Did Apple say the processor is more efficient? Don't the S4 and S5 have an identical processor?

Hold on... LOL - yeah you're right... WTH am I thinking of? Was it a more efficient video driver or something... since the claimed battery life rating with having AOD would give the same battery life as the 4...

Regardless... I think my entire point is moot now LOL...

I think the S5 has a marginally bigger battery than the S4 - so with the AOD off, it should have BETTER battery life than the S4. Right? This would be compounded by any efficiencies that they have added.

Unfortunately it sounds like this isn't necessarily the case.

Not from my experience no. That said if you are going to switch off AOD might as well just get the series 4.

I'm really impressed with my Series 5. I love it dearly and can't imagine life without it.

But, I chose the Aluminum version this year (after feeling too guilty to upgrade my lovely stainless steel Series 0 until its battery started to fade) specifically to make it psychologically easier to upgrade... if new features come that gave me a bad case of the iWants.

From this one sketchy rumor report OP provides, it's too soon to tell. I don't see a lot in this article that triggers yearning and gotta-have-its. Yet.

For one thing, sleep tracking has been handily provided by any of several excellent third-party apps for years now. Apple's built-in sleep tracking would have to be powerful indeed to provide motivation to upgrade. At least for me.

What could move me to upgrade:
  • Faster processor that doesn't get indigestion when digesting large file-lists of podcasts etc
  • Faster transfers from iPhone apps
  • Better support for totally native podcast applications that don't require a phone app
  • More storage
  • More sensors (pulse oximetry tops my list)
  • A cost-effective sapphire screen option for the aluminum-bodied Watches
  • Significantly improved battery life... as I'm getting good life already and can wear the Watch all day and all night, charging it in the mornings in an hour or 90 minutes as I shower, dress and get ready for the day.
Oh, and there's another thing Apple could do to move me into the "Yes, thank you, I'll head to the Apple Store right now" column: institute an upgrade program like the iPhone's.

If that were the only difference I'd agree.

But, more storage and worldwide emergency notifications for cellular models, even without activation... those swayed me to the S5. And once I had AOD, I was surprised how much I like it. Totally different everyday interaction model: you glance at it and, dang, that thing's a watch, not just an obsidian rectangle on my wrist that needs to be woken-up with a wrist-wiggle or tap.

If the new watch is faster, with more ability for independent use from the phone, (including ability to pair with an iPad) blood oxygen level, along with better battery, I would likely purchase on order day.

I really hope they do a Natural Titanium Edition again. I’ll buy it in a heartbeat. My Ti watch is my favorite Apple purchase in a long time. Still looks almost brand new after taking some abuse since I got it.

If they were to give it the ability to pair with an iPad only - at least the wifi model - that would open up a monstrous market for children and people without an iPhone of their own...

Indeed. I would also like to see the watch as a stand-alone product that can, if one chooses, be linked with the phone or iPad.

Hello all,

I am a series 1 owner and I am ready to jump and get a new watch. Contemplating on just getting the series 5 but should I jump? I am a bit worried in regards to these battery issues. My Series one I use it constantly - limited on how it is- still use it a lot. Do you believe the series 6 would be such a dramatic change from series 5?

Big time lurker first time poster! Be safe all!

try not to read into all the ‘battery issues‘ that you see on sites like this. I can honestly attest I’ve not had any battery issues whatsoever others were experiencing, but my ‘use cases‘ are different from everyone else’s as well. But since were into May, I would also possibly consider waiting until the Series 6 might launch in September. The reason I emphasize the word waiting, it’s possible it could be delayed given the pandemic, but nonetheless, what you hear/read about with battery issues, can also be rectified through watchOS updates.

I really can’t see the point in upgrading every year when the differences are so small. My Series 2 was still popular and doing the job fine up until I got my Series 5. My wife has a Series 4 and there would have been no pint her having the same watch as me as they look the same apart from a few minor differences.

