I've worn it.

Fair enough, then.

I think it's clear that personal preference is going to play into smartwatches a lot, even more so than phones, because most people I've talked to either gush about the Moto360 and hate the Apple watch, or vice versa.

I'm 80% sure I won't be buying an Apple Watch, but every time I see the stainless with the Milanese strap, that number gets squishier. I think that look is stunning.

Yes, that Milanese strap is clearly the best looking part of the watch stuff (though gold combined with some of the leather straps looks classy as well but gold and leather often looks good, but I don't think I would ever pay for a solid gold watch and certainly not a gold Apple watch).

To be fair, I think Apple is engaged in a bit of puffery about the metallurgy. Most 18kt gold is twice as hard as 24kt gold. I don't doubt that they consulted with metallurgists about the proper alloys, but I don't think they exactly invented

I am also sceptical about that claim as long as we don't know what gold alloy they use as the baseline. They do work with Liquidmetal (the leading company for amorphous metal alloys) and have an 'exclusive' license to use their technology in consumer electronics (though Swatch also has an 'exclusive' license, presumably for watches). An amorphous gold alloy could be significantly harder.

Give it a few years and then we'll talk again. Either it will be a great success or a complete failure.

Definitely, I agree with you there. For me personally, in actual photos it looks pretty sleek and the promo images are a discredit to it.

I have to say the exact opposite - this (except the screen) looks a lot like digital watches from the 80s in my eyes:

When I think about it: A watch face with grey 'lcd-numbers' (retro all the way) would be quite cool :)

Few here seem to get or know anything about the fashion industry. What Apple is doing is very smart. Giving first looks to the tastemakers of that world is how it is done. They already got a thumbs up from Anna Wintour. In the fashion world that is HUGE.

Apple Watch is the first Apple device to transcend the tech world. It will be sold at Barney's, Macy's, and myriad high end boutiques, as well as Best Buy. Tim Cook and team have been VERY well informed on how to navigate this new terrain.

Apple Watch Edition is meant for high end watch lovers. Entry for a good watch in that world starts at well over $5k. It is solid gold. Gold is expensive. I'm a musician and play on an instrument that's solid gold. Just the *crown* on my head joint (smaller than Apple Watch) costs $700 or more dollars. If the Edition is priced around $1500 I will be STUNNED.

Last, this is 2014 not 2024. Of course Apple Watch needs an iPhone to offer everything it does (which is a lot). You're only able to get a battery so large into a watch. If it lasts a day that is great! Cellular, gps (combined with all the other features) are entirely unrealistic expectations for a device this small. How will you power it. Kinetic and solar won't work.

Very smart post. Thank you.

I think what will happen is that you will be in the line to get one, just like the rest of us :D

Well... about 10 years ago I was teaching at a multimedia school and one girl asked me if I knew anything about being a VJ. I turned my head around and said: this stupid kids... VJing? what a stupidity.

Until I went to a party and saw a guy doing visuals and I said to myself: I can do that an better. I ended up being the best VJ in my country for several years and I event went to the Ultra Music Festival 3 times. Never say never.

But I will cut my harms this time to prove you wrong, I am not wearing that crap.
