There needs to be a GPS chip inside the watch to enable it to be used as a fitness monitor without the need to be tethered by Bluetooth to an iPhone. That's the most glaring change they need to make.

The right choice should have been a GPS sensor over a worthless Facetime camera.

Anybody buying a first gen anything has to expect updates in the near future, updating within a year isn't a marketing move its the exponential growth of technology. I'll hand mine down to a worthy family member and then I get the new hotness. This is the Game of Upgrades.

A watch is not like a phone... especially a watch at these price points. Apple can't refresh every year and think that people will dump their old one just to replace it with a new model. IMO

Agreed.

Bad news for the early adopters.

Bad news? What are you talking about? I have the Apple Watch RIGHT NOW on my wrist and it's AWESOME.

They'll come out with a better one.. so I'll sell this one and buy the better one... rinse and repeat. I've done it with iPhones for years. Really blows my mind how people can't grasp this.

I think this is a mistake. What about those people who spent $10K on the first generation Apple Watch? They get obsolete just like that? Apple Watch 2 should come out in 2018. People are still finding about its existence. At the end, it's just a watch, not a smartphone which we need to be buying every now and then.

How does a Facetime camera make gen 1 obsolete when all of us have at least 4" screens in our pockets that do the same thing?

Not really. I am perfectly satisfied with my watch thus far. As apps availability increases it will get even better. The addition of GPS is of more interest to me than a camera or new materials. And GPS hasn't been a significant issue for me anyway. A Face Time camera adds little benefit IMO. Regardless, I don't have much invested in the Apple Watch sport that I wouldn't hesitate buying a new model if the additional features were truly of value to me.

No regrets with my purchase.

Apple is planning a second-generation Apple Watch with new features including a front-facing FaceTime video camera, expanded Wi-Fi capabilities and possibly additional models based on new materials, according to 9to5Mac. The report claims the so-called "Apple Watch 2" is likely to be introduced in 2016 following the release of WatchOS 2 and native Apple Watch apps in the fall.

The new FaceTime camera will reportedly be built into the Apple Watch's top bezel and enable users to make and receive FaceTime calls on their wrists. Apple previously announced at WWDC that WatchOS 2 will have a new FaceTime Audio feature for Wi-Fi-based calling, and the new software also enables Apple Watch users to answer or reject FaceTime video calls through a paired iPhone.

A new Wi-Fi chip inside the Apple Watch 2 will expand the wrist-worn device's iPhone-free Wi-Fi capabilities for basic tasks, possibly including text messaging, emailing and up-to-date weather data. The new wireless chipset will also enable Find my Watch for tracking a lost, stolen or misplaced Apple Watch using Wi-Fi router triangulation technology as opposed to GPS.

Despite gaining several new features, the Apple Watch 2 will likely have similar battery life as the original model. The report claims that Apple has conducted market research and determined that, despite early concerns, most customers are satisfied with their Apple Watch's battery life, allowing Apple engineers to focus their efforts on other areas besides battery improvements.

Apple is also said to be exploring different Apple Watch variations beyond the Sport, Watch and Edition models currently available, in an effort to attract customers at price points between $1,000 and $10,000. The report claims it is possible, but not certain, that Apple may release new Apple Watch models based on metals such as titanium, tungsten, palladium or platinum.

This is EXACTLY why I haven't purchased one yet... There are somethings that Apple makes that im willing to splurge on in a first generation this watch wasn't one of them. to me its like an iPad... Once I buy one im not replacing it for a while so im going to hold on to it for as long as possible

I think by 2050, they will have an awesome watch. You should hold off till then!

How perfect. Every time Apple screws you and takes your money I hope you remember to say thank-you.

I don't consider then "screwing me". They sell a product that I like at a reasonable price. And so I choose to buy that product.

It's a very polite reasonable transaction. I get a watch. And get money for designing and building the watch. Both of us are happy.

Meh.... Am i the only one who is not a fan of phone calls via my watch?? I only use it to show people that it is possible - other than that it is very awkward and almost unnecessary...

Features i would like to see however:

Entirely water proof watch
More intuitive OS

Also, i'd like to be able to upgrade the internals of my watch without having to buy a whole new watch... It's my understanding the the screen down to the sensors is all one piece therefore this shouldn't be a problem - though something tells me they will offer this but only for the Edition branded watches.

Bad news for the early adopters.

I get what you are saying but the next AA will be released during the 2016 holiday season and AA OS 3 will be supported by this model so you can enjoy this one for another 14-16 more months, buy the next one or keep it.

do you dump your phone every year or your ipad? I wouldn't expect anything less than a new product every year. The cycle that you decide to buy your products is up to you, but I try to keep them 2-3 years as far as phone / ipad goes. I don't see why the watch would be any different when technology moves so quickly.

In my opinion, once you start adding cameras to the watch, you've gone too far. I'd also hope Apple would do a longer product cycle for watches instead of the yearly one like phones.

This is what I've been truly waiting for! Just look at the first iPhone or first iPad, they are terrible by todays standards especially in terms of form factor and performance.

Ah, yes, but the iPhone 3G, still a great phone! Any product that is 6-8 years old will suck by comparison today. Glad I held off on the Newton because the iPad is way better. ;)

Yeah, my first reaction as well. A watch is even less of a yearly upgrade device as compared to an iPad. People can't be happy about this.
I buy a new car about every five years. The car companies insist on yearly upgrades, but I don't have to play their game. I feel sorry for those who feel they have to buy a new car (or iPad or Apple Watch) just because there is a new version each year.

It's inevitable that they're going to add FaceTime capability to the Watch, because isn't that what we've all seen in sci-fi movies for years? I think it makes some sense, but until Apple goes back to making a small bluetooth headset, having to use a speaker on the watch makes it more of a novelty (who wants everyone to hear your conversations?).

And as far as Apple updating with a Watch V2, they ARE going to offer a newer version with improvements as well as different case materials and bands, but they'll keep selling V1 until V3 is released in a year. That's the plan as it stands today.
