until then I just find it funny folks want these stupid things. Oh look, i can my messages on my wrist now instead of on my iphone on the table...oooh!

To each their own?

I for example haven't been wearing watches for decades. I always have my phone on mute and kept missing texts and calls. All. the. time. The watch actually improved that significantly. It also improved my workout experience. I may only use a fraction of the offered functions, but those that I do use have improved my life immensely.

But go ahead and keep feeling superior for not needing and wanting such a "stupid thing".

Sapphire crystal, more durable metal, and a richer, more polished look.

Whatever my aluminum watch crystal is, it’s held up fine, as has the watch body... and I’m not easy on them ... so more durable .. who cares? And a richer look? Really? I’ve never heard anyone say, oh baby that stainless Apple Watch looks so fine, the others are trash. Get over it. I was replying to some one who was thinking about a stainless series three versus new tech series 4... go new tech, even if it’s aluminum. No one got ‘favors’ for having stainless over aluminum. Just saying.

Yep, I want one. I’d like to see a comparison of the S3 42mm vs the S4 40mm. Might go with the smaller version as normal watches at 44mm and up are too big for me.

Print these to scale 44mm and 40mm out, trim the red areas off the edges and you'll have the 42mm and 38mm.

I haven't seen any sites mention that Apple is now using an LPTO screen in the Series 4.

Here's an article from about a month ago mentioning this rumor.

https://www.apple.com/apple-watch-series-4/design/

View attachment 781425

Wow good catch! I can’t believe this hasn’t been mentioned in anywhere that I’ve seen (and I’ve been around the internet a lot these past 24 hours....). 5-15% battery improvement due to this is nothing to sneeze at... I just wish it had made it improved enough for always on display... Even if the display is dimmed and some complications only appear with a tap/raise

The all-new Apple Watch Series 4 is just hours from being available for pre-order, with orders opening on Apple.com at 12:01 a.m. PDT on September 14. If you're still on the fence about jumping to the new generation, this post should help you discern all of the pros and cons between sticking with your Apple Watch Series 3 or going with the upgraded Apple Watch Series 4.

Display

Perhaps the first thing you'll notice about the Series 4 is its bigger display, which is up to 35 percent larger than the Series 3. Specifically comparing the larger 42mm Series 3 and 44mm Series 4 models, the Series 3 has a 740 sq mm display area while the Series 4 has a 977 sq mm display area. This means that the 44mm Series 4's display is 32 percent larger than the 42mm Series 3.

Likewise for the smaller models, the 38mm Series 3 has a 563 sq mm display area, compared to the 40mm Series 4 with a 759 sq mm display area. This results in a 35 percent display size increase between generations. In essence, this means that the Series 4 packs more screen into what is nearly the same package as the Series 3, with slimmer bezels that are somewhat visually similar to the rounded corners of the iPhone X and iPhone XS.

The increased display area also results in increased resolution, with the 44mm Series 4 including 368x448 pixels, compared to 312x390 on the 42mm Series 3. The 40mm Series 4 has 324x394 pixels, while the 38mm Series 3 has 272x340 pixels. Thanks to all of these changes, app icons and fonts are now bigger and easier to read as well.

Case Size

Although the display sizes have been increased, there are minimal changes to the actual size of the cases for Apple Watch Series 4, despite the new measurements. 38mm in Series 3 and prior has become 40mm, and 42mm in Series 3 and prior has become 44mm, with both of these numbers representing the height of the Apple Watch Series 4 case.

This is a change that shouldn't be too noticeable, unless you're comparing the Series 4 with a previous generation model side-by-side. And don't worry about this update affecting your current band collection, as Apple made it clear during yesterday's keynote that all previous Apple Watch bands will fit with the Series 4 case.

apple-watch-series-3-vs-series-4-thick.jpg

Looking at the thinness, Apple Watch Series 4 is just under 1mm slimmer compared to Series 3. Series 4 measures in at 10.7mm thin, compared to 11.4mm thin for Series 3.

Processor

apple-watch-s4-100x100.jpg
As expected with an Apple update, the Series 4 has received a beefed up processor in the form of the 64-bit dual-core S4 processor.

