I have a feeling even with all that you’re still going to get the Watch Pro.
Ha, without knowing me, you know me well. I’ll be tempted, but the likelihood is slim at best right now. I lived with, literally, my Seiko Automatic on my wrist 24/7 for 15+ years. I switched to the series 5 Watch when it launched mainly to help track my fitness/health, so I put up with the daily charging, lighter weight, rectangular and less than masculine form. The Epix 2 provides the same health and fitness tracking, with a greater than 2 weeks of use between charges, and the only thing it is missing is cellular connectivity, which I’m ok with.

I felt that my 44m Watch was too small so 47mm sounds nice. The flatter the watch the better too!

Now if only Apple would improve the OS itself. It isn't terrible but there are still too many inconsistencies between WatchOS and iOS.

Yeah, just look at how that backfired when they introduced the iPad Pro and iPhone Pro.
Understand your point, but people are more willing to spend £1000 a year (or every 2 years) upgrading their phones as opposed to their watches. iPhones also hold resell value much better than watches - so that affects upgraders too.
My point is the Apple Watch is a device that gives amazing health monitoring benefits to all that wear it. Previously the premium for the finish was a matter of taste, but everyone enjoyed the same benefits. If new sensors etc are only going to be reserved for a £1000 pro model then yes, I can see this potentially damaging this product.

You also mention iPad Pro. Great example. Most people see no benefit to the iPad Pro unless their workflow demands it. The best selling iPad models have always been the standard and Air and people aren't willing to update their regular iPads every year / two years let alone a pro.

Exactly.

This is just going to be another big seller for Apple. Already looking forward to buying mine.
Of course it will sell. It will infact initially sell out as the enthusiasts will buy anything new. But when the dust settles, if Apple start to introduce new sensors etc only for the Pro Model, leaving the standard exactly the same with very minor incremental updates - it will indeed damage the reputation of the product line.

I actually think this is risky territory for Apple. Introducing a pro line for the watch and going down the iPhone pro route of reserving any new features for the pro line alone (while outright neglecting the standard model) will kill off this product if it is sold at $1000+
The dead iPhone mini line beg to differ representing only 5% of sales lol. Us mini fans are like unicorns. When we see each other we know we bought the best iPhone in year yet no one else agrees with our logic.

Though I’m kinda bummed if the redesign is the flat edge apple watch meaning this redesign will make older designs seem old… make me hesitant to upgrade my series 5 knowing regular series is now the old design and series 9 main line Apple Watch May feature the new design. Darn.

I wanted to buy one

Then I realized I would have to give up on all my straps I've collected over the years 🥲
It is only a matter of time before we cross that bridge. I’m honestly surprised they went this long without releasing a form factor that ushered in a whole new band system. It’s what they do. And just likely any standard they changed in the past, people will initially gripe, then get over it, then proclaim it the best idea ever and we’ll be off into the next phase of - in this case - watch bands. The world spins. Apple makes money.

The so-called "Apple Watch Pro" will feature a larger 47mm case size, according to a report today from Japanese website Mac Otakara. By comparison, the Apple Watch Series 7 is available in 41mm and 45mm case sizes.

A larger 47mm case size would result in the Apple Watch Pro having a larger display, which could measure in at 1.99 inches diagonally.

The report, citing information received from "reliable sources," also claims the Apple Watch Pro will feature a completely flat display, whereas existing Apple Watch models have slightly curved edges around the display. The flat design could improve the durability of the Apple Watch Pro, which Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported will be a "rugged" model designed for high-impact activities like hiking and extreme sports.

While a 47mm case size is new information, the flat display has been rumored previously. Other features expected for the Apple Watch Pro include a titanium casing, longer battery life, an expanded Low Power Mode, an S8 chip, and more.

Apple is expected to announce the Apple Watch Pro alongside two standard Apple Watch Series 8 models and the iPhone 14 at its September 7 media event. Pricing remains to be seen, but titanium Apple Watch models currently start at $799 in the United States, so it would be reasonable to expect a starting price of around $799 to $999.

The Apple Watch is ugly, a square box. A box with a tiny battery. Its accurate, its software is great, when I walk the streets of NYC it looks as if 100's people are in a black-box club, with no character. The Withings ScanWatch has 30 days battery life, yes it does far less, its step counter is usually 1200 steps below my iPhone13Pro but does SPO2, ECG, BPM and sleep tracking. Its AFib warning is pathetic, but it has 30 days of battery life and is beautiful.

