Apple has already nixed the heart rate monitor so you can't do that while running.

Get your facts right before you troll.

Apple very much boasts of the Apple Watch's heart rate monitor right on the official Apple Watch web page HERE

But for the lazy here is the text verbatim:

With a custom heart rate sensor, it’s built to know you better.
The wrist is a convenient area for collecting data about your physical activity, a task Apple Watch is designed to perform throughout the day. On the back of the case, a ceramic cover with sapphire lenses1 protects a specially designed sensor that uses infrared and visible-light LEDs and photodiodes to detect your heart rate. Apple Watch uses this sensor, along with an accelerometer and the GPS and Wi‑Fi in your iPhone, to measure all kinds of physical movement, from simply standing up to actively working out. This allows Apple Watch to provide a comprehensive picture of your daily activity, suggest customized goals, and reward you for reaching personal fitness milestones.

You don't really need a GPS for running. You running in a strange place? You got lost? Nah. But without the phone, the watch will track your heart rate, the distance you ran, the calories burned, and so on. It will even play music loaded on your watch while you run, without the phone (through bluetooth headphones). Not bad.

Sounds accurate. Looks like Garmin beat Apple to the punch years ago...

What makes you think gps is required to track movement?

Accuracy?

We should all just put this person on our ignore lists as not one of his posts has contributed anything constructive. You don't need to be positively minded about all things Apple, but at least be accurate and don't spread nonsense.

Why is that ignore function so hidden nowadays on this forum? We should be able to choose this option right from the nickname drop down.

Get both when they are available at the Apple Store. I believe Candice is considered an Apple Model or iModel #
She really is now. But seriously, I could see Angela hiring her as the poster girl for the watch to put up in Apple stores and on the watch's official page on the Apple website. Angela is a smart cookie when it comes to her executive role of retail and marketing; and that would definitely be a smart move.

A lot of weird misinformation here.

Yes, there is definitely a heart rate monitor in the watch.

No, you don't have to have your iphone with you at all times. Fitness and music playing work independently. Apple watch needs the iphone for internet connection. It also needs it for third party apps to run, but that will become less of a hard rule in future SDK releases with more watch-only "offline" functionality available to third party devs.

you are kidding right? Apple's advertising budget is peanuts in comparison with Samsung or any other tech giant.

Product placement in films is never paid by Apple (or so they claim), there are also never official partners or sponsorships.

Yes under Tim there is more advertising, but still not much in comparison with others.

Even if product placement isn't paid by Apple, it's advertisement for Apple. If they don't pay for it, then it puts the whole comparing the budgets thing into question.

The wait is killing me!

You're already dead

The iPhone does NOT have to be on a person's body - the watch does NOT require an iPhone either. Just not all the features work without an iPhone, but many features DO work - like the time, playing music, tracking activities, stopwatch.

Plus, when working out in somewhere like a gym, you can leave the phone in a locker / gym bag within bluetooth range.

Yes, the watch will be functional without the phone. Whether or not that's to a suitable degree is up to the user. However, your second point is just silly. I guess I'll just have to make sure I join a gym where all the lockers are only 30 feet away from everything.

The watch is very noticeable in this picture and it's largely to do with what's on the face. A normal watch doesn't look like that.

And neither will the Apple Watch in real life. The face is going to be blank 99% of the time.

The build quality is different (and specifically made as a watch), the watch does more off the bat (and when third party run on it in the second part of the year, it will do even more) and you're still not forced to buy it. Not sure what else to say but that. The smaller watch is 1/3 smaller than the Ipod nano (non beefed edition).

The pricing is completely in line with all previous Apple pricing (though, their margins here is probably 50-55% rather than 40%.

1/3 smaller than this would be impressive. lets be honest, i have no self control and will probably sell my kidney to buy the Apple Watch regardless of how overpriced i think it is. and thats what apple is probably assuming as well.

Beats influenced? When the watch was developed BEFORE the buy?

BTW, current Beats are well reviewed. So, your argument is pretty flawed.

So, you prefer a watch so unfashionable and clunky nobody but tinkerers will use it? Just like 1970s computers. Is that the way to remain "pure",

Well reviewed? ahahahahah

Or you can buy an ampy and keep the iphone going all day endlessly while doing something else that doesn't require iphone at all for the watch. Enjoy.

Did you actually look at the sizes on Apple's site (in mm) The big Ipod nano is just about the same volume as the big Apple watch. The nano is thinner. That's 1/3 smaller volume BTW, not surface.

Wow, I don't know why I didn't expect coverage like this. I'm impressed. Candice Swanepoel, first of all, is hot as h*ll and she has been my favorite Victoria's Secret Angel for a long time. Apple is making the right moves, likely thanks to the ex-CEO of Burberry. If I were an active woman, I'd definitely want an Apple Watch after seeing Candice wear one. Hell, I am an active MAN and I definitely want one after seeing Candice wear one.

I'm so used to sarcasm that I'm starting to doubt myself - is everyone up voting this doing so for the same reason?

Well reviewed? ahahahahah

The reviews that I found did sound really favourable in general, in the 4/5 stars/80%ish range ratings. Which reviews is your "ahahahahah" based on?

Disclaimer: Before the pathetic "they must be good now"-BS starts - I'm just referring to the review summaries that I found online.

truth hurts, huh? unless you have some need to see your route, you dont need GPS for activity tracking. most other trackers on the market dont have it either, likely for the same reason. and unless youre a professional athlete i dont know that any precision gains utilizing GPS in additional to the pedometer & accelerometer really matter to anyone. other than complainers, of course. plenty of those here!

Why is she punching herself in the appendix? :(

ahh, wait. Apple Watch can gently inform you when your appendix has been compromised. :apple:

Why the snark?

Jakexb corrected some persistent misunformation in the thread without insulting anyone - - that should be commended.

Apple has already nixed the heart rate monitor so you can't do that while running.

As you've probably figured out by now, you read an article that said Apple dropped the idea of an EKG based heart beat monitor.

However, the regular optical pulse monitor is still there.

you are kidding right? Apple's advertising budget is peanuts in comparison with Samsung or any other tech giant.

Depends on the product. Samsung sells a lot of different things.

For years Apple spent more in the US advertising iPhones, than Samsung spent advertising their smartphones. It wasn't until 2012 that Samsung made their big US ad push that made Galaxy a name.

I think Apple took the lead again in 2014, but I need to find time to confirm.

This a prerelease product placement. Its likely some reciprocal ad sales were involved

Exaxtly. This isn't news, it's sales.
I'm sure Apple gave the magazine early access to people/products in return for very favorable media coverage. Apple does this all the time. Did money trade hands? Who knows.

Meanwhile, in the real world, mainstream media has a collective yawn about these watches. No one cares outside of this fanboy tent.

YOU may not need it but to tell others they don't...
