I have a jailbroken Iphone 3gs and I love it (thanks to the dev team that liberated it and made it multitask). The pad is a step backwards... period (pun intended)

Why do you care so much? Why not just shrug your shoulders, say "not for me" and go on with your life instead of expending so much emotional energy here?

Yes.... you probably have an IQ around 100 (average) or less... and steve is betting on this...

Apparently, you only bothered to join so you could vent about the iPad. So, we've established that you dislike it greatly, prefer to insult those who actually find it may meet their personal needs rather than accept the fact it may be useful to them, and are seemingly incapable of anything resembling critical discussion, preferring ad homenim attacks, which is befitting someone that is 15, not 45.

I'm terribly sorry that Apple so ruined your week.

Because I have loved apple and I see the company going the wrong direction... 90% of the internet was "underwhelmed" by this this. I expect 70% were blatantly disappointed and scratching their heads. Again, the bar was set with the iphone 3gs... going backwards to an oversized ipod touch??? If people buy it, it's like saying to apple... sure, we will pay you for doing a half-assed job. I would expect the pad from a group of postal employees... that is how magical and revolutionary it was....

Postal employee 1: Uh, apple needs a magical, revolutionary tablet... people are expecting it to offer a great internet experience and the pressure is on. What should we do?

Postal employee 2: Uh... how about a big ipod touch? One that still won't run FLASH, and why put a camera on it?... I know the iphone has one... but uhhhhh. And let's keep it simple for granny... one apple program at a time... uhhhhhhhhhhh

Postal employee 1: Won't they be disappointed?

Postal employee 2: uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Yes, I did join to vent about the pad... true....

It probably HAS a camera.

Entirely possible. Could be hidden in the bezel. All the people at the media event got to play with it but in the dark. Makes it difficult to see things hidden behind the bezel.

Apples own marketing online could easily hide this fact in the photos and videos as well. Apple always holds stuff back to keep competitors guessing. Especially given the fact that this isn't in stores yet. Why give them a leg up. Not saying its a given but a nice possibility:)

Are you one of those guys that goes out and tips over cars and throws rocks at the police when your favorite football team loses? Just curious...I mean there are people whose ego's are so wrapped up in the their sports teams, the brand of car they drive, the type of computer that they use etc that it kind of smudges their ability to keep things in perspective. Are you one of those?

Apple WAS my favorite team... and they just fumbled the ball....

Hope springs eternal... I'll buy someone a pad, if, at the last minute, they announce that safari will support flash, Netfilx will work in safari, and it has a hidden front facing camera for granny to video chat with the kids over wifi.... In other words... if they deliver the MINIMUM most informed customers would expect....

hmmmm....and here you are on MacRumors trying to tip over cars and throw rocks at the police....

Looks like it's pretty hard to tip over a car by yourself...

Google "ipad disappointment." Currently, the car is upside down and on fire.

I may be in the minority on here, as I haven't completely succumbed to the brainwashing as of yet.... (depends on the thread, though... most people here seem to think this thing is a let-down)

Also, CNN.Com had an article from wired that was basically marketing spin for apple... check out the responses there: 90% negative. The Australians appear to be pretty brainwashed, however (i dunno?), but at least 75% of the online media and commenters think this thing is "underwhelming" and a joke.... if you think it is anything special... you're in the minority currently... but then who knows... people actually thought Palin was viable candidate for vice president... that was scary too, but it happened...

I guess steve thought we couldn't handle a giant iphone (much less a more functional tablet), so he just slopped us a giant ipod touch...

Google "ipad disappointment." I'm well within the majority:)

Just like the iPod introduction and even the iPhone.

It just amazes me to the point of scarey that people expected basically a full operating system in this thing. Anything short of an iMac in tablet form not much thicker than an iPhone, and people are all "the sky is falling".

It's $499 and if you don't jailbreak, then too bad so sad.

Flash = iMobileCinema
Multitasking = Backgrounder
for 3g = tether off iPhone via bluetooth

I'm getting off these forums cuz frankly, IMO, the stupidity level and complete lack of vision of some of these posts is just too much for me.

video conferencing

I just tried to video chat with my wife on our MacBooks... Holding them in our hands. Thats hard as crap! You get dizzy and nauseated real fast. To work I think it would have to be docked and setting still, then the camera could go in the dock. You would be able to type and video chat or use a bluetooth mouse maybe who knows but to video chat freehand sucks.

