I wouldn't want another device on my plan, but this would be awesome if you could use the AirPods with it to make phone calls without having to cart a phone around and if they could solve the battery issues that would come with that kind of functionality.

The iWatch will be a flop until the this triple fix occurs.

1) 1 week battery life
2) always on display
3) make it less chunky

Nice wish list! But....

1. No chance! The battery is years away from that level of performance with the amount of tech crammed in the watch.
2. Possible - but it might be a different low level watch face that would just show the time and nothing else.
3. Sorry, not a chance - see point 1! There is even more tech going in to this rumoured version of the watch. If you were lucky it might be 0.000000001mm thinner. It could be wider though, that might give you enough room to make it thinner - but then the straps wouldn't fit!

One thing I would like to see is new watch faces... always want new faces!

Give me a Jack Sparrow face that only activates at 11pm on a Saturday night asking me "Where's the rum gone?" and I am happy. (Not serious... I died a little inside when that poor bloke had to go on stage at WWDC and sell us the Toy Story watch faces. Never have I felt so sorry for someone! He looked so uncomfortable!)

I cannot see why there aren't more 'officially curated' watch faces for sale in a special watch face store. There are a lot of companies out there that could be 'invited' to create a face and special complications - as long as they didn't kill the battery life... That is one way to cut out all the clone watch faces and fart watch faces that Joe Public would churn out.

How about a watch face that is the same as the Clock app on the iPhone for starters, that Swiss train one is lovely. Wonder why it hasn't made its way to the watch yet?

When Apple products are getting slimmer, people are complaining about them not making battery life better. When Apple products aren't getting slimmer, people complain that it's too thick...

I love the design and wouldn't change anything about it. It's just for the better. Now we can use our old watch bands and watch cases.

Casio, ground breaking and market leader in the 80s
From memory James Bond had one. In fact that would be excellent product placement for apple watch in next Bond movie due 2018

My mistake (twas late)
Seiko digital not Casio.http://jamesbondwatches.com/
Can imagine Bond speaking to M on his G3 though. With built in pepper spray, and machine gun. Johnny as a Blofeld or Jeff Bezos.

Hmm... Flop? It's already the best selling smart watch out there. About 50% of my iPhone owing friends have one.

1. They could have a reduced functionality mode. And it swaps between them. I am sure it does already but more aggressive. A week is unlikely for anything this small with current tech... But charging at night is Zero hassle on bedside table.

2. Are you aware how technology works?

3. It is a little chunky - But way less than a lot of dumb watches out there. TAG, G-Shock and even most other smart watches... I could go to a 50mm + screen but I have gym wrists...

What will affect sales more I think...

1. Price - Make it cheaper and people will buy - latest non pro iPad proved that. It's flying out the door.
2. Developer Watch faces - As nice as some are... I want something else - I am sure the Dev Kit is there internally.
3. Camera on the front.

Imagine a theater, museum, cinema or any other dim light environment with several displays always on.

on android wear, the display times out to a dim, non-animated face. So it doesn't light up the cinema or dark area, and uses a lot less power than the full colour, fully animated display when you tilt your wrist. But its plenty to be able to check the time with a glance.

I think this would only be worthwhile if the iPhone sim was cloned.
My understanding is that modern sim cards are impossible to clone.
With that in mind folks will have 2 phone numbers, and 11 digit number are difficult to remember at the best of times.

The other issue, as previously mentioned is cost. Who wants a watch with an ongoing monthly fee, no thanks.

So if the sim was somehow cloned with same iPhone number and was FREE (or £1 or two extra a month) I may be interested.
There is the divert on no reply option, but that is fiddly.

All in all not very appealing. But I'm interested in what apple have up their sleeve!

I am sure they will go to eSIM - there is no reason that they can't now.

https://www.engadget.com/2017/06/19/its-esim-time/

And yes the watch and the phone would be on the same number... Could even have some location based mode tricks... if the phone is stationary but the watch is 3 miles away on a cycle ride, ring the watch but leave the phone silent.

Price you kinda hope the carrier would make it easy and cheap... but they are all money grabbing Scrooge McDuck types.

No I'm saying nothing of the sort. Those are your words.

You said: "Seriously, those who want LTE connectivity will pay for the service."