I’ll leverage this reply again: if there were an iPad Upgrade Program, people most definitely would.

I don’t know if it’ll be this year, next, or when, but I fully expecting them to, at some point, expand iPhone Upgrade Program to other - if not (eventually) all - devices. That, alone, will take them to $4 trillion. 🤪

let’s be frank. the apple watch line hasn’t really “changed” for 4-5 years. I’m disappointed that you need to buy a pro just for a design change.
Im more interested in what's going on under the hood.. eg the sensors than the design to be honest.
The pro may have a flatter look but I can see the regular line heading that direction next year. What concerns me is that all new sensors going forward will be reserved for the Pro. Its a worry but obviously not confirmed.

The last time Apple positioned the Watch as a luxury line it didn't work. It only became really popular when they realised it could be marketed as a health device for everyone with the 'option' of luxury finishes.

All will become clear in due course.

Disagree. There's a special type of attachment to a phone that would encourage people to take out a hard credit check and fresh loan every year (which the iUP is, lets me honest). Can't see that same level of enthusiasm for an iPad.

The watch?.. maybe.

The times it doesn’t last 24 hours, is it tethered to iPhone, or just you wearing watch without phone around?

Also, are we talking it goes from 100% to 0% in less than 24 hours?
It’s always tethered to my phone. The battery usually lasts about 23hr. I get about 20 texts a day on average that it alerts me on.

I wish I could have the brightness on the middle setting, but with that, sleep tracking is a lost cause. Sleep tracking isn’t even that hard on the battery. I lose about 5% doing that.

It’s an issue of timing. By 9 o’clock I want to get into bed, watch some cartoons while my watch charges from 35% to full, but sometimes I’m too tired to wait for it to top off.

I really need a 36hr capable watch that meets my modest demands so that at night I’m only charging from 65% to 100%.

This was my experience with the Apple Watch 4. Best battery life I’ve ever had in an Apple Watch. I upgraded from the 4 to the 6 because after 2 years the battery wasn’t quite as good, thinking that the 6’s new battery would be at least as good as the 4 was when new. Anyway, same usage pattern with the 6 and now the 7 as with my old 4, and am definitely not getting what I would call good battery life.

It does meet the published 18hr that Apple advertises, so technically I got what I paid for, but I’m definitely in the camp of needing 50-100% more battery life for my modest but well rounded usage pattern.

Really? The larger of the two current watches is 45mm. That's a difference of 2mm. That's about 5/64" of an inch. If 47mm is absolutely bonkers, does that mean that the current 45mm model is almost-as-much bonkers?
Thank you. 2mm. I don’t think people understand how small that is.

I have medium to small wrists and the 45mm is noticeable, but not overbearing.

I see teenagers with similarly small or smaller wrists wearing G Shock watches that are 49mm. Does anyone go around calling these watches “bonkers”?

Right now the different models have different sensors.

I want a new watch, but not one priced at 1k price tag, whatever they do, it is still a piece of tech that will get old, it is not a Rolex.
Good thing they are keeping the "cheaper" versions of the Apple Watch then for people like you who don't want to spend 1k on an apple watch. Assuming the Pro is 1k anyway, that isn't confirmed.

I agree with you. Valid points!

People said the exact same thing about Pro Max or Max models. “the phones are too big”, “it won’t fit the Jean pockets”, “it’s a big phone holding down to the ear” and so on… years later it is the most popular model.

Rest assured, This 47mm Apple Watch will sell out quickly and will be back ordered instantly.
I for one will help that happen. If it has a flat glass screen, I’m on it. I have the 45mm now and it’s not mutant big. 2mm is 5/64….just over 1/16 that is barely noticeable. The question…will they make it so that the 44/45mm bands will still fit?

Agree. Have you seen Diesel watches? They are humongous and very popular model amoung Men’s in the U.S.

Having to introduce a bigger Apple Watch. Apple is taking this to another level. I bet you, this will be a “One more thing” moment on Sept 7 event. 🫠
Yes and Invicta watches….they have many models that are big af!

I’m all for a thinner design, the current is pretty thick looking. But I don’t like that you’d have to pay extra for a new design.
