Why the hate on Masimo?

Apple has trillions, they could pay the fees and in the meantime aquire Masimo or something similiar, end of story.
But this outcome, removing an existing feature in the US, what is even that?
How can any customer support that and just think, "Ok, I am still loving it"
I agree with all except Apple buying them, that won't happen.

Previously the CEO said they didn't want to license, they wanted to "collaborate" with Apple on their O2 sensor. I also recall reading they wanted like $100 per Apple Watch sold.

I think you're right their CEO is trying something beyond a straight payout.
Please provide proof of this 100 dollar per watch claim...

Irony being Masimo started this legal campaign around the same time they were readying their own watch. Which looks like a poor Apple Watch clone. Also their suit seems predicated on Apple poaching people for this technology. But Apple did not implement this until many years later. It is also not illegal to poach employees.
This has been going on for years......

Apple has better things to do than burn $10+ billion in cash or add that much in debt to buy Massimo. Presuming Massimo even wants to be bought by Apple. And considering nothing Massimo makes with the exception of that one patent that expires in four years fits Apple's product portfolio...
I generally agree, but since this was a perfect opportunity to remind everyone, Apple burned $10 billion on project Titanic, I mean Titan.

Masimo also tried to say that jailbreaking is "permissible, common, and readily known," but Masimo's arguments were unsuccessful.

it's not permissible *at all*. while i'm pretty sure it doesnt fly in the face of T.O.S., apple has always and continues to patch up vulnerabilities in their OS that would be exploitable by people who like...want their phones to do more useful things.

common, not so much any more.

readily known....i mean it's not a secret?

apple took most of their major great OS enhancements from things that were available to jailbreakers well before apple implemented them. the first app store on the phone was Cydia xD

masimo might want to take a trip down history lane as apple historically does not support jailbreaking....at all.

If the patent expires in 2028 then why not make a licensing deal/settlement that will pay Masimo their fair share of royalties on watches sold in the USA until that date. It is not like Apple would be locked into a long-term royalty contract. Apple should do this for their customers.

Hoping to see a workaround so that the new watches released this year will have it. Wonder how many will keep using their existing Apple watches post 2028!

They do frequently license it off, which you seemed to object to. The university is not the party commercializing the patent in that case, the licensee is.
I’m not objecting to any patent holder original, assigned, acquiring doing whatever they want to do with their intellectual property. It’s up to them. If they buy it and exploit it as an investment via licensing that’s up to them. It’s just as legit as if being used for in house production. (Except to some folks ((not saying that’s you per se)) who don’t have a clue about how patents work.)

I want an Apple that is inventing solutions, not hiring workers from other companies that bring protected IP with them. This never should've happened.
That’s a part of daily business.

Apple loses people to other companies who want experience all the time.

It’s good for the employees.

A couple weeks ago, I bought an Ultra 2 at my local Costco. I couldn't believe I got one of the "old" ones with pulse Ox sensor. Yeah, me.

So, that's one year before the series 9 gets no more software updates? I'm sure, Apple will do this, they are renowned for caring about older hardware 🤣

Otoh, it's a pretty gimmicky fesature, like EEG - it won't be missed.
The EEG works well enough that it diagnosed AF in my Dad and confirmed by my wife (a doc) when she read the PDF trace. As a result he was treated and likely avoided a significant stroke event.

The non-functionality only applies to the USA.
So, if I purchase an Apple Series 9 outside the USA, such as on a business trip to Europe/Japan; and I activate it in Japan .... does it work?
Sadly, no. The watch will detect your nationality and Siri will immediately yell out: "Amurrrican detected" and turn the feature off. Sorry :-/

Joke, sorry!

PS. Yes, it will work. It must. This legal ban is only for watches sold in the U.S.

Because Apple is confident that they will get the last couple patent toss like the got the others toss. From what I understand one the of the remaining patents is for putting a finger sensor on your wrist.

Probably, but the next time you update the software in the US it'll probably disable it
I recall the models with function disabled have different model number?

So might still work

Do the ones sold in the USA before the ban still have it working?

According to the article, watches destined to be sold in the US have it disabled at the factory. So if you buy a non US model it doesn't apply in the first place. If you buy an affected US model and activate it anywhere it won't work.

Masimo has every right to defend their property. And I am sure there are instances where having their simple blood oxygen meter is better and more reliable.

But for the most apple watch users, the reading is sufficient and accurate enough. I dont want to wear a seperate device that only read blood oxygen. So that point doesnt really make sense to me

“It’s exactly the same tech we use so Apple shouldn’t be allowed to use it but it’s completely unreliable and a useless gimmick.” OK bruh.
