The trick is to wait for the 14-day return period to expire to really know how successful this new product is.

And if you research some of my posts, that is my biggest gripe. The price point makes no sense other than "materials".

1) nobody is going to research your posts.

2) 450 for a high quality linked bracelet is not unusual, and by all measures it's a very high quality band. that it doesn't require a trip to the jeweler to remove links is particularly innovative.

Soft demand as I thought. I predict demand will soften more when the hype dies.

if that's what you thought, you're thinking wrong. a million preorders at launch is an amazing number. twice the iPad's.

try harder.

just a rough guess, hoping tommorrow apple will release official info

It's unlikely. Apple is not breaking out sales numbers for the Watch in their financial releases.

1 million in the U.S. would be impressive, though. BMO's estimate of 39.9 million for the first year aw ems like pie in the sky. This is a new category and not filling an obvious shortcoming.

I think the word you were looking for there was "realistic," but I'll forgive you because that's not a word many people around here are familiar with.

Just more proof that whatever positive news comes out of Apple land, someone will always put a negative spin on it.

what on earth would lead you to consider they're scanning people's email without permission and then publicizing it? that doesn't really make much sense, does it?

I'm trying to understand who would let an outfit like that track their emails. I know I wouldn't.

I'd think how many RETURNS is the more poignant statistic. ;-|

Many have bought one just to try it out like a new toy, but who already know it's a gimmicky device for their lifestyle, so plan on returning it a week or two after getting it. Pity, but true nonetheless.

actually, there's nothing true about what you've said. you've made something up and are passing it off as fact, when in real life it's just something you came up with in your head.

The post you quoted asked whether the watch would continue to gain sales each revision, as the iphone has done, not whether it would sell as many units. Thus comparing the pattern of growth, not the overall sales numbers.

yes, which is the new requirement -- the skeptics who before said the device will "flop" are now saying that amazing opening sales are not an indicator of not-flopping, that it must now be judged after a long period of time and can't resemble sales of the iPad.

I think the word you were looking for there was "realistic," but I'll forgive you because that's not a word many people around here are familiar with.

It was also "realistic" that most people didn't have any interest in an Apple Watch in the first place. But if you ask me, 1 million U.S. preorders in the first day is pretty damn impressive.

That's a lot of watches, especially considering it is a new product category, and also considering that only people who already own an iPhone 5 or later will be purchasing the watch, which effectively shrinks their market from the get-go

To put it in perspective the number 1 Smartwatch manufacturer is Samsung with 1.2million sales in 2014. Second place is Pebble with 700 000 units...

Reality check: Apple sold in one day almost as many watches as Samsung sold in all of 2014, or, as many watches as Pebble(2nd place) sold in all of 2013 and 2014 combined. If that is not success, please tell me what is.

ever hear of a service called "Gmail"? they let people scan their emails too, and mine them for information to use for targeted advertising.

The number is too good to be true, especially the blooded part.

Some 957,000 people in the U.S. ordered an Apple Watch on the first day the smartwatch was on sale.

Wow! What did the iPhone sell like 10 million pre-orders? :D I think 1million+ is a pretty solid number for Apple.

Keep in mind that you already need to have an iPhone to have this.

A lot of people don't even know these smartwatches exist. Once Apple Watch starts to gain more traction in the public, Samsung and Pebble will sell more, though not going to be as much as the Apple counterpart, at least in the United States.

Yeah, 1 million pre-ordered on FIRST day...
50% will be returned because everyone ordered 2 different sizes just to try...
Another 25% will be returned because they realize the Watch sucks...
100,000 are just developers buying watches
10,000 are just media/reporters buying watches
90% of the remainder are just sheep buying because they have to - because they're loyal to Apple. They'll be in their sock drawers within a week
Maybe there will be 100 people that buy it for real and really use it.
Android Wear has 700,000 loyal customers who love their watches and it changed their lives.

So, Android is winning 7000 to 1.

This is the Android spin we'll see in the coming days....

Half way through your post I thought you were one of them

Based on data from the Smartwatch Group, 6.8 million smartwatches shipped in 2014. Of those, the leaders were: Samsung - 1.2 million, Pebble - 700 thousand, and Fitbit - 600 thousand. I don't how many months of the year each manufacturer had watches for sale. It will be interesting to see 2015 results.

However, one million Apple watch preorders at launch doesn't sound too bad. I don't know if we will see in such a crowded field of smartwatch manufacturers, one selling more than all the other manufactures combined.

I would not be surprised if the next iOS 8.4 update will remove the clock from the iPhone.

"We believe that a phone must be simplified and your timepiece should be the new Apple WATCH."

I was referring to the comment you replied to. It's very realistic to say that a large # of orders will be returned because of the manner in which Apple made pre-orders available. People made multiple orders, then went into the store to check them out and then cancelled one order.

Personally to me, 1mil seems low, because it's realistically probably 1/4 less than that (due to returns) and that was the hardcore crowd right there. The majority of the interest in this thing has already bought one.

It was also "realistic" that most people didn't have any interest in an Apple Watch in the first place. But if you ask me, 1 million U.S. preorders in the first day is pretty damn impressive.

10 Mio iPhone pre-orders worldwide. The 1 mio watches is just US
I total there will be more pre-orders on one day than a whole year sales of all other smartwatches together

Why return it? I'd just sell it on Craigslist or eBay for twice what I paid, just to make someone else happy.

Oh, I'd be happy too...

(Note, folks, I'm saying that I'd sell it if I wasn't happy with it, not as a :apple:Watch Scalper)

you would never have the option to sell an android wear device for twice the price ###

I would expect these numbers to be more front-loaded than usual. It was always going to sell out on day 1 to fans. It's sales on day 100 from those on the fence or who have yet to consider a smart watch that will determine the success of the product.
