I have a series 4 and just ordered a Series 5.

At this point, the only way I could see myself upgrading to a Series 6 is if they make it thinner - by removing the round hump on the back of the watch, setting it into the watch so the watch sits flush on your wrist.

So for me, just cosmetic as I can't think of a new software feature they could add that I need.

Just a question. Is the Apple Watch that big of an influence in your life that warrants a yearly upgrade cycle?

Influence? You’re not very descriptive here, but some of us have expendable income where we can enjoy the latest/greatest of what Apple offers. For others, they can’t afford that luxury, and that’s OK. That’s why Apple has cheaper options, the people that you see on here upgrading annually, we’re ‘not the norm’, we are the fanatics of Apple who like to have certain features/aesthetic changes with casing materials, ect versus the ‘average consumer‘ who won’t upgrade their Apple Watch on an annual basis Due to XYZ Reason, which I’m assuming you fall into that camp Of what I mentioned before. The good news, as we all have options and different spending limits what interest us.

Series 4 was my first Apple watch - as a test to see if I could get away from mechanical watches I've purchased/worn all my life. AW integrates so well with my Apple products and is literally the device I dreamed of back in the 70's (communicating from your wrist while out in public). I am waiting on my order of a Series 5 ceramic. Aside from the Series 4 model I have, the S5 ceramic is the cheapest watch I've bought in many, many years. It's actually saving me money to just buy a new AW every year now instead of what I usually buy/wear 🤣 , However, if it didn't work into my life so well, I wouldn't bother. But it does, the cellular version for me is again, everything I'd hoped it would be for a long, long time.

I'm just jealous of my children who will live probably 40 years longer than me and get to see all the cool gadgets of the future I won't :( I love technology.

There is another group in between those who can afford to upgrade annually and those who cannot afford to. There are also those who can afford to, but don’t see the point in doing so. I think all three are perfectly acceptable and all are likely fans of the Apple brand too.

Sure, I realize you may not have the money to upgrade annually, that’s understandable, especially the UK isn’t doing very well in their economy. But I still think the majority of consumers realize Apple products are exponentially expensive, and they probably couldn’t afford to upgrade their Apple Watch on an annual basis, especially if you start looking at the stainless/titanium/ceramic models. (I’ve owned over 7 Stainless Apple Watches, it’s a bit ridiculous, so don’t ask😀) but that’s because I have the financial means to do so and the Apple Watch is by far my favorite product they’ve released, Plus, I just like having the latest tech.

My point was, An Apple Watch forum doesn’t even represent .001% of consumers, it’s a literally nonexistent in terms of being practical how average consumers would consider their Apple Watch upgrade annually, I myself being an extreme minority who has owned probably more Apple products than most members on this specific forum. But I totally understand most consumers just don’t see the value, which I respect and in someways, makes complete sense, even though I can be a bit obsessive with tech, that’s just my personality, and well, preference.

If there is a pulse oximeter I would consider it then I would also want greater batt life to wear during sleep.
If no pulse ox, then probably not.
Sleep tracking on its own isn't enough for me to upgrade as I use a CPAP that provides much more sleep data than the watch would.

I don’t think you read my post properly there mate, but never mind .

I did actually, I was just trying to be sensitive, because I thought you mentioned in the iPhone forum that you didn’t have the Monetary means to upgrade annually to certain devices due to the U.K. economy/your job at risk.(It’s ok, there’s nothing to be ashamed about that.) Like I said, Apple products are expensive, not everybody’s gifted the luxury of upgrading annually. The Apple Watch is not cheap by any means, especially start when you start looking at the stainless and migrating towards the titanium/ceramic. And then add in AppleCare and accessories, it can become in a very expensive accessory to the iPhone.

No wrong person, my job is fine. Our market is more Europe/US than UK. I can afford annual upgrades if I want to but I’m too logical with my spending to justify it to myself. This is why I highlighted a third group in between those who can afford to and those who cannot. There are those like myself who are lucky enough to have good jobs where we can buy the things we enjoy, but may not necessarily see the benefit of incremental Apple upgrades.

Apologies. Then it wasn’t you, I thought it was somebody from the UK that I was having a discussion with, but I post a lot too on Macrumors, so I can’t keep track of everything. But now that you mention it, I think I figured out who It was after referencing their post history.

anyways, yes, there is a demographic that can afford to purchase lots of things aside from tech, they just choose not to, because they find value in something else or they don’t see the need to upgrade every year.

I dare say my wife would be a little annoyed if I wasted money replacing a 12 month old Apple Watch that was still perfectly fine though, but that’s another story lol. My buying habits have also changed since having children as priorities are different these days. I’d rather spend more money on them than buy tech often if that makes sense? I also get more enjoyment out of that than I would a new Apple Watch every 12 months and I’m totally honest about that. My series 5 does everything I need from a smartwatch I think and i’ll enjoy it for another 2 years. :)

I’m very lucky in this regard, my life has not changed at all as our business is working as normal. My wife is a carer so both of us are in a position where we are working as normal. I’ve been working at home for about 6 weeks and to be honest i could get away with doing this far more even when all this ends.

I've been working from home for nearly 8 weeks now and my wife has too. The only change really has been my office is now at home and all face to face communications is via Teams lol. I'm a mechanical engineer so 95% of my job is CAD and simulation analysis, so luckily I've escaped being furloughed, whereas manufacturing staff have been in some areas. I think this is the situation for the foreseeable, but at least we are being paid in full. Not interested in a Series 6 AW but am planning on a new iPhone this year. :)

Yeah teams and zoom i feel I’m on that all day through the week.

Which iphone you going for? 5.4 i think will sell really well.

I've used both yeah, Zoom is a bit basic I've found when trying to share things etc. It has felt like 'death by meeting' and I've found people want to talk for much longer than they usually would when face to face. Working longer hours to compensate for lost hours is infuriating lol.

I will get the iPhone 12 6.1" I think. The jump up to OLED and larger storage capacity are a big bonus. Having used an 8+ for nearly 2 years now I wouldn't want to go down in size now that I am used to carrying a larger phone. I think the 5.4" will perhaps be the most popular of the 4 but then those with the XR and 11 might feel the same as me now they've got used to a bigger device, so expect both of these to be selling out very quick.

I feel exactly the same about my Apple Watch 4 minus the wife and kids pressure.

Yep same for me. I work in the software development industry so we can work from anywhere in the world as long as there’s good internet connection. So no change in my work either, if anything, I’m working way more than I would in normal times.

My husband is working from home too and he’s enjoying it. I don’t think he wants to go back to working on site anymore. I am a nurse so like your wife, I’every been working as normal. We‘ve also been lucky with regards to no changes to our income.

I thought I would stick with the series 5 for two years, but if any of the rumours are true about sleep tracking, Oxygen saturation measurements or blood pressure turn out to be true then I will definitely upgrade.

Yep, that's cause for an upgrade for me as well.

Battery life: slightly better no, dramatically better yes (of course). Sleep tracking: I've tried a couple of 3rd party apps that do this, didn't like them. Implementation would have to be a LOT better and results easier to interpret. Blood oxygen: marginally interesting at my age in life, but I can already buy a cheap plastic thingie that slides over a finger. So far I don't see any very compelling hook but I'd be happy to be surprised.
