Perhaps there is a good reason Series 0 is not included, but I must say our family members are disappointed.

Our plan was to wear our LTE watches during the day and wear our Series 0 as a nighttime bed watch for the monitoring function. We don’t really care if it uses significantly more battery because we only wear it for ca 8h as we sleep.

Weirdly, this is one of the "killer" apps that might make me get an Apple Watch.

Some family members were recently diagnosed with heart arrhythmias, so it's something that's been on my mind lately. It'll be interesting to see how accurate it is. If it's accurate enough, should it also be possible/advisable to call emergency services in the event of a serious cardiac event?

I can almost guarantee that companies other than Apple making activity bands are looking to do something similar to this research. And remember that this appears to be research, not a medical service per se. The Apple Watch is probably not yet ready to be a medical diagnostic device. No doubt the FDA will have something to say about that in the future.

Also, I am not sure that I'd want a machine calling an ambulance for me, but it could alert the wearer that something is wrong and send information to a medical professional at a call centre who could give advice as to whether the wearer should consider getting help.

Interestingly, I bought an Apple Watch the other and noticed on the box it said “Apple Watch is not a health device”. What are the qualifications for being labeled as such?

Original Apple Watch not supported... bit of a disappointment.. Wish I had the extra cash to throw at a new one, but there is also nothing wrong with the one I have... hooray forced upgrades...

series 1 or newer. nice!! I guess the original Apple Watch - merely 2.5 yrs old by now is already considered obsolete at Apple HQ.

a) isn't the heart rate sensor between original apple watch and series 1 identical?

Apparently not. Don't you think the study would attempt to include every available participant they could?

I'd consider getting an Apple Watch and doing these research apps if the Watch had multi-day battery life. I have a Fitbit Surge that lasts a whole week, does sleep tracking, etc. Once the Apple Watch can do that (even if it's only for 4-5 days), I might get one.

This is great. I had/have WPW and had an ablation many years ago to "fix" the issue but I still get the occasional flutter. I was using the increased heart rate notification system for a while but I was getting ten+ per night and it was becoming a hassle clearing all of them out. It'll be interesting to see what sort of data comes out of this. My wife is constantly concerned about my heart so maybe she'll be able to get some peace of mind.

Do you shower daily? Put it on the charger then. My Series 3 is usually around 70% after a full day and I put it on the charger for about half hour before I sleep and it's back up to 100%.

IKR. Series one isn’t the same as first gen. Ughh can they get some sort of naming convention that makes sense for there products.
very annoying! Agreed!

First generation, 7000 series! They obviously had something else planned then went with Series 1, 2, 3.

This is great I just downloaded and participated. I think the Apple watch is worth the money for this feature alone. As a paramedic I’ve seen so many cardiac related emergencies and usually when you have to go to hospital damage has been done. Once heart tissue is damaged, it won’t repair itself like other organs. Good job Apple!

Are we sure "Series 0" is not supported? Does Apple even recognize this as a product description?

Someone needs to try to install this on their original Apple Watch and find out.

Was literally headed to the App Store before I even finished the article and then saw the Series 1 requirement. This is a really cool application of Apple Watch technology, but as usual early adopters get left out. That kind of goes with the territory though. Hey, at least I didn't buy one of those $10,000 watches!

7000 Series is in reference to the 7000 Series aluminum.

I'm a believer - I've tracked my heart rate since the first first watch and noticed an irregular resting heart rate about 8 months later and tracked it for a while. As it turns out, I had a swollen thyroid due to a hiatal hernia which caused some reflux. All is good now thanks to Apple Watch and an acid reducer every 4 days or so. :) Thanks Apple!
I've been wearing my watch while sleeping and charge in the afternoon since it arrived on the market and as for me, this is the best way to track resting heart rate - while sleeping.

Anyone in NY able to join? Asked me for my state then DOB and said they will let me know when I can enter the program.

Yes, we are sure.

My series 1 isn't very reliable when reporting heart rate, especially during workouts.
I don't know if it is an issue with my unit or if it's the way I wear it, maybe sometimes it is too loose, I don't know... I have the impression that is reporting random values sometimes. It is US only so I can't download the app...
Maybe for you but not for me

I'm from NJ, and I just signed up. Confirmed my DOB and state, and it said it will let me know when I can enter the program as well. Probably as designed, they will have people sign up and then slowly release the program.

The S0 doesn’t have the dual-core process for constantly check your heart rate throughout the day.

This is really no different than the new heart rate features with watchOS 4.0.

This alliance with Biotelemetry (BEAT) will be huge and it will end very successfully. I'm well researched on the company, and they are #1 when it comes to state of the art, wireless, cardiac monitoring.
