Apple Watch 2 Said to Include Thinner 'One Glass Solution' Display

The lack of built-in GPS is still a non-starter for me. GPS chips are so small now, it amazes me the Apple Watch lacks one.

The GPS fucntionality is important to me, as I’m a runner. I would love to have a device I could use during my runs to record my tracks and give me accurate speed and mileage information, without having to lug around my phone.
Battery life

Who told you V2 isn't going to have GPS?

Tim gave me a call and told me. No, seriously, I haven’t seen any rumors suggesting there will be a GPS chip. Talk about cellular connectivity, which would give rudementary GPS capabilities. That doesn’t do it for me however, as I need more accurate data logging, and frequently in locations where there is little to no cellular signal. I am admittadly a fringe case though.

Battery life

My Garmin 310xt will last 20 hours, while recording a GPS track. The chip doesn’t have to be enabled 100% of the time. Phone in proximity? Disable it. Cellular available and not during a workout? Disable it. It’s too bad that with the thinner glass, Apple will make the watch thinner instead of filling that space with useful stuff like …. a bigger battery and a GPS receiver.

From reading various Apple Watch forums it sounds like there's some kind of wifi GPS feature being included in WatchOS 3. So whilst not mega accurate for speed and exact locations, it can map out your route at least.

Perhaps. And that would be useful for most people I’m sure. That just won’t cut it for my activities. I’m frequently in areas with no cellular signal, and I take my sport quite seriously and need a higher level of accuracy in speed and distance tracking. Not being snooty - different people just have different desires.

I know I'm just being kind of unreaslistic - like a professional photographer lamenting about the iPhone not having interchangeable lenses. *sigh*

I had an Apple Watch. It's ok for gen 1 but needs to be a lot faster, a little thinner, integrated gps, and be able to use untethered. A little longer battery also. Duh.

It appears AW2 is only half way there. I'm hopeful v3 will be the one to finally nail it.

Doubtful by Version 2. Even though your being sarcastic, Apple
Probably is working on a sleep tracker, my guess is something other companies have not attempted In a Smart Watch or beyond.

Apple has its own health team dedicated to the Watch, with Health experts experimenting with new technology we have not seen yet. If I recall correctly, Apple even has its own health lab for the Apple Watch. So don't be surprised if we actually do see
A sleep tracker, not yet, but it will be a selling point for those who will truly appreciate it in the future.
I can see the use for it medically, but they need to sort out battery life first. You need to at least be able to hold 48 hour charges or have a like 30 min rapid charge. Battery life is holding it back in this area.

As a gen 1 owner it would take a lot to make me upgrade. I have never once thought the watch was too thick, so that doesn't even matter to me personally.

-2 full days of battery life. 1.5 days does nothing since I charge every night currently.
-complete independence from the phone so I can get text, calls, email, etc. if I leave my phone for some reason or go for a run.

I find myself only using apple apps. Other apps are just a waste of time IMO. There is nothing they do better or faster than just straight up pulling out my phone. Granted I have always thought smartwatches functioned best as a notification tool. Allowing you to leave your phone in your pocket but still know who is texting, emailing, calling, etc.

Are you seriously comparing a watch like this:

garmin.jpg

That doesn't have an OLED screen (not even a color LCD), or a reasonable body to not look "off" in everyday attire (seriously, it looks like a potato!), doesn't have an optical HRM, doesn't have space for a speaker, or a NFC, a Digital Crown, a Taptic Engine, etc. With the Apple Watch?

I prefer an Apple Watch with less battery life than to have to charge it with that "clamp" thing that doesn't even look to be moisture proof!

People looking for a product like the Apple Watch won't even consider such a thing, doesn't matter if it has GPS and lasts 20 hours with everything turned off. It's like shopping for a sports car like a Porsche Caymann, and you coming up with a 1980s Jeep Wrangler, because it has 4 wheel drive a differential lock and a body made of steel that you can bend back!

I had the same problem and bought the Wahoo Ticker X. Read some reviews. It's realy a great device that works with almost every workout app. Very detailed info and offline functionality.

Watches are not that great and accurate as it comes to heart rate monitoring and tracking of your route. Devices like that Ticker X are just what you're looking for.

I dunno. I own three apple watches and it's just failed to provide the sort of utility you'd hope for.

I own three Apple Watches as well, 20 different Watch bands to accompany it and I still wear all three as I have day one proudly. Version 2 Day one.

Gonna be an expensive September. All I want from AW2 is speed, more independence and better battery life.

Very expensive. Very excited for September.

Same. I'd love a real GPS solution. I go hiking a lot, but also running on streets. So I'm covered for running but it's useless elsewhere. I don't think you're being snooty. Other watches have GPS functions and I imagine it will eventually come to the Apple Watch.

Hi
Can I ask which sleep tracking app you recommend?
cheers
Sleep++, it's free on the app store.

The Garmin is also huge and has a 600mah battery, almost triple the size of the battery in the Apple Watch, and it doesn't have a colour display like the Apple Watch, nor does it have apps nor a microphone nor......etc etc

If you're going to compare two products, at least make sure they're even in the same category.
