I think I’m done with these “edition” watches and even SS.

There is simply no point when each year the hardware gets better and better.

Especially with Apple valuing all Apple series 4 watches at $110 to trade in.

Each to their own.

$529 aluminum vs $749 stainless steel so a $220 difference since I’d get the cellular version regardless of case material.

For me it’s worth the ~$18/mo not to worry about dings like I did with aluminum, or see them every time I look at my watch like I did with aluminum.

That’s my rationale.

The jumps in Canadian prices are insane - titanium is $1100! Ceramic is $1700!

Can’t justify paying that for a watch that may last 3-4 years before the battery dies or it’s no longer supported. It’s a third of an iMac!

My wife wants a watch - aluminum it will be!

Ceramic is the most durable correct?
Based on specs alone, that’s the case. My thought is this - scratching the glass is easy, therefore the most durable option is worth a premium. The watch case itself, however, (IMO) doesn’t need to offer the same level of durability. If you’re wearing a watch of any sort, and it experiences a force great enough to damage the case, the watch will be the very least of your concerns! That said, the ceramic option is super cool. If it were priced the same (or even close) as the titanium, I would possibly opt for it just for the uniqueness.

Depending on where you are in Canada, it might be worth a trip south of the border to buy her one. I agree, those prices are absurd. You could get her a stainless model (with the considerably harder sapphire) for $800 (I think that’s still the price). I won’t tell anyone :)

Having Apple swap the battery will cost you like 79 bucks.

Also you can probably expect more like 5-6 years of software support given how powerful the watches have become. My guess is Series 4 and 5 will be dropped at the same time given the similarities of S4 and S5 SiP, so I'd expect 6 years for Series 4 and 5 years for Series 5, at least.

Will be interesting to see whether next year's release of watchOS will continue to support Series 1 and 2, with watchOS 6 they're going into their 4th year now.

I personally am still enjoying my "Series 0" with watchOS 4.x, albeit it can be a bit slow at times. Planning on upgrading to Series 5 though.

How weird. I would have thought the titanium would weigh less than aluminum. No reason to choose titanium over aluminum for weight.

Durability, not solely weight. I am a huge fan of Titanium watches -- like Breitling models, but not ones that need to be replaced every year. Wouldn't it be cool if Apple created a "bare" watch module that could be popped into the case of your choice? Keep the expensive Ti case and swap out the module as needed, like this Omega Speedmaster.

You can replace the battery you know. Apple will do it. It’ll still be a watch in 3-4 years

Yes please.

I’m talking about OS support too

And while you can replace a battery, don’t assume they’ll be easy to get - ask anyone with a 2011 iMac trying to find a graphics card replacement. Speaking from experience as I got burned by the defective card and missed the replacement window.

Then start a class action law suit. It’s a watch. A watch battery should be easy to get and change. Go with that angle.

No, but bash your aluminium watch and it'll dent. I doubt you'll mark the titanium.

What on earth would I be doing to make the watch dent? Odds are you'll probably break your arm before denting the watch...

That would be nice. I would buy a titanium watch if Apple did that for us, but as it is I still don't see a compelling reason to buy anything other than the aluminum watch. This is disposable tech and the expensive watches are nearly as worthless as the cheapest ones a year later. Plus buying the aluminum one makes me feel more inclined to upgrade every year.

Plus it looks amazing! In 5 Apple watches I’ve yet to scratch a case; always the screens.

I’ve scratched the Nike+ S3 case twice on the porcelain soap dish in my bathtub! I need to remove it cause who the hell uses bar soap anymore!?! Yuck.

Titanium itself is very cheap, although more expensive than steel. Any material priced in bulk in terms of "per metric ton" isn't expensive. Even turned into more finished material it's still cheap. E.g. a very quick search just now:

TITANIUM
GRADE/FORM: TI-6-4 BAR
COUNTRY: US
CURRENT PRICE: $26.39/lb

It's a relatively difficult material to work with, so you can't simply predict the price of a bracelet based on the raw material.

That said, I suspect that 90% of the band price would be because it was marketed as a "Veblen good".

Sweet knowledge! Me Veblen thank you I’ve learned something today! Gracias.

I am flexible with smartwatch purchases as I am using a smart band currently. Should I just wait for Apple Watch 6? This one seems uneventful tbh

VERY uneventful! Introducing Apple staff with just their first names no ranking tittle except for 3 or 4 of them. This event seemed more like an inclusion Apple day (now I get why the rainbow Apple logo for this years event). Hate that rainbow and the ideal it pushes whenever Apple uses it ... even more now. Another topic convo of course. New cpu in iPhone, yet NOT in the watch lol really shows 2 things:

Apple needs stronger competition in this space!
Apple is still waiting for new silicon and other hardware that enables new features along with federal approvals on a global scale yo I roduce something very new!

Hermes in space black sounds sweet! Curious of the titanium case comes in space grey?!

I would like to go swimming with the watch, so aluminum for me. Our pool is filled with floridated tap water.

it just looks like a fancy aluminum.

They should have done a polished fire burnt titanium that has the gradient of colors.

Both available here in the UK.
Sometimes I don't understand Apple - why won't they sell them in all markets ??

If I look at our neighbors:

Denmark - no titanium and ceramic (no physical Apple Store)
Norway - no titanium and ceramic (no physical Apple Store)
Sweden - both titanium and ceramic (physical Apple Store present)
Findland - no titanium and ceramic (no physical Apple Store)
Germany - both titanium and ceramic (physical Apple Store present)

Another difference is also that this time the Hermès option is also only available in the same countries as the titanium and ceramic.

I'm just over here wishing I could get an aluminum case with a sapphire screen at a less than stainless steel price. Maybe when pigs fly. :(

or maybe offer SS without LTE (-100$). This year I'll try to get me a SS version just because of sapphire screen. After a year Alu version screen is full of micro and not so micro scratches in my case.

I like the weight though. Anyone else?

I don’t like the aluminium ones as they don’t feel solid.

Yep, weight always gives a feeling of worth.

As for the aluminium ones I don't like them either but it isn't because they don't feel solid it's because they physically aren't solid.
You only need to take a look at the pictures of 2nd hand aluminium Apple Watches on EBay to see how easily they dent, scratch and wear. They look awful.
I'm still wearing a stainless steel S0 Apple Watch which looks immaculate.
Time for an update, which is a shame as the watch looks like new and works fine.
Just doesn't get software updates.