Absolutely. I will upgrade. But I really want second hand on modular face.
For all healthcare field workers, second hand is a must like when checking heart rate.

In fairness, What you consider to be a ‘small upgrade’, might be larger to someone else. It really has nothing to do with ‘every year’, It really depends if you utilize a specific feature that Apple included with the latest model that you may not find value in, but is ‘major‘ to another user. For example, I don’t care for the compass on the Series 5, but AOD might be more significant to somebody else or vice versa. The Apple Watch matured fairly quickly, where it’s not expected to have major upgrades every year. That’s not really how technological advancements are expected in such a niche category say compared to the iPhone, unless we’re talking health advancements, which Apple has escalated very quickly.

Absolutely. I can understand somebody upgrading for a feature that excites them but I don't understand the 'got to have it because its the latest' mentality with the watch as its already a mature product. We are all different though aren't we? If I've paid £399 for a watch with such a short life, I want to get 3 years out of it and these devices last at least that and still hold their own against the current versions. There is so little difference between my Series 5 and my wife's Series 4, part of me regrets not getting the 4 at a discount. I saw a Black Stainless S4 40mm on eBay the other day, hardly worn, bought last August, with 4 sport bands and was £240. I'd never consider a Stainless model usually, but for that price you can't go wrong. The only cons on that for me are the lack of Nike faces and possibly the slight weight increase. I may consider secondhand for my next watch though seeing how much they lose in value.

This loss of value is what keeping me from even considering an upgrade year on year. The AOD wasn’t enough for me to get the series 5 plus the return from selling the 4 is just not worth it. I’d rather keep it until it dies then buy whatever is current at that point.

The series 4 does what I need a smart watch for. I can’t see any feature in the near future that’s going to get me to upgrade. Let’s see though, you never know.

I was a Series 1 owner for a number of years and was used to the rather slow speed. Finally upgraded to a Series 5, and absolutely loved the AOD, slightly larger size, and most importantly, the terrific increase in speed while using it. While sitting in front of our TV for a couple of hours each night, I keep a charger right next to the couch and give it a 45 minute charge, More than enough for wearing it all night (sleep tracking) plus normal usage all day. Absolutely no regrets about the upgrade at all.

You are getting close to the traditional refresh release, so wait for the Series 6 if you have the patience, but definitely grab a Series 5 if you simply want the upgrade now. With the CV19 issues, there could be a delay in the next release cycle so I personally would buy now.

It depends on what they offer.

I went from S3 to S4 and couldn't imagine not having the bigger screen after having it.

Now I can't imagine not have AOD after going from S4 to S5.

If I worked in an Apple Store then you are exactly the sort I customer I would want to see coming through the door. For my own purchases I am very very much against annual upgrades, especially with the Watch. :)

I certainly don’t NEED to upgrade as i already have a good SS series 5 however i really want the SB SS and the talk of better battery life is what i want.

The other features that’s been rumoured aren’t really exciting me though to be honest. I will likely keep the SB SS for longer next year though....i do agree it’s hard to justify upgrading each year certainly for the SS and more expensive models.

Originally I thought the Series 6 Apple Watch would possibly be delayed due to C/19, but I think now that China is really on par back with their economy for the most part, I think we will see the Series 6 launch around that September time frame, but may not be available towards the beginning of October. If anything with ‘Fall
Apple’ products, I suspect they all will launch as normal, but with a give-or-take a month delay.

Yeah, there's nothing stopping Apple from announcing the new watch on time - then taking all the pre-orders and get people amped up even if production is suffering - but - like yourself, I've noticed China supply lines for all kinds of products are back up and running with good capacity...

Honestly - with the way things are this year - I'd expect if the S5 was releasing this year - Apple would have given no announcement and just released it like all the Macbook updates they've done. Incremental stuff. And just a short blurb saying it's released and here are the few incremental changes.

If the S6 truly has some fantastic new features, I see them actually scheduling some sort of live broadcast of its announcement - and then taking at least pre-orders.
