I just rewatched the keynote from last year (just the AW part) and when they announced the sleep apnea feature, they totally made it sound like it was for the S10, but it too rolled out to the S9 and the AWU2.

It will be interesting to see what the parameters of the BP monitor are. How will body shape influence it, and age?
Also, I would think combined, this would be an advance towards general health monitoring, maybe with AI? Will you be able to adjust it?

It is, but they can't call it that. In order for it to detect hypertension (blood pressure) it needs to read BP, obviously. But it's a tricky position. It's good though (I think). It must be robust for Apple to let this pass. Then again, they aren't infaible, as they often point out with ...law suites, etc,
My hunch is this is machine learning detection rather than a new sensor added. It likely uses a combination of oximetry, temperature, and other data to detect possible hypertension. I could be wrong though!

Edit: Yes, definitely some form of machine learning: "As of September 9, 2025, hypertension notifications are currently under FDA review and expected to be cleared this month, with availability on Apple Watch Series 9 and later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later. The feature is not intended for use by people under 22 years old, those who have been previously diagnosed with hypertension, or pregnant persons."

So the hypertension doesn’t use a new sensor, so coming to older watches? (hahaha)
Yes

The hypertension alert seems super useful. They claim to alert 1 billion people in the first year although some may already be aware they have this condition. I think it's a great motivator to get active and clean up your diet. Could save a lot of misery.

So there's no sensor with the 11? People should be well aware of this, as I could see it causing some confusion. But it was just announce, so.....

Big move Apple!

Wow! Good on Apple for enabling hypertension and sleep score on older models! I had a feeling they would after that moving video at the beginning.

They did the same with the launches last year: sound vague enough that it could be interpreted like they’re exclusive to the new AW but release them on older models. Their wording was so vague.

It sounded to me like it was Watch 11,SE 3, Ultra 3 only.
It wasn’t clear. I would expect the hypertension feature might be the new models only. But as others have said, the sleep score feature feels like it should be possible on older models. But maybe not 🤷‍♂️

the 11 doesn't have new sensors nor sip for sleep apnea. and the se3 gets it too. If my 10 doesn't get this I will freak the f out

It’s quite an amazing world we live in where people *expect* their hardware to be more capable year/s after purchase due to free upgrades. And not just expect, but get angry when that expectation isn’t realized.