Apple says that this is up to two times faster than the S3 processor found on the Series 3, enabling the Series 4 to be speedier when opening apps and performing other functions.

Watch Faces

Exclusive to Apple Watch Series 4 are a collection of watch faces that take advantage of the enlarged displays to showcase as many as eight complications.

apple-watch-series4_gold-stainless-steel_09122018.jpg

These complications have been enhanced to be more precise and provide more information, thanks to the increased display area.

There are also a few watch faces that will uniquely react to the edges of the Series 4's display, like Vapor, Liquid Metal, and Fire and Water.

Health

For the first time in a wearable device, you'll be able to take a full ECG reading on Apple Watch Series 4. Using electrodes built into the Digital Crown and a new electrical heart rate sensor in the back crystal, an included ECG app will perform a reading when you touch the Digital Crown and hold it for 30 seconds.

apple-watch-series4_ecg-crown_09122018.jpg

The app can classify if your heart is beating in a normal pattern or if there are signs of Atrial Fibrillation, which could hint at potential health complications. You'll be able to save your ECG recordings in the iOS Health app and create a PDF to share with your doctor. While Apple Watch has always been able to track your heart rate, the ECG app is a major update to Apple's wearable line.

The ECG app will be added to Apple Watch Series 4 later this year, and will only be available to customers in the United States at launch.

Tidbits

Below you'll find a quick list of features that are new and exclusive to Apple Watch Series 4, which are unavailable on Series 3 and prior devices. We've also listed everything that hasn't changed further down, one notable constant being 18-hour battery life.

Changes between Series 3 and Series 4:
[*]Series 4 now includes haptic feedback on the Digital Crown
[*]The black ceramic and sapphire crystal back allows radio waves to easily pass through Series 4 for better cellular service
[*]The speaker on Series 4 is 50 percent louder
[*]Apple has relocated the microphone so that it reduces echo for better sound quality on the receiving end of phone calls
[*]With a new accelerometer and gyroscope, Series 4 can detect if you fall down and ask if emergency services should be alerted
[*]The improved accelerometer can measure up to 32 g-forces, increased from up to 16 g-forces on Series 3
[*]Series 4 has Apple's new W3 wireless chip instead of the previous generation W2
[*]Connectivity improvements also include new Bluetooth 5.0, up from 4.2 on Series 3
[*]Now all models have 16GB storage capacities, instead of just GPS + Cellular on Series 3
[*]Second-generation optical heart sensor No changes between Series 3 and Series 4:
[*]Built-in rechargeable lithium ion battery with an 18-hour battery life
[*]GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, and GZSS
[*]LTE and UMTS on GPS + Cellular models
[*]802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
[*]Barometric altimeter
[*]Water resistance up to 50 meters
[*]Ambient light sensor
[*]Force Touch
[*]Display with 1,000 nits brightness
[*]Magnetic charging cable and USB power adapter included If you're interested, Apple Watch Series 4 pre-orders will kick off at 12:01 a.m. PDT on September 14. Our pre-order post can help you figure out when pre-orders go up for you if you're in a different time zone. We also went hands-on with Apple Watch Series 4 after yesterday's "Gather Round" event, which you can read here.

It's like Sherlock Homes with a magnifying glass.... literately

So no sapphire front for the Series 4, interesting. I'm not sure why, but I constantly am whacking my AW against doorframes etc. I guess that means AppleCare is in my future.

It is in the SS variant.....

I can't find that anywhere in the tech specs. All it says in the AW 4 specs page is:
  • All ceramic and sapphire crystal back
Before, it explicitly said that the SS face was sapphire and the Aluminium ones were Ion-X. From the series 3 page:

Display
  • Series 3 GPS + Cellular
    • Sapphire crystal (stainless steel and ceramic cases)
    • Ion-X glass (aluminum cases)
  • Series 3 GPS
    • Ion-X glass

Waiting for series 20 when the watch is a replacement for my iPhone. until then I just find it funny folks want these stupid things. Oh look, i can get my messages on my wrist now instead of on my iphone on the table...oooh!
Don’t be too cavalier without at least considering that others may have good reason to get their messages on their wrist. When I work in court it’s sometimes not appropriate to look at my phone but I can always look at my watch. Same goes for other environments where pulling out my phone is not acceptable. My AW has kept me updated on important messages where my phone can’t.

