Apple Watch Now Supports Standalone Spotify Streaming

Awesome! Been waiting for this feature to get added - way too much of a Spotify fan to consider switching to Apple Music

now please add offline music on the watch
Yeah, this.
If you don't have a cellular Watch the streaming is only useful in a few scenario, like you're at the gym, the phone is in a locker and you stream via the gym's WiFi, but if you exercise outdoors offline music would be much better and would even save battery life on the Watch

and specifically for us Europeans - once you are in a different country, there is no way to use mobile data as Apple still does not support roaming for the Watch

This is great news... I had to get Apple Music so I could run with music. I got it for free with Verizon shortly after I got the subscription, but I still prefer Spotify. I just cancelled my Amazon music subscription because they have zero support for the watch and the HD plan wasn't worth it on most of my devices (quality not detectable on average gear - certainly not BT headphones while running).

Now for SiriusXM and I would be one happy camper.

Reading the comments, I'm still glad I haven't bought Apple Watch, because the only reason was to download my Spotify playlist and listen to it without iPhone when traveling. Guess that still hasn't happened.. keep on waiting until it does.

The decisions on the AW have always been a bit weird... there's good reason why most apps for the AW are not working well or are extremely limited in their function (beyond the physical restrictions of the AW).

Apple prevented a lot of things on the watch... until now it's not intended as a standalone device but as an annex to the iPhone. In that scenario there's only very little reason to have offline storage directly on the watch.

AW should be a standalone device... with all its consequences.

Do you mind posting a screenshot?
Amazon music and Pandora are supported by homepod beta not Spotify sorry I misread

About a week ago I was considering a switch to Apple music because there was still no streaming for AW. Safed by the bell, Spotify ;)

Apple prevented Spotify from implementing it for the longest time. It's part of the antitrust case in Europe against Apple.
This was lifted years ago.

Again another music streaming company "Pandora has been able to do offline music on Apple Watch for quiet a while" - this means is solely rests on Spotify being lazy in implementing this feature or quite simply they had other concerns for their resources to focus on: Podcasts and paying Joe Rogan millions ;)

Not implementing streaming and offline saving of playlists on Apple Watch, combined with their snooping if all my family members live in the same house brought me to switching to Apple Music. Never looked back since then.

For a company that complains so loudly about Apple‘s restrictions, Spotify does a very good job putting off paying customers with lazy development and questionable business practices.

If you created playlist folders, they won't show up on the watch when streaming away from your phone. Ape music currently has this option.

Spotify has started rolling out support for standalone streaming through the Spotify app for Apple Watch. With the new feature, Spotify users can listen to music or podcasts from Spotify over WiFi or cellular without having to have an iPhone nearby.

There has been a Spotify Apple Watch app available for the past few years, but the standalone streaming option is new. Spotify has been testing the feature for a few months, and prior to now, listening to Spotify required an iPhone even on Apple Watch models with standalone cellular connections.

Spotify Music can be streamed directly from the Apple Watch to Bluetooth headphones, which is ideal in situations where the iPhone isn't needed such as exercising.

The feature continues to be available in a beta capacity and is not available for all users at this time, but Spotify has confirmed that it is "rolling out" as of today. German site Macerkopf.de first spotted the change, which was confirmed by TechCrunch.

"We're focused on developing experiences that enable users to listen to Spotify wherever and whenever they want - regardless of the device or platform. After an initial testing period, we are now rolling out streaming capabilities for Spotify on the Apple Watch," a spokesperson told TechCrunch.
It may take some time for the new standalone streaming option to be available to all Apple Watch owners. The Spotify app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Took them FOREVER to finally add a Watch app in the first place. I don't use my watch without my phone nearby, so it has never been a problem, but it was a nice surprise when I noticed the beta feature a few months ago. It's nice they are finally rolling it out to everyone else that would find it more useful than I do. Now, if they could just make it so you can queue songs from the watch, I would be completely satisfied with the watch app at that point.

Horrible, I tried it and I switched back to Apple Music. Bad trying to load anything on my Apple Watch 4. Won’t detect my Earbuds nor will it load my playlists.