Front facing camera

Really, think about the Medical add ons that were featured last year for the iPhone. Is it THAT far off to say someone will come up with a web came attachment? Say it's a webcam that's integrated into a iPad case, maybe it swivels on an axis so you can snap a photo? It could still happen and i'm a little suprised there isn't one out for iPhone. Unless a/v import is verbotten -but there are the new SD/USB attachments out now-so I see a big, clunky possibilty.

And really, although I have thought of it- where would you put the camera. The "top". What if you wanted to hold it sideways. One of Jobs selling points was that it just works no matter how you hold it
.
/end rant.

Jailbreaking is wonderful...(but most people on here are literally scared to do it... it's "illegal" to use your apple device as you see fit!)

I just wish the jailbreak community could get flash working on safari (since apple refuses to). Imobilecinema is OK, but I found it to be buggy and it still didn't get me netflix (silverlight) or hulu.

I wonder if the majority of people on here realize how many "blue legos of arrogance" they will be seeing when they use safari on this thing?

NO HULU, NO NETFLIX... broken flash sites... (flash does suck on mac, but it's a reality....) I expect there will be a lot of returns by people that really don't understand how pervasive flash and other things are that apple refuses to support.

I doubt the medical community will jailbreak the devices so they can run their software appropriately... other than that... great thought....

Again, so what? Your aspiration in life is to try to identify the majority and then side with them. Then be proud of it? (Of course, the vast majority predicted doom for the iPod and for the iPhone too. In fact, the vast majority predicted doom for the GUI computer OS interface. In fact, the vast majority predicted doom for Apple Computer, Inc.

A lot of people WANT a giant iPod Touch. It remains to be seen how many, but what does it matter? Those that want it will buy it. Those that don't, won't. If it's a viable product, it will stay in the market. If it's not, it will go away. Maybe it's a Newton, maybe it's an iPod. Who cares? Apple made a bundle on the iPod, and certainly survived the Newton. Life will go on whichever way it goes.

A camera in the book would work, then you could stand it up to use it??

There is very little useful stuff as add-ons or apps for the medical community. Certainly portable devices could be made to do useful things, but by far that usefulness depends on the device's ability to interface with an existing EHR system, and that just ain't gonna happen. There are too many of them with no commonality between them. Maybe, probably, someday but not now. There is absolutely no money in the system for that kind of stuff. Intergration with existing systems is where data management in medicine is and that is just simply too expensive. Epocrates and the handful of existing "medical calculator" apps, while occasionally useful, just aren't anywhere near useful enough by themselves to get someone to buy an iPad (jailbroken or not) or a any other kind of tablet or hand-held device.

Having said that, one thing I am certain of is that when doctors start carrying around portable computing devices for patient care interface, it ain't gonna be an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Way too small to be useful.

lol What a nice company some you get on your knees for and... uh, bow.

It's not like they earnestly thought of all the innovative features they could, released it and went: "oh, nuts! what about feature X? guess it'll have to wait for v.2"

They purposely held back on you. So they'll get people hooked on a mild form of crack and eventually increase its potency with each incarnation.

A $8 video camera it costs them to insert and mark up a good 20% and they held back on you!!! lmao :D You people are a laugh, you are. Your loyalty to such rats. Such a petty little thing to exclude when it can help tilt the scales to sale or no sale.
It's a battery killer for one. Second. What did you beloved Microsoft show with their so called tablet? Oh right not much. So laugh all you want because this is far better than what was "shown" and gasp they priced it and tested it, not like your "HOLY CRAP WE HAVE TO GET SOMETHING OUT BEFORE APPLE" boys. Ours will work, yours....oh let's wait and see.

Tether will not be offered since there is a "affordable" 3g plan.

They can't stop "tethering." The iPad will latch onto a wi-fi signal. As long as the tethering source tethers via wi-fi, iPad won't know the difference. Even in the U.S. you can use iProxy on iphone for this purpose (at least for web access)