Anyone think it's worth upgrading from Series 1? I'm thinking yes but wanted some second opinions.

nope , still not worth - unfortunately
you dont gain anything as long its not fully iphone independent

please find the error in you own text. first hint appropriate - second hint look

if you are a security officer you shouldnt get distracted anyways, same for anything else in court - therefore are this rules

basicaly you are saying you found a way doing your job not that good using a device to break writen or spoken or unspoken rules.

I'd rather have a thicker case if it meant improved battery life.

Not for me. I may tolerate a bit thicker iPhone but not a watch. The one I have (series 3) takes me easy through 2 days of battery, but regardless....i put it every night at his dock before I go to bed and pick it in a morning. I don't sleep with it on my wrist. Not saying that more battery is not welcome, just saying so far I never felt that I was struggling with the battery life. I know lot of guys are obsessed with battery life and I wonder how or why? Unless you camping or away from civilisation for many days.

From a practical point of view, one reason to upgrade is if fall detection and the EKG functionality matter. My family has a history of heart disease, so an upgrade to S2 was definitely in-order just for the extra heart monitoring.

My father upgraded his S0 to an S3 so he could use the KardiaBand, but today he could just get an AW4 instead.

I've never really noticed the screen being too small, so the bigger screen isn't a big deal to me.

Fall detection isn't a big deal to me either, and they should be able to implement that on the AW2/3 as well.

However, for the senior market an AW4 is pretty compelling. EKG + Fall Detection + Activity tracking means that you probably won't die; you'll be able to call for help etc.

Question for all. I ordered the original Apple Watch when it first came out but returned it as I didn't vibe with it more than my FitBit. With the newly added ECG reading and a few more features, I'm interested again. One thing that sticks out is the 16GB of storage. Does anyone know if you can store music or stream music from your watch to Beats BT headphones w/o your phone nearby (as in the gym)? That would be a HUGE selling point for me. - Thanks.
Yes you can

Go away for the weekend, need a charger. Go on holiday, charger. That's the problem.

Translation: If you're not in the US, don't buy the AWS4 for the ECG unless it's actually available. Probably, you can skip it right away for the AWS5. I learned my lesson from the Apple TV when it comes to that kind of announcements...

Yes you can

I have. It last easy 2 days for me. Of course you need a charger for a holiday and few grams of charger in my luggage does not make any difference. Like I said, I am not obsessed with stuff like that.

On the order page it's listed. Not sure why they don't list it under comparisons though.

I've never had an issue finding space in my bags for an Apple Watch charger.

my bags incredibly small ;)

Can I stream Spotify with an Apple Watch? I prefer it to Apple Music specially for the connect feature

I'd love 44mm if good apps existed. At the moment, I basically only use stock apps.
Take something like email. I get the notification on my watch, but 99% of the time the email is unreadable when I try to open it. It can't open rich formatting of what?
And a bunch of apps dont have Apple Watch apps, like WhatsApp. All I can do is read the notification and then get my phone.
I have a Series 2 42mm at the moment, so Series 4 40mm will give me exactly the same screen size.
If Apple ever improves WatchKit I'll definetely get the 44mm.

Anyone think it's worth upgrading from Series 1? I'm thinking yes but wanted some second opinions.

I'm upgrading from S1. Wasn't sure at first, but I think the bigger screen real-estate will look awesome and I fancy a colour change anyway. My S1 still works beautifully though and I think it's easily got another couple of years left in it, so it's not a "necessary" upgrade.

I'll get a new watch when they figure out a way to do some kind of always on display for at least the time. Wasn't OLED supposed to have advantages over LCD, like less power consumed on dark screens and always on elements, I"m seeing none of this in Apple products
Why would you need to have it on all the time exactly? Each time you look at your watch you can see the time

Since I'm not upgrading my X, I will probably upgrade my Series 3 even though I really don't need to. But I figure the S4 I'll keep around for at least two years or more.
