Here the base model is $499 AUD for the small one. But the kicker is the top model, we're talking new car money for one of those. Yes I know there are much more expensive watches in the world which people by but why such a price difference for a bit of gold when it doesn't do anything different and doesn't look any better?

Why is everyone obsessed with the price of the gold Apple watch? Non of us are actually going to buy the gold watch.

This watch had been a letdown for me. I'm sure it'll do great but I'm sure I'm not alone in the not impressed crowd.

I think Apple knows how to play this game now. When the iPad came out it was overpriced, didnt do enough and was pretty thick compared to what followed just one year later. It was also expensive so only people willing to throw that kind of money around could get it. But what happened a year later, this luxury item was then improved greatly and the software caught up with the hype and it became more affordable and now normal people could own what was once a luxury to own. And that in itself sold a few more of these. If I were a betting man I would say that the Watch 2 or 3 is going to be more affordable, thinner, and do way more than this watch ever will. And when it does catch up to the hype they will have another iPhone on their hands. Which if you recall has the same story the iPad did. Before that the iPod had the same story. All were high priced luxury items that turned into things everyone else ended up owning. The rich people who buy the first gen of Apples game changing devices end up turning into walking advertisements for those looking enviously from the sidelines. As soon as they start living up to their promises of what they can do (3rd party software catches up) and the price drops a bit and it gets thinner and lighter, they end up having another huge hit. They know how to play the game because they practically invented it.

The key for the watch really take off and just like the iPhone is apps. There are a lot of apps which require interaction of your iPhone. That becomes hard when you're on the go and outside moving around. All of that is about to change.

I have to admit it's a little more interesting than I expected. It has enough curiosity value they should include one free with every iPhone purchase, sort of like the visual equivalent of earbuds. I can't see actually paying money for one though.

Watch thoughts

I have a thought on Apple Watch pricing that's not typical. I wonder if, to justify the development of the Watch itself, and to make any sort of blip on the screen as far as Apple Quarterly Sales go, the Watch is going to have to sell with more revenue across less quantities.

They know that Apple Watch isn't going to sell 50 million units per quarter. But, with all the development time and money invested...the Watch MUST make a financial ding on the bottom line...hence, $17,000 14K gold watches. If not volume, then a higher unit price must be maintained.

Just a thought.

You misunderstand.

Usually when something gets invented or discovered it takes awhile to find a real use case for it.

Right now that thing you put on your wrist has no clear direction. It's a watch, a running/jogging tool, an exercise buddy, a watch that links to your phone, a watch that has personal medical ID on it, and a watch that helps you pay for things. I never said lacks direction. If I did I mistyped. I said it has no clear direction.

If I asked you what does a watch do can you answer that question with one sentence?

Phone - Used to communicate with people from a distance.
Computer - Used to process data into meaningful forms
Car - Used to travel at a distance
Watch - Used to tell time? Used to sync to your phone? Oh I Know - A watch is used as a jogging assistant. But I thought it was used to tell time. What's a watch?

Right now the idea of the watch paradigm is shifting before your very eyes. It's changing. A watch is no longer a watch. But what is it? Right now. No one knows but it's changing. Once the metamorphosis is completed that watch will be completely different and it will be required to live day to day. It won't be a watch anymore but it'll still be called a watch. Your grand kids will ask you why is it called a watch when it's used to monitor your health for example. You won't be able to answer it like you do now.

Why is your smart phone still called a phone? Clearly you can do a lot more with it than just "a system that converts acoustic vibrations to electrical signals in order to transmit sound, typically voices, over a distance using wire or radio."

And your point is? Not everyone wants or needs more. That doesn't mean others lack direction.

This is the thread where you need a downvote.

Mods, please promise you will not bite me if I gazillion multi-quote in a few months all the naysayers with their non-sense on this thread. This is like the iPhone and iPad the beginnings all over again. So very entertaining!

Yep that's part of it. No one has a need for a smart watch right now and there's no clear direction on where to take it. In 3-5 years I'm sure by then it'll be discovered. I'll buy one in 3-5 years. If I didn't need to save for a house I would definitely buy the Apple smart watch as my first one tho.

I just updated my phone. I was interested in the Apple Watch. Heard random price rumors. Now these horrible rumors are confirmed. Why did Apple price the average person out of the mid tier Apple Watch? Why is the "companion app" basically a showcase for the watch? Because Apple isn't 100% sold on these devices themselves. Now with this price, I will look elsewhere or not at all. I don't need a smart watch.

It is so freaking funny to listen to the first impressions from Engadget and theverge. It's like they start off with the quality feel of the watch and then bam; their hesitant to really talk bad about the user interface like their being monitored by Kim Jong Un at a dinner party with AK-47's being pointed at their heads.
People need to understand that the only way to make companies better is to criticize them for it. Just look at what Samsung has done with the Galaxy S6 Edge. It's from all the negative feedback that is making Samsung a better innovator. Websites are not doing Apple any favors by kissing their asses.
The entire approach to the Apple watch is all wrong. The more I see this watch in action the more complicated it has to be. It should not try to replicate the phone that you already have in your pockets; it should compliment it. Got to start simple and work your way up. Having a spinning crown, a button on the crown, a button below the crown, the touch screen, light touch and finally force touch is just way to many input options. Right there it tells me that the OS is confusing. Very un-Apple like.

Wonderfully said by both of you!

But he can easily get a replacement haha

Are you now forum cop? Serious note, are you just bored tonight? What are you adding to the conversation yourself besides snark?

Snark, nah, too bored for wit (so you were right); Just call my comment "Karma" (deserved? Who knows? I'm not a god ;-).

At least, I've learned to chill and ignore the usual litany of identical comments (again) about battery life. I usually take this forum way too seriously. Maybe I'll live longer.

It's probably because they're professionals. Most previews are based off of limited play time with a non-final product. Wait for the actual reviews - where they have had enough time with the product to form a more concrete opinion - for them to actually rip on it.

Can i reverse my dismay ? Thank u Mr. Cook :D

We all go off half-cocked at one stage or another over how useless this or that is, until a keynote/event flips our minds over on its heads.

I actually would buy this..... yes, the one day battery life can still tick me off as well as the need to take it off to charge. but answers calls on the watch, that is a useful thing.

Although, i'm also assuming u can also dial from the watch too then, this would be a really good feature...

The heath/tracking stuff, are all good...... While we not see a huge need of this "no doctor needed" stuff outside the U.S./Canada, its still good to have, coz u never know.... (We) may get it one day... Apple Pay is only natural. If its gonna be on a phone, it makes it "easier" on a watch, although the idea u now look like a goof having to hold your arm out against a device just to pay as a "convenient" measure, i dunno how well that would work. Or weather we'd just see users using their phones, as although they need to grab it out, you KNOW a device is there..

Much to the dismay to the shop-keep.... "What are u doing??" when u stick you arm out.

Meanwhile, the other Apple Watch
