For me, unless I’m getting a week it doesn’t matter whether I get a full day or two days. I’m used to topping it off once or maybe twice a day and if I know I’m going to be gone for several days I bring a charger with me.

I personally think it sucks to have to charge your watch let alone once but twice a day. That’s why they should have left the battery the same size so everyone can get at least one day out of it.

Don’t bother telling me I’m wrong, because...whatever. It seems when I keep Maps in the dock, the battery drains much faster.
Not your experience...that’s fine.
But, Series 4 is the best Watch...ever. I’m not wrong about that.

With my original watch, if it’s charged in the morning, it has 50-60% left when I go to bed. The extra battery capacity is useless unless you forget to charge it or it gets knocked off the charger, in which case it can usually last all the way to the next night before losing charge.

I can’t really see the decreased capacity as a big negative.

I don't get the 18 hours thing either. When I put mine on the charger last night it still had like 60% left. I would have to really use the heck out of it to get it to go belly up in 18 hours.
Well then, if I hadn’T just broken my progressive/transition glasses and been informed I needed a new $700 pool part, I guess I’d be heading out to get one now - as I had originally planned before the battery issue showed up and I had a $1,000 worth of busted stuff dropped into my budget. :-(

Same. I haven’t gotten it below 50% yet and that’s even on days I did workouts and used LTE a lot.

i used to be able to charge my S3 watch every other day, this S4 is every day no matter what i do and i'm not using it any more than i did my S3.

Apple makes a killing on accessories, no need to increase battery life. I applaud Mr. Cook for exploiting profit margins b/c all the Apple fans keep complaining verbally but their wallets say otherwise. I'm surprised Apple hasn't made an official accessory for portable watch charging that are just now starting to pop up on Amazon.

For the record, sold my Apple Watch 3 b/c I couldn't stand "all day battery life." My garmin has all week battery life (personal best is 11 days).

Bigger batteries aren’t the solution to the power challenges of portable devices. Infact they are rather limiting to mobility since they have limited flexibility due to simple physics/chemistry.

Improved power efficiency is absolutely what all engineers should be striving for as frankly energy/matter is finite.

As an engineer, I agree. As a user, I could care less especially when these devices are already small as it is.

They are creating a problem with a potential solution in the future that not many asked for. But alas, it's how they get you to buy future iterations of the watch.

The next gen will get back to the old capacity (maybe more thickness) and then Apple will sell this as a great feature haha

I think efficiency leading to smaller batteries are a good thing. Smaller batteries mean faster recharging times and (hypothetically) lower costs.
Lower costs for whom? For you? For Apple?
If you think that charging your phone costs you a lot of electricity per year, then you are wrong.

The biggest problem with my S0 is battery life. Why not keep the extra thickness and increase battery size?

If a phone's battery is too small; you can use it while its plugged in. A watch needs to last all day, and continue to last all day after a few years when the battery has degraded.

You may not notice. In fact, s0 is the thinnest instead of otherwise.

s0: 10.5mm
s3: 11.4mm
s4: 10.7mm

So for a s0 user, there are all extra thickness and there is no way to keep the thickness of s0.

I’ll be the first, why not keep the same size battery and increase the usage time even more? Never makes sense to me.

Do you actually use it? I’ve owned every generation, work out 2-3 hours a day, and compete. Gen 4 is an amazing update. The thinner watch, larger display, and improved HR monitoring has been great.

They made the whole packaging thinner, because they *could*. And from someone who uses it daily. And exercises 2-3 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s greatly appreciated.

Dammit I knew it! There must be some software issues too. i love my S4 but the battery is at around 25-30% at the end of the day. My S3 was around 65-70%. I thought i could keep my S4 for a couple of years, but now it looks like i'm going to have to get next years model in the hope that it improves battery life. My S3 watch was at 83% with my girlfriend wearing it all day yesterday including doing a 1hr run. I was down to 22% on my S4 with only 1.5hours of additional usage on mine.

Are you an athlete or a teacher in gym? For a regular person, he can't workout 2-3 hours a day, 7 days a week. He can't do it physically and he can't make out that much time.

I’ve consistently gotten about 2 1/2 days with S0, S3, and my new S4. I receive notifications and texts, dismiss phone calls from unknown numbers, accept them from known (and converse on my official Dick Tracy Wrist Radio - god I’m old, since I know that reference :), check the weather, monitor my heart rate, and probably a bunch of stuff I’ve forgotten. I don’t use it to listen to music, or monitor workouts.

Don’t know how typical I am, but I’m happy with the battery life. When my watch tells me it’s time to recharge, I also put my iPhone X on the charging stand (and swap my Sparq lighter for a charged one).

I'm calling BS on your S0 getting 2 and a half days. Not a hope in hell. You would have to leave it locked on your wrist (not using it at all) to get that much life. I've owned a S0, S2, S3c and S4. The S3 can get 2.5 days of use on if no calls or workouts are made. But the S0 could hardly make it to midnight with doing virtually nothing with it.

I get better battery life on my one year old series 3 than my new series 4

Same here, after 3+ years the battery is still doing very very well. No concern about the battery from my side.
It’s the OLED only which turned into crap.

Maybe, but I have found iterations of watchOS to evolve toward greater power management.

I agree.
I’m guessing it sounds like some people either don’t have access to a charger every night (get another cable), or never take their watch off (I doubt some NEVER take it off). I don’t get it personally.
Charging at night isn’t any more difficult than charging your phone? And if it is ... talk about first world problems.
Some use their watch for sleep tracking ,but can’t you charge while in the shower?

Bah all you want. I think the battery should last as long as apple claims which is the same amount as the S3. This is not the case, not even close.

You know what, this is intented by apple, the AW4 is a in between upgrade, the AW5 will get the bigger battery life.

Why? because now you get the bigger screen, next year the increment would be too small as the screen will be the same size, more of the same features, the big thing will be increased battery life. That will be next years seller.

It is really simple math, the battery is physically smaller, you have a bigger screen, no way in hell the battery life can be the same as the S3. Yes the processor is now less power consuming but thats also to compensate for the larger screen.

To be honest, I'm sure people would have preferred a slightly larger battery vs the 1mm reduction in thickness.

No. My biggest complaint about the series 3 is how thick it was. The watch feels like it’s levitating on my wrist.

If apple let the thickness the same and add a more battery life on it, what’s the difference it can make?

The series 4 ends up with 25% battery life at night when I go to sleep, a thicker series 4 with more battery will probably end up with 30-35% battery life in bed time, in the end you still need to charge it at night.

I think apple will keep the series 4 thick like the series 3 if the additional battery capacity can make a huge difference such as going from all day battery life to 2 days battery life. I’m glad that they decided to reduce the thickness of the series 4 instead.

We're talking about the S4 processor, not the iPod Touch. Try to pay attention and keep up with the discussion here.
We are talking about a more advanced processor in a new version of a device, same thing. It's a parallel concept. Try to keep up.

First time owner here so no previous models to compare to. I charged mine 48 hours ago at 8am and it is currently at 31% still with me switching it off at night. I've had two 1.5hour workouts and have been playing around with different features the past two days quite often since I'm still figuring it out. I love this watch and the battery certainly will never be an issue.
