There's a reason NASA specified Hesalite acrylic crystals for the Omega Speedmaster "moonwatches" used in the Apollo program. In fact, sapphire is disallowed for any space flight rated watches to this day.

Here we go again.

Attempting to commit fraud is wrong. Encouraging others to commit fraud is wrong.

In the UK, both acts are also criminal offences.

Would-be insurance fraudsters also get added to databases that are shared across the financial services and other industries.

Being on these databases can affect your ability to buy products from online retailers and to get financial services including loans, credit cards, mortgages, bank accounts, etc, etc.

When these things happen and you don't have AC+, the best advice is to be honest and pay what's needed to have Apple fix it properly.

If you like the idea of AC+, it's best to buy it at the same time as your Watch, so that it's covered from the very moment you receive it.

Capitalism is itself inherently built upon fraud if you want to get all high and mighty about it.

Sapphire crystal has always been prone to shattering. Somehow on MR, the notion (amongst a bunch of folks who never previously wore a mechanical watch) became commonplace that sapphire was seemingly indestructible. It's great for keeping your watch face devoid of scratches. Will generally break just like anything else if dropped from a certain distance onto a hard surface.

We all have seen both type Aplle Watch screens broken when dropped. The sapphire screen is still far superior for scratch resistance.

That's what I tell the Apple Store workers but they always look at me like I'm crazy and say it's not true. They try to tell me it's more shatter resistant than the Ion-X. o_O

They usually know far less than the regulars here. We've had them tell us that the Sport comes with two full sets of bands and other BS.

Yeah, I've noticed that they generally get really upset when you give them contrary information to what they think is true. Can't tell you how many times I've seen faces change from a smile to an angry expression because of this.

I always tell them I'm speaking from reading many accounts of others and they also gives me a bunch of reasons why I shouldn't listen to people on message boards.

They also tried to tell me the stainless steel doesn't scratch easily. o_O

Now you know not to bother talking with them.

6am. Dropped on marble tile floor from waist height. Luckily had apple care - replaced in 2 days. Need to be more awake when putting on in the am

Those parts look suspect to me.
Why? It looks pretty much identical to the iFixit teardown from what I can tell from memory.

Forging a part like that is going to be exceedingly difficult, because of stuff like the integrated ARM microcontroller and ambient light sensor and so on. Not to mention that OLED displays don't grow on trees either.

I just heard back from Amex, and they are going to take care of me. I've been told I will receive a credit in the amount of $355 in the next day or so. So happy ending for me. :)

Hey, great news for you. Thanks for coming back and letting us know how the AMEX benefit came through.

Those parts look suspect to me.

Yeah wonder if the parts come from that illegal "Apple" factory that got busted just the other day in China that made the news all over with a number of people arrested and the factory shut down.

Not sure what you're trying to say. Apple does not routinely offer free replacements, even if you're honest about what happened.

It *used* to be an unofficial policy that your first accidental damage incident was free. That stopped when tim cook took over though.

Apple glueing everything together and charging $329 to replace a $10 part (or the whole $80 watch) is a fraud.

Even cheap 2-digit $ traditional watches can be fully disassembled and crystal be swapped.

Shame shame shame.

Apple = glu Glue GLUE

It actually stopped when they made the transition from AppleCare to AppleCare+, for obvious reasons.

It stopped before that, well here in the UK anyway. I believe the turning point was when that bloke from Dixons was brought in to take over retail. That's when the penny pinching began.

How exactly is it fraud? You don't *have* to use their service - they're not forcing you. Are they going to make a profit on it - of course. They're a business after all.
