If you don’t use a case don’t lie to yourself, the rounded edge iPhones were way more comfortable in your hand. I suspect the flat edge watch would be another step in the wrong directions
The rounded edge phones might have been a little more comfortable in your hand… until they slipped out and hit the ground. The flat sided phones are not uncomfortable and are much easier to grip.

Totally depends on usage.

I’ve had every watch except the 5, and even disabling background refresh and AOD and setting brightness to low, I definitely cannot get more than 24 hr ever.

I have only ever had the GPS model and I track my exercise with an average of 15 minutes daily.

I have to speed charge my watch at bed time with the new Apple fast charger and sometimes fall asleep before it’s topped off and ready to track my sleep.

Point being, the battery life is not adequate at all for me since the series 6 and I’m not a “power user” by any stretch.
I don’t know why you are getting such low battery range. I have owned an S4 and an S7 (both GPS only) and both tend to get around 30 hours of battery life even when I use the GPS for a 30-minute run each day. I do have most notifications turned off. I do sleep tracking and at night I hit the “theatre mode” button mainly because I don’t want the screen to light up as a move around in bed. I charge during my first call of the day. Most mornings I have around 30% of charge remaining when I get up. By the time I upgraded the S4, it was getting down to around 25% in the morning. I do keep my phone with me when I do runs so the watch is not searching and running on its own.

The Apple Watch is ugly, a square box. A box with a tiny battery. Its accurate, its software is great, when I walk the streets of NYC it looks as if 100's people are in a black-box club, with no character. The Withings ScanWatch has 30 days battery life, yes it does far less, its step counter is usually 1200 steps below my iPhone13Pro but does SPO2, ECG, BPM and sleep tracking. Its AFib warning is pathetic, but it has 30 days of battery life and is beautiful.

So either buy something that doesn’t do as much, isn’t as accurate, but nevertheless looks great.
Or buy something that ’is ugly’ but does a lot and works great.

It sounds like a compromise either way.

This will be a nice watch. Will people stay on an annual upgrade cycle with them?

Annual upgrades is unnecessary for most people, given how reliable Apple hardware is. I'm waiting for the new Series 8 Apple Watch only because my Series 4 died after a swim in the river. Infinite boot loop. So the 4 lasted me... 4 years?

Bear in mind that speed-charging batteries actually lessens their life. Trickle charging is always better for a battery.

There are a few things wrong with this statement:
  1. You should never trickle charge lithium batteries:
”It is important to note that trickle charging is not acceptable for lithium batteries”
    https://www.powerstream.com/li.htm
  2. The “fast charge” rate offered for the Apple Watch Series 7, is only ~1C, which is a decently conservative rate for lithium batteries:
”The safest way to charge a lipo battery and the one that puts the least amount of strain on your battery is to charge at a rate of "1C" or 1 times capacity.”
  3. If you meant slow charging, maybe, over 5 years, you might notice some difference, but then you’ve cheated yourself of the utility of the device you’ve been charging because you slow charged it for 1/8th of the day, when it was supposed to be providing the many functions that you purchased it for.

Everyone who is saying 44mm is a bigger watch. People said the exact same thing about iPhone Pro Max models. “The screen is too big” In the end, the majority of the people became fans of the Pro models. It’s going to be the same with the Apple Watch. Let’s see what Apple has to offer 🗣
I'm the opposite. The bigger the better with AW so I don't have to keep dragging my 13 Mini around everywhere.

It is only a matter of time before we cross that bridge. I’m honestly surprised they went this long without releasing a form factor that ushered in a whole new band system. It’s what they do. And just likely any standard they changed in the past, people will initially gripe, then get over it, then proclaim it the best idea ever and we’ll be off into the next phase of - in this case - watch bands. The world spins. Apple makes money.
Yikes

Well I guess that's how Apple fans view things

Kind of interesting if this ends up paralleling the iPhone's history that well. With the launch of the iPhone 8, Apple also released the iPhone X which was a higher-end peak at the future of the iPhone lineup. Looks like they're going to do the same exact thing with the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch X / Pro / whatever it's called.

Well, given Garmin takes the lion share of profit in premium fitness watches, I guess that's where Apple have set their sights.

Not sure they quite understand that market yet though where battery life is already >1 week for Garmin's 47mm OLED "Epic 2". The 51mm Fenix 7 has 213hr max battery with GPS which extends to 578hrs with 3hrs of sunlight per day.

Yeah,I hate those

I love it!! I'm actually ordering one from Amazon. I will tell people this is Apple's new Watch. LOL

Well there were technological reasons to go from, say, the 30-pin connector to Lightning; that was progress. What progress is there to make with the watch band connecting system? It was quite innovative, actually, when it first came out, making changing the strap of the Watch much easier and faster than that of „regular“ watches. So it‘s basically perfect already. Size would be the only reason to add another tier, but I assume that tier would still have the same connecting system. And we‘ll always have the sizes we have now, too, because not everyone has giant wrists. So while „not ever“ is a very long time, I actually do think the old straps will not ever become incompatible with new Watches.

I think I'm more curious if the re design makes its way to the lower models in the following years. If a 45mm aluminum already runs ~$800 I am guessing this pushes $1000. Can't do it 😢

Except Garmin software is horribly unreliable. Read the Garmin forums for all the complaints about the software.
I've had every model Garmin Fenix including many of the special editions. I am also beta tester for their software.

My experience here is that "support" forums are great places to find people who apparently have problems. Those that are happy, don't tend to post about it so it sorta become an echo chamber. My experience also shows, that many of the issues people are having are user error, not software, or user expectation much greater than the technology currently allows such as:

"How come my GPS tracks are so far off course - I didn't pay $1,000 plus for this performance?". When we dig into their use case it's running through canyons with overhangs and significant tree coverage yet still a) actually gives a track and b) it's less than 10m off actual.

"How come the pulse oximetry doesn't match my medical pulse oximeter - I don't pay $1,000 for performance worse than a $100 chemist device?". a) It's not a medical device, b) it's not certified, c) wrist pulse oximetry is much harder to pull off than finger tip pulse oximetry and d) pulse oximetry on the watch is for altitude acclimation and sleeping (where you're not moving), not running pulse oximetry.

Granted, there are still some issues which are generally fixed very quickly.

$999 or so might seem a lot for a smartwatch, but actually that would make it just as expensive as an Apple display stand.
Good point. Apple should start selling all kinds of office furniture.

Apple chair, only $4,999.99. Polishing cloth extra. I bet it would sell like hotcakes.

I think this is a stupid idea. People are willing to spend $800-$1000 on an Apple Watch? You have had the same design/chip for years now, just update the normal watch already. I've been in the market for a new Apple Watch for probably 3 years now and they can't seem to bring out anything worthwhile.

Also, 47mm? Please, please consult your partner or better yet a stylist before purchasing it and beclowning yourself. 47mm is far too big for most peoples wrists and a lot of people are very self unaware.
“Most people” won’t be buying it. Of all the people in the world, very few percentage wise will ever own an Apple Watch Pro.

I don‘t know if this is supposed to be a joke but if the „Pro“ will actually be a 47 mm Watch, it will be exactly 2 mm bigger. The size Apple quotes is the length of the Watch body, not the screen size.
I thought it was screen size not the entire face. My bad. Mainly because every other device is measured by screen size. Learned something.
