Apple Watch 2 Said to Feature FaceTime Camera, Expanded Wi-Fi Capabilities and New Models

I buy a new car about every five years. The car companies insist on yearly upgrades, but I don't have to play their game. I feel sorry for those who feel they have to buy a new car (or iPad or Apple Watch) just because there is a new version each year.
Why feel sorry for them? I'd be more jealous of someone who can comfortable change car each year!

The Facetime camera alone wouldn't be enough for me to upgrade after a year with the first watch. I've been trying to see how comfortable it would be to make a Facetime video call holding my wrist up to my face, and I can't see that being a viable alternative to just using my phone for that. Maybe it would work for really short video calls, but if the video call is going to be that short, do I really need to make a video call in the first place?

Personally I don't believe this rumor for the simple fact that I can't fathom many people wanting to FaceTime from my watch when your phone, mac or iPad is near me. The wifi stuff, sure that's nice and it'll entice but I don't see the new watch being drastically different from the current one.

Honestly, after 1 month of owning it, I absolutely love my Apple Watch. I already know I will buy the next one too and I will keep my current watch. I laugh at anyone who thinks a second generation watch makes first generation model "obsolete". As long as it displays the time I'll keep it and wear

I bought a Space Grey sport and am currently tempted to buy a Stainless Steel Apple Watch. I'm waiting to see when the iPhone will supports more than one watch. It's absolutely beautiful and works perfectly. I smile every time I turn my wrist and a rare jelly fish emerges from the inky black display. The battery life is incredible and I literally never think about it. It wouldn't make a difference to me if the new one was thinner or lighter. I expect more "editions" to come out and look forward to my second Apple Watch. Unlike any other smart watch, or Apple product, this is the first one I can see myself owning multiples of. I personally can't see myself selling it off.

A watch is not like a phone... especially a watch at these price points. Apple can't refresh every year and think that people will dump their old one just to replace it with a new model. IMO
Do you know how many Apple purchasers there are in the world? There are hundreds of thousands of people who upgrade phones each day! They could refresh each month if they really wanted to

sorry for being out of the loop but like what?
Taking pictures where they shouldn't...

Places like tours where cameras aren't allowed, like LDS Temples, the Boeing Tour, or Intel's clean rooms.

Or worse, like locker rooms, where people expect privacy. I'm kind of spinning into infinity right now, so forgive this rabbit trail on the cameras.

Wonder how many people will be willing to spend between $1k and $10k now it looks like they'll be releasing new models this frequently?

That seems like a waste of time and money.

I wait at least 2 years.

i must say i thought you were just talking about facetime usage since you mentioned your experience using it for phonecalls.

however i 100% agree with you.

I've overwhelmed by the avalanche of evidence you just threw at me. Give me a moment to process it all...

Until you show me facts (and you can't, just as I can't either) your theory holds no more water than mine.

How 'bout this? My argument is logical, and yours isn't?

The whole idea of Apple watch is that it was made to be used for short periods of time. Not half an hour chatting with your girlfriend on watch. I say add camera to it. All additions are welcome. I'm sure Apple wouldn't add anything stupid or something that's not useful to someone. Some people will use it, and some will use it a little or not at all. That's how it is with everything. Just because you don't find any use for it, it doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't.

And how do you think people make FT calls on their iPhones? They don't hold them up their face. They generally hold the phone no higher than chest height and talk. They can do the same with the Watch.

I wanted a camera on the first model. Oh well. Can't wait to get the second one.

My Apple Watch is already outdated.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I wrote a massive blog entry regarding Apple crippling or leaving core features out of a 1st generation product only to seemingly-better the 2nd generation when the refresh comes along. The 1st to 2nd generation of all recent Apple products has been a MAJOR jump; mostly applicable to iOS devices. (Toot toot.)

The original iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and AppleTV all had 3 things in common. I don't see the AppleWatch being any different.

1) Core lacking feature made it in to the second generation.
2) The following model was overhauled, and outlasted the original.
3) Support for the first gen product saw premature EOL due to specs.

I actually just went in to some really deep detail (almost scary, even) so I'll spare the giant post here, and refer people to my blog if they want a lengthy read.

Apple isn't stupid. They don't leave features out because they didn't get to it. Those features are obviously planned. They hold back to leave you wanting more, and they're right every time.

I'm not saying someone else might not find it useful. I'm just saying that it wouldn't be enough for me to say, "My first gen watch doesn't have this. Let me ditch it and buy a new one." I agree that they should add as much as they can, but if this is the major upgrade, I can wait before buying another Apple Watch.

There are very few people that change their phone on a yearly basis. In addition, no one expects you to buy an apple watch each year. Not even Apple. That is only in your head.

Right, but what I'm saying is that holding your wrist so that the watch is pointed at your face (even at chest level) is not nearly as comfortable as holding a phone, not because of weight or anything like that. It has to do with the position of your hand, at least for me. I just don't see the facetime feature as very practical for a watch. Some people may love it, but it's not a must have feature for me.

I'm also a teacher, and I can imagine kids taking pictures of exams using their watches. Very subtle. One more thing for me to look out for. :)

Its a money making tactic. You only give them enough. Never all. Make them come back.

all i wanted was GPS and improve health tracking features. adding a facetime camera to the bezel would make me less likely to buy

Something the Apple watch could easily squash out of existence if they just squeezed an extra day out of the battery for the Apple watch 2. I would happily use a separate watch for my swimming metrics.
Battery life isn't an issue for most people. It lasts all day and you put it on the charger every night, just like you do with your iPad, iPhone etc... I sincerely doubt that battery life is affecting sales significantly.
