Tim talked about that $17k watch for like 10 seconds during this announcement... are you high?
Not at all. But Apple is - knowing that they are selling a high ticket product that will be obsolete in about five years.
Show of hands for anyone that is using their 3GS.

Sorry $200 to go from Aluminum to SST and Sapphire crystal display. I expected $100. SST doesn't cost that much more than Aluminum. I'm glad the iPhone 6 didn't get Sapphire crystal display. I would have been $1000 more at least.

People will drop $1k on a pair of diamond earrings without a second thought--why not a watch? These prices seem in line with the mid-range watch market. $17k for the top-of-the-line watch is in the same range as high end watches. Go on any site and check out plenty in the $10k-20k price range. Of course those might be still worth that much (or more) 20 years from now!

You just compared timeless diamonds that are one the most precious gems on Earth, with a tech gadget with a 3-5 year shelf life. Check your head.

Crazy

First, I don't wear watches and never have, so any device I'd strap on my wrist must have some overriding functionality that would make it über attractive.

Second, I love Apple and was really looking forward to this product - it actually seems like something I'd wear and enjoy.

Third, price is ridiculous. I would never consider paying more then $50 for a "normal" watch, and $200 as the absolute top limit for a "smart" watch like this.

I'm sure they'll sell like hotcakes, but not to me - one of the first Apple products that is a complete miss for me.

Will future Apple Watches fit 1st generation bands?

If that were the case, you could at least feel better knowing your pricey stainless steel band will last for a while, whereas the watch itself--like any electronic--will become obsolete within a few years. It would also make "refreshing" your watch more affordable.

17,000 for 18k gold? LOL. I could get a gold rolex submariner for 12k. 17k is hanging in AP royal oak territory.

I see this as something similar to the Leica ltd edition cameras. Something collectors will buy (Cook said available in ltd quantities) and just put in their safe without even breaking the seal on the box. Bit of a gamble at the moment, but could turn out to be an investment.

The ss price with a bracelet is laughable. That price can get you a vintage omega or even Rolex if you find the right deal.

These "watches" are really glorified Casio watches. No respectable person is going to be wearing these and expect to be taken seriously. Especially at that price.

Right, because people don't buy expensive things just to show off how much money they have. Like ever.

Yeah. But I also don't feel bad for the morons about to spend $1,000+ on a soon-to-be-obsoleted first gen model. Good luck with that.

I'm guessing the bands will be compatible for several generations. So a year or two from now, I can just purchase the version with the rubber strap, or maybe they'll sell the watch strapless next year, and I'll re-use the link band.

Apple International pricing policy

Hey guys, I do not know if this has come to your awareness, but Apple seems to have changed their pricing. It used to be that the Dollar prices of the Apple products remained the same, only thing that changed was the currency (e.g. 299$ -> 299€). Now they seem to have changed it radically: AppleTV: 69$ or 79€ – MacBook 1299$ or 1449€ – Apple Watch 399$ or 449€. Why?!

What do mean 5 years. I give it 1 year to 18 months tops before Apple Watch 2 comes out. It'll have more sensors, that they left out in this version. Worst case 6 months if they update it with the iPhone this year.

So Gruber was basically right....

His were quite higher for the apple watches. 1499 compared to 949 for silver link bracelet as well as all the others. For the editions he was too low such as 10K for modern buckle when actually 17k.

I couldn't agree more with Motawa! The prices for the bands are outrageous! I planned to get the Space Grey Sport :apple:Watch and get necer bands for the work day. After seeing these prices, I've some to realize iMac, Macbook Air, iPad Air and iPhone 6 are the only Apple products I'll have. So VERY sad! :(

Seems like a ripe market to be exploited by third party Apple Watch band makers.

Ludicrous! Best wishes to anyone dumping their money on this thing - I sure won't be.

I really want the Black Stainless, but $1100 is pushing it.

I may get entry-level stainless and later on add the non-black link bracelet.

Oh don't forget, they will want another $150 for Apple Care.

Now that I've had a few minutes to think about it here is how I break down the pricing tiers.

First, forget the Edition. That is not meant for the average person and let's be honest, it's a status symbol. So forget about the Edition. Nothing about that price is meant to be practical or "worth" it. When talking about the pricing this category really should be ignored.

The Sport is probably the category most people will find themselves in. We're talking about new technology that we aren't even sure we need or want. Of course the same was said of smart phones a few years back. How much are consumers going to want to spend on something they are unsure of? Time will tell. But I think at $350 people aren't going to lose their minds.

The Watch with the link bracelet is the one I like. At first I thought the price was crazy but then I got to thinking about it. At $949 for the 38mm model $449 of that is for the bracelet alone. Obviously leaving $500 for the watch itself. $500 for a stainless steel piece of really cool technology doesn't sound that outrageous. An iPhone, which we replace on yearly or bi-yearly cycles, costs $649 for a 16GB.

So what I take away from all this is to make sure you are considering that the bands/bracelets on some of these represent a significant portion of the price. And a steel bracelet doesn't need the latest software to run as intended and it doesn't have a battery that will eventually stop working. So as long as the bands will fit with any potential new model then that price can be a little easier to swallow. Plus there will be third-party bands popping up all over the place so those will be an alternative to the "expensive" ones that Apple is offering.

Holy cow, £859 for an Apple SS with a SS strap . And if i want a sport strap for the summer, thats another £39. £900 for a digital watch. Having said that, I spent £1,000 having my Rolex renovated.
Once i get over the shock, I will get what i want because if I go for a cheaper option i won't be happy

At these prices you'll file personal bankruptcy trying to keep your Apple Watch updated if you want anything more then aluminum!

This is one day I'm happy to have an Android phone and already have a nice smart watch (LG G Watch R) that I can actually afford to update.

Really...

Who cares about the prices of the Edition? They're probably not looking at selling millions of those anyway, but they need to offer it to get some credibility in the fashion accessory market.

Criticize the price all you want; if you've ever been to a Mid-East airport like Dubai, Qatar or similar, you know the type of person who will buy this. When the iPhone 6 had been out for a few days, I saw a guy *demanding* to buy 10 iPhone 6 Plus models, in Gold, with 128GB - only to hear that they didn't stock them yet. His multiple wives were not amused. Had a solid gold iPhone 6 existed, he would have bought that.

I for one do not see why I *have* to buy this. I've been burned too often by the first-generation game that Apple plays; the second gen will be way better, and probably come with all new bracelets again.

It truly is. You've really gotta have disposable income to fork over 10k for the apple watch.

That's correct... (like any person buy any high end watch). The thing is that the average techy is not the average fashionite. They want their watches to be very expensive so that when walking around they won't see other people with the same one often just like with luxury cars. Sport and Apple Watch follow the traditional pricing scheme of ending in 99 or 49 for the consumer who wants to spend less. Where is the Editions are 17,000 not 16,999 and 10,000k not 9,999 because those shoppers aren't looking for a deal.

You do realize that every single other manufacturer in this manufacturing segments charges that sort of price for that sort of steel bracelet right?

It costs other manufacturers making these sorts of bracelets at this quality level around $400 to make the parts alone.

If you can figure out a cheaper way to build the exact same thing there are hundreds of companies that would trip over themselves to pay you millions of dollars.

Lawl... I'm currently wearing a black-on-black, stainless steel Fossil watch that cost maybe $200 (I'm not sure -- it was a gift). Now I KNOW the stainless steel link bracelet did not cost them $400 to produce, because if so, they'd be out of business by now.

Yet Apple wants me to pay $500 for a comparable wristband? I just... can't...
