I have a thought on Apple Watch pricing that's not typical. I wonder if, to justify the development of the Watch itself, and to make any sort of blip on the screen as far as Apple Quarterly Sales go, the Watch is going to have to sell with more revenue across less quantities.

They know that Apple Watch isn't going to sell 50 million units per quarter. But, with all the development time and money invested...the Watch MUST make a financial ding on the bottom line...hence, $17,000 14K gold watches. If not volume, then a higher unit price must be maintained.

Just a thought.

Actually, if it helps strengthten the ecosystem, it is worth it even if it just broken even. Apple's added value is not just in the hardware, but in the ecosystem itself.

Alongside brushed metal and glass iPhones, MacBooks and leather and metal watches.

The point is, drop the plastic and rubber products, they're unnecessary and nothing more than a bean-counter money grab move.

I noticed in their promo video for how the watch enclosure is milled, they showed a serial number. So of course I had to check on apple.com/support. It looks like their telephone support has expired!;)
If anyone is wondering its FG7N6052FY2C

I'll admit I'm an Apple fan and I want to want this watch. At my job I am not allowed to be on my phone at all so getting notifications on my wrist would be nice, until they make a rule against smart watches. But other than that I'm having a hard time imagining a situation where I NEED this device.

In Australia the Gold version will sell for about $14K. When Apple release a new phone we buy a completely new device for each model.

For the Gold Watch what happens when the hardware is upgraded? Is it a trade in? Do they offer hardware upgrade to the owner's existing model? If Apple offers hardware upgrades to the Gold model then will they also do the same for cheaper models?

I don't see the attraction in spending $14K each time a new Apple Watch is released.

Are you considering spending $14K on one of these gold watches? If not why would you care what the people who do have that kind of money do when a new one is announced?

Again the only difference between them all is that Apple has an idea. Right now all smart watches have absolutely no use case.

Contactless payments is indeed a use case (which currently only the Apple Watch does). Is that alone worth the $349? Probably not.

Tim Cook has no backbone or he would have told Johnny " are you fricken stupid a watch ??
This is what happens when the hen house losses it's rooster !!
RIP STEVE !! Want to save Apple ? Fire Cook !! Hire Woz !!

I was with you up to the last sentence. Press coverage has been pretty fluffy neutral--but I think we saw today a major mistep by Tim Cook and Apple. Basically all is forgiven all long as your selling a 60 million phones a quarter--but I think I saw the seeds of brand degradation today--and millennial
techies are a fickle bunch. Expect apple to be heavily derided on american tv

Perception is everything though. If Apple would have advertised this as a hobby like the Apple TV then its success or failure wouldn't affect them too much. But that's not the case here, Apple is heavily promoting the Apple Watch as their next flagship product, they're expecting it to make an impact similar to the iPhone's or iPad's. If this product fails it will have serious repercussions at Apple.

I think I'd be nervous using it as my hotel room key. I'd be paranoid about the battery running low, so would be trying to avoid using the watch whilst out and about... In case I returned to the hotel and am unable to get back in my room! (Where the charger would be waiting...!)

Then you go to the front desk and ask for a key. Nothing traumatic. It's when you lock yourself out in your pajamas while pushing the room service tray out. THAT'S traumatic.

Everything about the Apple Watch is a huge mistake in my opinion, starting from the product itself and going all the way to the three versions and ridiculous pricing. I'm with you on the brand degradation part, today might be the day Apple died, they are no longer a tech company, they're a luxury one... if you take into account only the Apple Watch part. But then you see them introducing a really great macbook, introducing researchkit (wich was the most revolutionary thing they presented), you see them revolutionising mobile payments... it gives you hope, they obviously are still doing really great stuff! Maybe the Apple Watch will be just one mistake like Virtual Boy was for Nintendo or the PS3 was for Sony, I really hope so.

The smart watch simply has no real use compared to other devices. You can live comfortably without a smart watch. You can in fact live pretty good without even a watch.

Look at all the devices apple hasn't updated for a few years? one thing is in common with all of them. They don't sell a lot of them. Apple is not going to sell a lot of smart watches for the same reason apple doesn't sell a lot of mac pros.

You can live comfortably not getting a mac pro and getting an imac instead. Or a macbook pro. The mac mini isn't even a good seller if I recall.

Apple watch is no exception. Apple will update this product as new technology comes out but it's a watch right? What new tech could there possibly be? Battery. It'll be a couple years before apple can get a better battery.

Swap out all those "you"s with "I"s and your post would make sense. You can only speak for yourself. Otherwise, you are just fantasizing what it's like to be us.

This thing is so dumb. It's worthless without a phone in your pocket. Leaving Bluetooth on all day for communication will drain the iPhone battery even faster than it already does.

It also pairs with wifi so you are really only using bluetooth when you don't have a wifi signal.

Seriously, with the prices they announced today. Who gives a ****?

You're not the only one to complain about price but what do you think is a good price for a decent watch? Echo drive's typically run around $150-200 and I believe that's a pretty typical price for a nice quality non "niche" (rolex, Tag, ect) watch. SO if that's true... how much would you pay for an exercise band from another company? At least $100.... so we're sitting at $300 for a watch and exercise band. Is that too expensive?

So for another $50 you have your watch and exercise band and so much more..... Just saying.

Most non-smartwatches also last longer than 1-2 years. That's where I think a lot of the pricing complaints are coming from.

Sorry but did you actually pay attention to what you wrote? IF you can use your watch you'd be able to use your phone.... AND for the sake of argument you let both run down you can always go get a physical key... you will NEVER be locked out of your room if your tech isn't charged.

To be honest,I'm not impressed with the watch at all:

The pricing is insane.
It doesn't do anything that iPhone can't.
It needs an iPhone to work.
It's a watch that needs to be charged every night.
Oh and unlike any expensive watch,it will be completely outdated in 2 years time.

It's a very expensive accessory for iPhone, with very little life cycle.

on the positive note, the new Macbook is irresistible.

For the most part I agree. I don't wear watches, nor do I like watches. I was really hoping to see something that would make me start wearing a watch.

The main thing that I was interested in was for tracking my sleep. Since that isn't an option, looks like I'm going to have to wait another generation or two.

I'll definitely want to check it out in stores and see how it is nonetheless.

I have a feeling that developers (or Apple) will create an alternate home screen that is a list format either in words or icons. The little bubbles look like a headache, not to mention unaesthetic. I would love to have a background pic on my watch home screen!
