Tbh I’m thinking my series 3 could go another year. Especially as Apple still sells in new LOL
Exactly. If I had not dropped my series 3 and shattered the screen a few weeks ago I would still be using it another year (though it is crazy they are still selling it as a new watch..SMH).

Maybe I misheard the presentation, but there was a pretty significant bump on the iPhone chip...and even the watch chip was improved...one component, the CPU stayed the same, but the rest was updated...similar to S4>S5, same CPU but added gyroscope and some other features...it does get incremental at some point.

from the front page Macrumors article... The ‌iPhone 13 Pro‌, or iPhone14,2, earned a Metal score of 14216, a 55 percent increase compared to the 9123 Metal score earned by the ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌.
Nope. They attempted to make it sound like that. But, you need to listen again. The performance numbers given were compared to the Leading Competitor's phone. This was the first year I know of that they didn't compare the new chip to the previous apple chip. :(

Correct. Plus they didn't exactly say that you get 8 hours of charge in 8 minutes. They said that you get 8 hours of Sleep Tracking in 8 minutes which is going to be a different use case than 8 hours of daytime use.

I am just sad that this plus a slightly bigger screen are the only improvements over a serves 6. But, I know that will be enough for some. :)

8 hours of sleep tracking only needs a “have a shower” worth of charging anyway.

Anyone think we’re just stuck with 18 hour battery for the next few years until a new battery tech comes out? That’s the only hardware upgrade I really want. If series 8 & 9 will just continue to be 18 hours, I’ll likely go ahead and get the 7. No way to know, but it sure would be nice to!

I wonder if the new battery tech that Whoop is using now would help?
I'm basically upgrading since I need a new battery anyways. After 2 years with the S5, my battery is already at only 83% health. It costs $79 just to replace the battery with Apple.

Not sure how they calculate 20% more screen. For the 44-45, I calculated 16%.

didn’t calculate the 40-41.
That's not how they calculate the screen size change. the bezels have been reduced...you can see the change in the images. They use actual screen that emits light to calc size change

A watch cannot accurately measure blood pressure. Period.
As a physician I advice my patients to buy a blood pressure machine with a cuff that they can apply around their arm. Gadgets that claim to measure blood pressure at the wrist are also often inaccurate.
I don't think it'd need to be extremely accurate to be quite useful. I have a cuff, and there's no way I'm using that very often. (my bp is fine, turns out I'm not a big fan of doctors offices)

My watch right now only manages to do background blood oxygen readings occasionally through the day, and then also while sleeping. One needs to be very still for the reading to work, and I'm not, generally, unless sleeping. If background blood pressure readings worked the same way, that'd be great.

If I got blood pressure readings each day I could scan at my leisure, even if they were off by 20%, that'd still be a big improvement on -no- bp readings that I currently get, because using that cuff is a major pain. And literally, as well. If I noticed a trend, I could follow up with the cuff.

I calculated the pixels

I am happy that they are still selling the series 3 as a new watch. It means extended support for WatchOS upgrades.

I have a Black Stainless Steel Series 3. Because it is Stainless Steel it has the cellular radio and more storage than the base model that is still on sale so WatchOS upgrades are still easy. I am not upgrading yet because the battery is still working great, the Watch itself is in perfect condition and it is the Black Stainless Steel version which Apple doesn't offer anymore. The black finish is very scratch resistant as is the Sapphire Crystal.

Kinda surprised at the comments in here. Yes, the screen is the only difference, but for many people the screen is the watch's main feature. What have they added in the past few years that was more worthy of an upgrade?

A better display is almost always a reason to upgrade for me. I am a little worried, though, that people will notice I bought a S7 when I just got the S6 last year. It makes me look wasteful of my money. Usually I am pretty good about my purchases (but Apple products are hard for me resist).

Will all the talk about smaller bezels I was expecting less of a size increase but 5-10% is significant. Would have preferred it all to be screen though.
I wonder if the size increase will mean the larger size won’t fit me. I have small wrists that just barely can handle the S6 size. I love larger displays but I don’t want it to look stupid.

It kinda seems like the odd number series watches are now S-lite cycles. Series 5 also only got improvements to the display (always on) and a minor new feature (compass) while carrying along the same processor from the previous generation.

Was really hoping for a redesign to replace my Series 4, as I want the always on feature. Probably gonna just pick up a used Series 6 instead. Especially since it we may not see the Series 7 release until November or December.
I consider a new display a redesign.

Wow, and I thought last year’s bump was minor. This is basically nothing except a 1 mm bigger display.
The watch case is only 1mm bigger however the bezels are also 40% thinner so the screen is more than 1mm larger. You can’t get 20% more pixels with only 1mm.

By your logic the largest 12.9 iPad Pro got a downgrade from 2017 to 2018 because the case was smaller than the predecessor because they shrunk the bezels but didn’t change the screen size.

Well do they know you have an S6? It looks like an S4 so maybe they think you're upgrading from an S4.

And the watch needs to rest between the two bones in the wrist to work. Wrist cuffs are not that accurate. When I go in for an infusion, I always remind them that the reading on that thing is worthless. I have a Withings cuff that works fine, results via their app to Apple health.

who else was surprised that the watch wasn't already dustproof?
Dust "ish" proof - but defintely not building dust proof unfortunately. I think the certification is really high now, so you can drill away at those brick and mortar walls all you want!

As much as I do think it's an incremental update, there isn't a strong enough reason to update from my S5 - which aligns with my typical thoughts on the Apple Watch - it's a 3 year upgrade cycle. Next year will likely be the time to upgrade my S5 (especially if some of the new rumored health additions are true).

Ironically, Im an upgrade the phone every year guy (even with just increments), but I can't justify upgrading the watch every year, and my S5 is still performing amazingly well.

Same, i'm an every year man for the phone - it's more of a traditional than anything, i've had everyone since the first. But as I use it caseless I find the fresh screen with new oleophobic coating, brand new battery, new handset and new colour are often enough but then I enjoy all the new features as well, even if they are small.

I even upgrade MacBooks and iPads very regularly too - but i'm still here with my Series 4 Watch. I think the loss in value for the watches has been more too a £1000 SS strapped watch is worth almost nothing a year later, so there's no point in selling it. I am looking to buy the S7 though as it's a bigger jump from my S4 - though i'll have no quarms buying a S8 if it adds something killer.

I just am still irritated that the sizes of the watch bands haven't increased to a larger size for those of us with a 23cm wrist. yeah, it is frustrating. I have a band that is the velcro and at 49 a pop a few limited colors if I put it on very carefully, but it is generally tight. I can wait for a watch with more sensors and stuff. My watch works and I get a fullday's battery usage and it is the cellular (6).

I won’t be surprised if the final S7 comes with little tweaks not yet mentioned.

I really liked the idea of a redesigned Apple Watch and all the rumors about bigger battery and the rumored explorer edition. So the event with the big surprise made me sad. But now I‘m glad it will still be rounded and with the bigger display it looks beautiful. And for what the watch is used for the flat design wouldn’t be very practical anyway..
Can’t wait to pre-order it!

I am disappointed that there is not an updated SE. All these medical functions are great but I don't want to pay for them. I have a 5 and would have upgraded to a 7 SE but I don't see it. Maybe later.
