I still wonder when/if we will ever have the ability to update the Apple Watch through iTunes instead of through iOS interface.
You have Apple Pay on both iPhone as well as Apple Watch - because of that, you have greater security enforced (e.g. you have to have a PIN enabled on each device). There's also the secure enclave in the iPhone.
If we see similar measures put in place with the new Mac's that support Apple Pay, we may see the capability to do this with the watch over wifi - but you'll have to have auto locking and a password enabled. No auto-login enabled. It would need to be so to ensure security.

What would the advantage be?

The quotes you mentioned talked about Bluetooth being slow; don't the watch and phone need to be connected to wifi to do an OS update on the watch? Bluetooth shouldn't be a factor.

In the regard of downloading the Apple Watch WatchOS software updates. Currently, isn't it downloaded to the iPhone then pushed to the Apple Watch via Bluetooth? Like the iPhone, I would like the ability to plug my Apple Watch into my Mac computer and be able to download/install the software update from iTunes. Maybe that would speed up the software update process.

As far as I understood, OS is pushed to Watch via wifi and not via BT
That said, when I moved from 3.0 to 3.1 the slow part of the upgrade has been the installation of the OS and not the download / transfer iPhone=>Watch

My series 0 is on 3.1 now and off the charger for about 5 hours now, already at 71% and really haven't been getting many updates besides activity and ESPN.

Seems odd.
Hmmm.. I have the ESPN app also. Wonder if that's the culprit. May turn off notifications on that for the Watch (or do I need to remove it altogether to get a benefit?).

I had the same app and removed since it wasn't a third party app updated to O/S 3 and refreshing may have been the problem.

I don't think ESPN ever thinks about the Apple Watch.

Has the Workout app always started the heart-rate sensor on the first screen? I'm sure it used to wait until you'd actually selected and started a workout.

I've read here that the ESPN app is a battery drain and hasn't been optimized for watchOS 3. I use TeamStream for sports updates on the watch even though I'd prefer ESPN to update theirs.

Same here, I wonder what happened. The watch update is still downloading for me though. I don't know now whether I should install the update.

I saw 3.1.1 beta and deleted the beta profile from Apple Watch. Now it's gone from the developer site. Maybe some sort of issues with all the betas. Might be wise to hold off until Apple re-releases 3.1.1 beta

Looks like 3.1.1 is back up on Apple developer site. Going to install shortly. :)

The ability to scroll down using the Digital Crown is removed from control centre on gen 1 Watch. Everything is now on one screen. Apart from that there are no noticeable differences where I can see. Can't comment on battery life until tomorrow or next day. Seems normal so far i.e. No major battery drain as some betas can do.

Thanks! Anyone else with impressions? Given the minor release status of this update, I wouldn't expect much, but some tweaks (as indicated).

I updated my phone to 10.2 and now cant see contacts on my watch (e.g. when i get sms, there is a number, not a name). I am having 3.1 on my watch. Any similar problems?

how? smaller buttons or something removed?

It seems like the Dark Grey color for Chronograph is new in 3.1.1? Or was it there since 3.x?

Probably new in 3.0 that I'm noticing now: turning on/off the prominent haptic option now plays a preview.

I hope this fixes the reboots. Just got a SS watch 2 with 3.1 and it has rebooted twice in the 4 days I've had it.

Might want to restore to factory and re-pair. That doesn't sound like it's from 3.1. 3.1 is fairly stable at least on my brother's Watch 2.
