I grew up on a farm and this whole “cow pity” argument is misguided. My entire childhood was devoted to keeping these vile creatures in check, preventing them from escaping our gigantic Michigan barn at night, and keeping them from ripping through the electrified, 12-foot high, barbed-wire, double-row fences during the day. I would often suffer nightmares of them escaping…scenes of hearing them breathing just outside my window at night, pulling back the curtain to see their dead eyes staring at me, their wet noses smashing through the glass and seizing me, pulling me outside into the snow, making me do….unspeakable things. And we lost so many nameless ranch hands to cow violence, attacks, and mass mooings. We hired them in droves from outside closed auto factories a few hours south of the farm. I was told never to get attached to any of them.

So save your compassion for things that deserve it, and stop reading cow propaganda. There hasn’t been a cow eaten in this country for a hundred years that didn’t have the blood of innocent human beings smeared all over it’s inedible hooves. Just have a burger and sleep well at night. I still can’t.

Sad day for Apple Watch Hermès enthusiasts like myself if this turns out to true

I have a large number of leather bands that will probably go up in price as they become collector’s items?!
Very sad day. I think it is pathetic if Apple gets rid of their leather watch bands and cases. Let the customers chose what to buy. Don’t make the decision for them.

This drives me crazy - I’m a leather technician and if people understood leather is made from taking a byproduct (waste, if you like) of the meat industry, and reusing it as a sustainable, long lasting material. What do we think happens if we don’t use these hides for leather - they go to landfill 🤷‍♂️ I’m all for apple creating different bands/using different materials, but don’t tell me something synthetic, bound by acrylics, is going to be more sustainable and better for the environment. The move by apple for sure is to appear ‘greener’ to certain consumers, but in reality will come down to cost savings.

I see people commenting that they are all for saving animals - but animals typically used for leather (Bovine) are never killed for the hides - they are killed for the meat.

These animals will be slaughtered if apple makes leather bands or not.
There's some truth to what you say but it's not quite that simple: https://bitesizevegan.org/is-leather-a-byproduct-of-the-meat-industry/.

Surely part of the rationale for moving away from leather is to avoid the risk of offending customers in potentially huge new markets? And Apple has a history of artfully moving away from popular design features just before customers get bored with them (eg: reflections on iPhone app icons) (and they become ubiquitous in competing products). I doubt you’ll struggle to buy a leather iPhone case from a third party if you’re that desperate to look like you’re stuck in the Noughties ;o)

Customers in what market exactly are offended by leather?

As weird as it sounds, bovine leather has a positive effect on how cows are handled. You get less for a cowhide when there's scars, fat-wrinkles (from over-feeding) and brand marks so farmers have a financial incentive to be at least a little bit considerate.

I was pretty underwhelmed by Apples leather band quality and they didn't even offer them for the small watch. The 3rd party bands in the 30-50 dollar range have served me well, just go with one where the little loops are a bit wider and thicker because those are the first thing to go unless you got a fake leather one.

Leather production is incredibly bad in terms of pollution though.

Yeah, but they'd rather everyone eat bugs, instead of meat, eliminating the product and the by-product. You will comply.

Please let us leather fans alone. Why are there always some radical groups that want to force the decisions of others. Like there is only one right answer. I for example prefer eco friendly tanned leather that is disposable. I fully understand vegans and would never try to change their beliefs or would try to convince them to use natural products. Every vegan I know is like a preacher -.-

I keep reading from pseudo-news sites like MacRumors that these FineWoven cases will have a smaller carbon footprint than leather cases. What is the data behind that assertion? I’m not saying it isn’t true, but talking points like this just get regurgitated. Leather for things like this tend to come as a byproduct of the food market, no? We’re already killing the animal for food, might as well put as much of it to use as possible. I dunno, I’d just like some actual information, rather than empty platitudes.

"fresh sustainability" hahah people are nowadays are really dumb and fall into such fancy words, vegan leather right? As long as people eat meat what's wrong about leather products? Are we gonna bury all the hides for nothing? For some cases, leather is the best option and totally durable.

Exactly. If the animal is going to be killed anyway, why not respect the animal and utilize the entirety? Don't discard something that can be of use; Native Amercicans showed us the way ages ago. It's just like the elimination of plastic bags in retail; it makes you feel like an eco-warrior but in reality does more harm than good.

Future generations will be horrified that primitive humans used the skin of murdered beasts as a fashion accessory.

Nothing says 'dumb' and 'brainwashed' more than people who are horrified by fur - but cool with leather.

They're the exact same thing.
In what world do you think that these are the same thing? It is baffling. Before you start using the words ‘dumb’ & ‘brainwashed’, I strongly urge you to do some research.

No they don't. I'm a vegetarian and have been for years...grew up on a farm and personally butchered several animals myself (commonly chickens, pigs and ducks) and have shot and killed cows and horses more than a few times, with a (for the gun aficionados) Remington 870 12ga. I know what the industry entails.

I don't want anyone to "comply", nor does anyone else I know. I make my choices; you make yours. I don't use or buy leather, but you're welcome to..

Edit: I don't eat insects either, other than the ones I accidentally ingest from my garden veggies.
