitely knew the benefits of a bigger screened iPhone.

Doctors used to say cigarettes were not dangerous to your health 50 years ago. Should we still listen to what those doctors said 50 years ago?

Steve Jobs was involved in the planning of the iPhone 6/6 plus so for sure he was aware of the benefits of phablets.

I respect anyone who likes the Mini. It’s such a nice little phone, in my opinion, I could even say arguably the most aesthetically pleasing. I used to be a small phone fan myself, but a couple things happened:

I got a little older. I can’t quite read the screen as well as I used to.

I use my phone differently compared to 2012. I feel like Apps are optimized for modern screens now, where the Mini is an afterthought.

That being said, I use a 14 Pro now. I previously used a 11 Pro Max. I find the Pro to be quite compact and easy to use while having enough screen real estate for it not to feel like too significant of a trade off.
I was in the same boat you are with appreciating the mini size, but after using the 11pro size (which is smaller than the 11) and loving it, I think the 14 pro is where it’s at. The 14 pro is just a little taller, but same width. I’d still prefer the tallness of the 11pro, but I would live.

and coming back to the mini after the 11pro the ~15% scaling of the screen in the Mini is noticeable and kind of annoying.

(I would use dismay zoom, but it makes some funky GUI glitches) 11F07AEC-0B38-4FC5-947C-098C291A531C.png

I really feel the opposite. It was the same tech fit into less space. Miniaturization is expensive! The mini should have been positioned as an upgrade not a downgrade. The only reason I don't have a mini is that it was too cheap for the trade in deal I was doing and would have been a waste. Anecdotally, the Pro Mini would be the best selling iPhone SKU by far, even if (especially if?) it was the most expesive. People buy whatever marketing tells them is the flashiest thing they can afford. If the new hotness was "look how small the new iPhone is, and still with more features than last year" I think that'd sell.
Preach.

The keynote and marketing was terrible/nonexistent for the mini.

Is just just a total: “and! iPhone teeny-tiny! Aren’t we just so Apple 😇. Next”

There was no talk of the benefits of having a small phone, and no talks of engineering design necessary for making it tiny.

People used to ooh and ahh and clap when Apple announced “and we made the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet”.
Theyd go 🦇💩 crazy in audience.

Dynamic island was flipping cool and a very nice surprise. It’s just unfortunate that iOS is optimized for the 6.1” screen now… and not at all for a 5.4” screen. I mean just look at messages with a mini… you can’t see very much of the messages when typing. Is it like that on the 6.1” screen?

You really don't want to shoot yourself in the feet by doing so. Praising mini for 5% of buyers will crash the market of bigger phones, which is 95% of sales and another 3 models in selection. Apple is hiring and paying for researchers hundreds in thousands $ for a reason. That is why talking about benefits of a smaller phone is not going to be good for Apple.

I wonder now if the next SE will be 4.7” or 6.1” — because I don’t see them going to any other size based on the potential formatting issues that some are bringing up. Or maybe they establish new sizes — 5”, 6”, and 7”? Would this cause problems?

I saw a video where someone mentions that a leaker said the next SE could most likely be an XR and the 2024 SE may use the mini body:

The XR body makes sense since it could presumably use the same body as the 6.1” now — or they may stick with a 4.7” size, but I don’t see the point in going to 5.4” since it is an outlier size. But I really have no real idea — but I do think the next SE will have to ditch the front TouchID button.

If iPhones never got bigger, UX/UI designers would still manage with those limitations. I'm just glad Reachability exists, but giant iPhones still feel physically unwieldly, and I don't even want to think about how I'm supposed to one-hand a giant Android...

The form factor of the mini was fine, except spent little time on marketing it, and finding a solution to enable better battery life. Bigger isn't always better, and I feel Apple created this size as an afterthought.

This scenario assumes that they release the mini as they did as a sub-pro device that its only features are that it’s small.

That is not what MR small phone lovers wanted. (To repeat ad nauseum)

They could have made a pro featured mini and charged $999. (They do have control over pricing, just to point out the obvious.)

If they actually made a mini worth having, they could put effort into and market as such; and it wouldn’t cannibalize or shoot anyone in the foot.

Sadly for me I will be holding on to mini for as long as possible and switch to another similar sized device when it comes to market even if it’s Android. Size trade off is a huge for me. The reason I switched to iOS was mini and it will be reason for me to switch back to Android as my main device. :)
