I'm disappointed they discontinued the s4 because I was hoping for a discount on Black Friday, which usually only discounts the previous generation.

It is not uncommon to see "recently discontinued" models of Apple products on sale around Black Friday.

I suspect there will be deals to be had on the AW Series 4 around Black Friday. You just won't see them from Apple.

If the screen is still OLED then how always on display will affect it, considering the burn in issue of OLED displays?
The same could be said about the increased screen size from the S3 to S4, yet still maintain the all day battery life. My guess is that when Apple implemented the new screen technology of LTPO along with some fancy software work within the chip, some burn-in is mitigated for the S4, and now S5. As all OLED displays, some burn-in could occur.

I'm finally upgrading my original (Series 0) AW, so this is a worthwhile update for me. I don't think Series 4 owners should budge though.

It would be interesting if this happened. It’s going to be hard to get much excitement unless it’s around $250 to $275 because now the series 3 starts at $199

Did you see trade in values for S4 aluminum watch? $100 wtf.

I've noticed that the trade-in values that Apple is offering for both iPhones and Apple Watches is pretty low right now.

Last year Apple raised the trade-in values on iPhones when sales weren't meeting their expectations. We will have to wait and see how things go this year.

If delivery times don't slip quickly after orders open up, then I would suspect we will see an increase again in trade-in values.

Depending on how picky they are about scratches this might be a good deal. Mine is scratched but I’m not sure if it’s what they call major scratches. If you want to make the most of your upgrade you have to sell before the new model comes out on craigslist or some site like that. Once the new models come out there’s a flood of people selling their old ones and the price goes down

No sleep tracking :(
It’ll be in a new software update

I personally would love the titanium model but I can’t justify spending that much money on a watch that I won’t keep very long. For those that would keep their Apple Watch more than two or three years it might make sense.
That’s true. Ceramic and Hermès models seem like a waste given that software updates may limit longevity. The original Apple Watch and its gold cousins handicapped when the new S1 and S2 models came out, so I feel bad for those who spent top dollars on them.

I purchased a launch day S4 in Stainless steel gold + cellular. Looking back, I wish Apple would have made a non-cellular model in Stainless Gold, as mobile carriers want to charge extra for data plans. I won’t upgrade until S7 or S8, unless there’s a feature that truly justifies an update. Perhaps blood glucose monitoring, continuous blood monitoring or some other lifesaving health feature.

You do realise android phones have always on display on their phones, Right?
You do realize your question doesn’t answer mine, right?
As for the always on display on android, it suffers from burn in, that’s why their always on info (time and date) is constantly moving around display. And it’s turned off (at least in some models) when the phone is in a pocket or laying screen down.

Ordered! I discovered long ago that the key to yearly upgrades to Apple Watch is to purchase the lowest point of entry- the aluminum models. Plus, I imagine my future old self will not hate me as much for not buying the Edition/highest cost model

Screen burn in is a myth really...and the Apple Watch series 5 screen will dim so the screen will never truely be on like it would be like when you use it

The Apple Watch pictured on one of the images got this after 2 years of use without an always on display.

LOL @ the AOD butthurtness in this thread.Personally,I only care to see my AW4 when I'm looking @ it and it always displays when I lift or move my wrist. However,it's nice that there is an option now for those who want it.

But it now explains all of those heads that were exploding the other night when I left the gym.I guess BFS (Blank Face Syndrome) is a thing.Btw,AW4 and my Beats Pro wireless is a great pair. The headroom,EQ,separation, etc is better than I expected. And that's pretty much across all genres.

It is so you don't have to turn your wrist to look at the time. It could in theory save battery life as well. You would not believe how many people complained that it didn't have this. Now I think just as many and maybe the same ones are saying it's not a needed feature. I think it's a neat feature but not absolutely necessary. Either way the Apple Watch will remain the best selling watch for at least the near future.

true, Engadget really has lost the plot.
I was shocked when I visited their website again after some years a while ago and was blasted with feminist propaganda that was only remotely related to tech.

I haven't spent time in the last 5-6 years on Engadget, so I must say that I'm not more informed. I actually went and read the article at The Dirge and left them a missive.

Frankly, I'm feeling hella salty today, because I have had my absolute fill of whiny ass forum posters. I know, it's the internet, I should be prepared. I usually am...there are only so many candyasses I can take in one day though and Dieter's piece hit my limit. "...and it finally makes the Apple Watch a competent timepiece." Uh-huh, spoken like someone who is pissed that the Swiss got their asses handed to them when it comes to "timepieces" or hasn't yet endured some cranky piece of Android Wear yet. Of all the Apple products I use, the Watch is probably the most impressive because it just sits there on my wrist doing its job. Yes, it's a limited job, by it's nature, but isn't that what technology is supposed to do and be?

General editorial hijacking this thread-

As for the haters...riddle me this - Do you realize that you just got a $300 price cut on a dual lens camera system?

That you got a slightly larger iPad with a couple of extras for the same price?

That if you can only bitch about the iPhone, maybe you would be happier in Android land? I know I would rather you bought an Android Phone and went and plagued those people over there. We'll wait while you figure out what version of Android you're using and if your vendor of choice is going to let you upgrade your phone EVER. No, it's okay, we'll wait, you take as much time as you need. All the time in the damn world.

That if you are pissed about no new iPad Pro, you cannot tell time as it has been less than a year since the 2018 was introduced and Apple is on a 15-18 months cadence.

That if you thought this was all boring stuff today, you might do well to spend some time volunteering down in the Bahamas and finding a bit more meaning in your life by seeing how bored those people are trying to just survive and get back on their feet.

End tirade, rant and preaching.

Didn't hear any rumors at all about the always on screen, Apple has been so much better at keeping the Apple Watch a secret than the iPhone. I thought we were still many years away from having an always on screen, if ever, so this was a total shock. I just bought a new Watch last year, which was the first I bought since the very first Watch and never saw a need to upgrade before. I didn't think I'd need to upgrade again for years because the Watch has always been pretty slow to make any relevant improvements, but this feature is absolutely HUGE and I ordered one the min the store was back online, even though I'm going to lose a lot of money by selling my old SS watch to get this. Hopefully it will work as expected.

Well you have to remember some people post just to... I can't remember the word but I think it starts with T. Other than that it's impossible to make everyone happy because people have different needs and wants. Then there's people who can never be happy regardless. Some people are just the glass is half or completely empty type. I love my Apple Each S4 and if Apple gives me the $100 trade in I might upgrade to the S5. It's not for everyone but it works well for me.
