I'm actually very skeptical about this redesign. The flat edges is not the best design for a object that you wear on your wrist and 45mm is getting really chunky.
The front surface is not necessarily going to be larger though. Flat edges means that the casing bulge from the rounded design won't be there, similar to how iPhone 12 appears to have less overall bezel than the 11 if you take into account the casing. That's going to be especially noticeable for a small device like the watch. The screen might be larger but not necessarily at the expense of an larger size overall.

New watch faces for 1mm extra space? Really? And probably exclusive to the 7 I’d imagine. I hope they won’t pursue that path. Of course, I wish they would open up watch faces entirely. I dislike about 90% of the options available.
The 1mm is diagonal so there could be an noticeable difference in screen size depending on the aspect ratio and roundedness of the corners. The 3 to 4 transition was only 2mm but still produced a noticeable increase in screen real-estate.

Totally agree, this reeks of a blatant cash grab. And stuff like this is why they’ll never open up the watch face development — someone might clone one of their “exclusive” faces.

don’t know about you but I don’t base my watch purchase on the amount of faces available.

The watch face I really want is a simple 3 x 3 or maybe 4 x 4 grid of complications/icons (probably 3 x 3 for me since I have the 40mm model).

I like my main watch face to be one of the simple classic ones with relatively few complications (Utility is my current favourite) and to get to my most frequently used apps I find it more convenient to swipe right to a second clock face with lots of complications that I use to launch apps. I find that quicker and more convenient than using the app launcher or even the dock. At the moment I use Infograph Modular for my "app launcher" page but that only gives me 5 complications that I can program. I know that Infograph has 8 complications but it doesn't look like an app launcher page, it's basically a cluttered watch face, so I don't find it as intuitive. A simple grid of icons would be my perfect solution to quickly launch 9 of my most used apps.

Most mechanical watches have flat edges and are just fine on the wrist. There are also many mechanical watches out there much larger than the Apple Watch, and they are popular, so there's definitely a market for it.

Apple Watch faces are BORING. Please Apple come up with SOMETHING NEW. The options are so stale and stagnant at this point.

that didnt address any particular reason why a new design is needed, and specifically skipped every point made about why a new design doesnt make a difference
Because none of it matters......it’s not about form following function. Apple makes premium devices and design / style has ALWAYS counted. More so with portable (and wearable) tech.

If there wasn’t a “need” to change we would still be using iPhone 6 looking phones. Yuck! That is also the design language that the AW is based upon. New Apple products use the flat language. Only the low rent iPad will be using the old design language after September. You can continue to enjoy your older AW, but it will be out of style and dated the second the new flat design is shipping to customers.

Suggestions?

There are only so many ways to cleanly and clearly express time without infringing too much on existing horological face designs.

"out of style"

apple watch "style" is purely irrelevant. it will be "cool" to anyone who *might* wander a gander to notice and that subject will be moved on from immediately.

i had a SS s0 aw and upgraded to the s4; it was cool, fine, but i didnt care about the design once i put it on, because what is on the display is all that matters. i have an s6 now and still dont care.

probably will get an s7, and further not care. the only time i've noticed and given compliment on watch design is when i see a nice timepiece on someone's wrist. something like a nice omega watch attracts attention and has "style."

aw is the cookie cutter everyone can have it for $300 watch

The Apple Watch is the one product they have that really needs an aesthetic overhaul. It’s thick, blocky and not very visually appealing. I know some wear watches and have watch collections for fashion reasons. I don’t know why Apple has crapped the bed on the look of this product when they’re so obsessed with visual design.

because people who buy watches for collections buy nice, unique watches. they're called a timepiece for a reason. apple watches are not going to be this. they're cheap (comparatively) and are supposed to be a phone on your wrist, not something to be paired with a nice suit or dress.

Nothing unique really about it. It’s a block on your wrist. Might as well strap up an iPod nano.

People don’t wear their MacBooks either, but at least more effort is put into the aesthetics than the Apple Watch. Apple has put form over function in most of their products (ex. obsessed with thinness) but the one product that could be considered jewelry they make pretty ugly. Other watch companies can make a nice looking smart watch and so should Apple.

In short, the only reason to get the latest model is to have the latest model.

Actually, It’s an extra reason to get the latest model.

For most it will be the only reason. I don’t dispute this.

but Apple exists to sell stuff

Lots of people care. These forums are full of people who care and wouldn’t be caught dead carrying an iPhone 8+, let alone a iPhone 11 Pro. We will see examples of this as the 12 moves to 13 in a few weeks.

I don’t know why you bring up mechanical wristwatches. An Omega is fine and all, but is more a display of wealth (or lack thereof as it’s not a AP,PP, or Rolex) than of any particular style. If this was all about telling time, everyone would be in a urethane G-Shock.

Doesn't make much sense. A 44mm Series 6 won't get those new watch faces, despite having a larger screen than the 41mm Series 7?
I don't see why screen size matters in general. A watch face should be compatible with all sizes.

Some people might care but no one can tell what model of phone you've got once it's in its silicon case or leather wallet.

"Besides cosmetic changes, the Apple Watch Series 7 is expected to include improved performance and battery life."
Try reading the article before crying...
To be fair, a larger battery may not necessarily result in better battery life.

Features like cellular capabilities and always-on displays seem to suggest that Apple is satisfied with the Apple Watch effectively offering 18 hours of usage a day (based on the assumption that most users charge their watch overnight as they sleep), and are not seeking to radically overhaul this aspect. I suspect that even if a bigger battery is used, the extra battery life may go towards powering other features or sensors, rather than resulting in a flat increase in battery life.

In this regard, I don't expect the Apple Watch to see much improvement in terms of battery life.

Lots of people can tell unless you use some bulky playskool / otter OC case. And nobody except grandmas use cases in their AW. It is very visible and apparent which generation you are still wearing. (Case shape hasn’t changed through version 6, but size and materials are a dead giveaway)