And just how many people do you potentially think would pay for that type a service?

No I'm saying nothing of the sort. Those are your words. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say.
This here: "miniaturize hardware enough to fit an LTE radio". What does that mean? You don't have to miniaturize hardware to make an LTE radio fit. If anything it would be the opposite, miniaturize the LTE radio.

it means making room to support LTE. Apple can't shrink the LTE radio/chip since Apple doesn't design the LTE chips. They buy them from Qualcomm/Intel/or potentially Samsung. So they can only shrink the things that they have control on, like the materials they use on the case, which battery they use, make a non-removable Apple SIM card (or a virtual SIM), the processor design, shrinking the taptic engine module, etc...

Regardless, no I don't think Apple would be subsidizing customers cellular bill just to push LTE Apple watches. It's typically not their m.o. The closest I think they might get (I doubt it though) is subsidizing 3 month of service with an auto pay after 90 days.

Disagreed.
And that's not the only option. Like I said, they did a Tmobile deal with one of the iPad launches that offered a lifetime of 250mb/mo which would be plenty for a watch.

I just don't see that many people paying $5/month for cellular connection with the watch.

Hmm.. My girlfriend has her Gen1 Sports Watch (aka Series "0" by today's standard if I'm not mistaken?) and she wants a new one due to the battery being rather weak. The day's she does her workouts it won't last through the day, which is a problem and she also wants it in Rose Gold to match her iPhone 7 and iPad Pro. But considering the iPhone 8 or whatever it's going to be called won't be released in Rose Gold according to the rumours it doesn't look like she will be able to have all devices in the same colour regardless.

The series 2 is still costing the same as it did on release here in my country. It's not all that tempting paying full-price for a device that is reaching one year old and is rumoured to be replaced with a new series right around the corner.. Properly at about the same price point... But then again, who really knows? Suddenly its October and Apple has yet to announce a new watch and my girlfriend has to live with the flincky battery life for no reason.

Meh...No design change, pass. That's two Apple products I didn't have to purchase this year due to no design changes: The iMac and Apple Watch.

I was hoping they would come up with a solution where iPhone and Apple Watch share the same number for calls and text, otherwise one ends up with several numbers and people are never sure how to get in touch.

Looks like the vast majority of people here will avoid the Apple Watch until it is as good as, or exceeds the capabilities of the Gemini Man watch (including 10 hours invisibility)

It’s good though. Watch should not have too many features, otherwise they’ll face battery challenge. It won’t replace phone yet. Watch is just an extension to the phone. It can work on its own as a watch & some functions, or it can work with watch for broader functions

Will this be a bizzarre year, when Apple's iPhone has a thinner bezel than the watch?

So they don't have to insist on black backgrounds to try and hide how large the bezel on the watch screen is.

Third party watch faces would be nice, but I don’t think battery life is why they don’t exist.

In my opinion, they don't allow developers to create custom faces because it would be too easy. If it's too easy, there would be a ridiculous dump of them into the "Watch face Store". Just look how saturated the current App Store is and consider how much more difficult and time consuming it is to create a full app; even the rubbish ones that look half-baked take considerable time. A watch face would likely be doable for those with almost zero coding experience. Then there's the resources to approve/reject each of these faces.

What they need to do instead is create an app on the iPhone that allows you far more flexibility to design your own faces. Change fonts, font sizes, circle circumferences, thicknesses, add custom images, reposition elements in absolute space, etc.

So many wanting a slimmer design. In a few years I'm sure you'll all be complaining about wanting a thicker watch with better battery life.

I agree - this isn't a fully standalone, data heavy device like an LTE iPad. It's an incremental device tied to a phone. I don't think they can justify charging extra per month for data

they should make the apple watch screen bigger by removing the bezels, they are huge for god sake!

Those seem like issues specific to you and not general users. I’m not convinced. I think battery life is adequate.
Obviously,
Third party watch faces would be nice, but I don’t think battery life is why they don’t exist. Why do you need the face to be on 24/7? You’re not looking at your Watch every second are you, so what’s the benefit? The face lights up right as I raise it to look at it and turns off when I’m no longer looking. Frankly it would annoy me if it never turned off. It would draw too much attention, amongst other annoyances.
Sure, wax

It would also look like a real Watch.
