Can't imagine leaving my phone at home even if the watch had LTE they just do different things. Similarities but barely.

I think the main benefit is when exercising...going on a run or a bike ride...having just the watch for both music and notifications/calls would be nice versus strapping an iPhone 7+ to your arm or bike.

Other than that...I kind of agree.

Apple taking over from Swatch by Summer 2019 as #1 watch manufacturer in the world, in terms of turnover.
Nice job apple, still love my Sport and silent, shush, iPhone.

Understand. One of the things I enjoy most about exercise is the time to unplug. Emergencies happen and for that I could see it but generally listen to music and be active for a bit is what allows me to be around technology the rest of the day. I should add that my phone is with me when I ride in my jersey pocket but I ignore notifications when I ride.

After 2 years, 99% of consumers are still scratching their heads and trying to figure out what they are good for.

It isn't that they are useless, but they don't add anything practical to most people's lives or productivity. They are profligate kitsch-novelty.
I bought one almost 2 years ago because I needed a replacement for a broken Nike Fuelband. The health stuff is really passive on Watch OS so I found myself not really using it much beyond taking some calls (and never missing one), Apple Pay, and telling the time. But my word how it grows on you. Recently I had mine in for repairs and it was a hell of a 6 day wait and really reminded me how useful it is.

I don't use my iPhone for games or watching videos, nothing like that, so if an Apple Watch came out that had full phone functionality I'd replace my phone with it.

I thought the same. I had no interest in the first generation Apple Watch. However, I decided to take a punt on the series 2 watch in January and I can't live without it. I have watches worth around £20,000 just sitting in a draw almost redundant as I don't wear them anymore. Apple Watch is one of those gadgets you don't realise how much you need & use it until you buy one. It's essential to me.

Apple watch may take off when it doesn't need a phone tethered. I'm still patiently waiting for a cellular modem to be included. Samsung has had this for years. Until then I have no interest in strapping additional weight onto my body. A watch with a cell modem lets me ELIMINATE WEIGHT from my body if I can ditch the phone.

Apple isn't going to create a watch that canibalizes sales of their most profitable device, the iPhone. That'll never happen.

The Apple Watch is a companion for the iPhone. If they hook people on the watch, they now have a much harder time moving away from the iPhone to Android because you have to have an iPhone to use the Apple Watch. They also compliment each other and work together, which is why they're able to create such a positive user experience and make for a compelling purchase.

It's slowly starting to actually become useful and I think recent aggressive discounts have helped sales. If the next version has cellular connectivity, a facetime camera(unlikely) or both then I'm in.

Every time apple releases something new everyone always says how it's going to flop and apple always proves them wrong.

New MacBook Pro
iPhone 7
iPad Pro
Apple Watch

And lo and behold they all sold like hotcakes. I wonder why so many supposedly apple fans on here want the company to fail so badly.

As an apple fan well done apple.

You missed AirPods

I don't run...but I do ride...I have a Rokform case on my 7+ and keep it mounted on my handle bars for my rides (typically almost 2 hours long). I actually prefer this even I could just have my watch. I use Strava and listen to my music through the phone so I don't have to wear headphones while I ride.

When I get messages, the watch will let me know and I can choose to stop and answer or just keep going. It also lets me do separate tracking through the Watch fitness app. Meh...works for me.

But if I was a runner?? Damn...would love a cellular watch with some nice fitness bluetooth in ear headphones.

Most people will never pay to have data plan for their watch and why would you, I never go anywhere without my phone.

The battery will last a full day. If you charge in the morning when you shower (or whenever that is) you will maintain battery throughout the day without much trouble.

People live in fantasy world where they think the watch should last three or more days and then complain it is too thick. What they don't seem to get is the watch is mini computer with good battery life. I can easy get a full day with my S2, charge it for an hour then sleep with it all night and top it off in the morning while I shower.

The Apple Watch is booming exactly because people have figured that out.

It's one of the most genuinely useful gadgets I've ever bought, Apple Pay alone is worth the entry ticket.

I think the case for a cellular watch isn't that you wouldn't need an iPhone at all--just that you wouldn't need to carry with you everywhere that people do now. It would be great to take a cellular Apple Watch to the beach, swim with it and leave my iPhone in the car or even at home that day.

I can see a use case for a reliable cellular Apple Watch. I could leave my iPhone at home or in the car when I'm biking, at the beach, at the pool and don't need it's full services. iPhones are getting big.

I'm still using the first generation watch every day and after two years the battery life is great..... It's been in the pool hundreds of times without a problem. I will definitely replace it with a new model when the time comes.

They should really post Garmin data. It's a closer rival than either fitbit or xioami and likely has larger revenue share than fitbit.

Same (except I don't have any 20k watches lying around hah). I think for most people that I know (even non-techies), the fitness aspect is what draws them in. Once they start using the watch, the notifications, reminders, and the upcoming Siri face is what turns/will turn it into something people can't live without.

Personally, I geek out every time my Apple Watch logs me into my computer :)

I use mine all day and when I put it on charge at night the battery has never been lower than around 87%.
Charging! OMG, I totally forgot about that hassle. Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Pencil, iPhone Smart Battery Case. If you buy all this stuff, you'll never stop charging.

I never thought I would want an Apple Watch but decided to give a Series 1 a try when they were on sale for $229.00. I have a Garmin I use for my biking and running and have found that the Apple Watch, as long as you have your phone with you is a great substitute as well as being pretty handy for looking a quick messages and answering the phone while it is stashed in my pack. I have been amazed with the battery life which has yet to be below 50% at the end of the day and some days no less the 70%. I would definitely buy one again.

Funny how every time a new report or statistic gets published most of the commenters get super defensive. Jeez, relax, nowhere in the article does it say that the Apple Watch isn't good.
