Now this pisses me off! I was going to buy two stainless steel models and surprise my fiancée with one as a wedding gift. Now I'll need to wake her up at 12:am and have her purchase it (with the money I give her of course) This is so stupid.

If you have a friend who isn't interested in buying one, you could ask them to buy it and then give them the money...

I'm sure they are very concerned that resellers are going to horde the supply and drive up the price. Because of the negativity surrounding the pricing of the Edition model and the Watch in general, they can't afford for the message to continue to be "It is waaaaaay too expensive for us normal people. They're on eBay for thousands!"

It doesn't stop them at all. That's why you see them in line with 10 other "family members" all buying two each. This might slow them down, but not stop by any means. This however does make things more difficult for me. I was planning on surprising my fiancée with one as a wedding gift. Now I'll have to have her or a friend purchase it. ....just another hurdle I suppose.

Well... If online orders aren't limited to one why not just do that?

You COULD surprise her with one, then have her come with you to get yours later. Depends on how much you love your fiancée, I guess.

I guess in my head I wanted us to have it at the same time. Or watching her unwrapping it before me. Guess I'll have a friend order it for me.

Information is slowing trickling in...

All I want to know if in store reservations also start at midnight on Friday. If not I'll probably just order one to ship, but I'd much rather get it at the store.

I never understood why any retailer LIMITs what you can buy. It defeats all logic.

Apple does this for their customers benefit and to eliminate scalping. 2 is usually the limit though.

I've waited in line only to witness the people ahead of me buy exactly the limit in cash and then reconvene to give them to their "boss" who will in turn take them over seas and sell them on the grey market. I'll never forget my experience trying to buy an iPad 2 and Apple selling out because of this very practice.

Limitations like this will not hurt their business where it counts. All the people who want their devices will still want them, they may be delayed in getting them in remote cases but at least they will be getting them from Apple directly.

With all that said I was banking on being able to buy 2, one for my wife and myself. I guess I'll just have to order it on her behalf somehow and we'll both go pick them up.

can you not just buy it on her name with your card?

when something is limited here I usually just use a different house number I can do either 5 or 7 and the name of the city or the suburb so it "appears" different

edit: oh I can't read. Doesn't count for online orders so whatever

No you don't!

You can buy 2 in 2 separate orders. One with her name, one with yours. She can stay asleep at 3am. She'll just have to pick it up on the day. Surprise her by taking her to the Apple Store, don't tell her what for until you get to the store.

Or order one shipped to your parent's house in your parent's name, and pick it up there for your fiancée..

Are you sure this isn't only for US customers? You said "in-store pickup will not be available whatsoever to U.K. customers at launch" in this article.
That is indeed quite annoying if in-store pick-up is unavailable for us UK customers!
Furthermore, I notice that you're in the midlands. The Solihull store is usually a good place to buy apple stuff on release days, far less busier than the central bham store, especially on school nights. Might make a trip down from Manc.

I strongly suspect this is less about inventory and more along the lines of a trial balloon for future iPhone launches.

Really?!? Wouldn't I need to sign in on her Apple Store ID and buy it? Or just fill in her name?

When demand is low and supply is high, you got to do what you gotta do to prop up the card tent.

"We have plenty of stock but the lines were so long that people had to come back later to make a purchase. We hope by end of year we meet our Apple Watch sales projections."

Do you have more than one credit card? Set up another Apple ID and buy a 2nd watch if they limit online purchases. Put the 2nd watch in your fiancée's name.

I'm guessing they'll allow at least 2 with online preorders. They know families live in the same house and may use the same credit card and Apple ID.

It doesn't though because it stops scalpers buying up the product and selling for more which is not good business for Apple.

At least with the iPhone 6, offshore-scalpers just payed people to stand in line and buy them here - one at a time doesn't appear to be a big problem getting in their way.

Presumably this restriction would only be in place during the launch (before worldwide availability)...but people buying them for sale outside the country will move ahead just fine (having friends and relatives get them here, just like with the iPhone 6), even with this process.

Its hard to see Apple fumbling something as crucial as the in store sales experience, but they have someone new in charge so nothing is out of the question (remember that "new" British guy that was going to cut back on Apple store employees to save money?). Wait and see.

I strongly suspect this is less about inventory and more along the lines of a trial balloon for future iPhone launches.

You might be right, but taking a step back - why would you alter your buyer's experience with a questionable change for a brand new important product launch? Be fun to watch.

No problems. I am organizing the Chinese line for two weeks. Maybe you will have your watch next month. Maybe...

Yeah. That's what I took away. Doesn't count for online orders. This is all due to low store inventory and scalpers.
