This is clearly a contingency design. It has the new display size and glass but in the body style of the previous watches. Apple prototypes all sorts of design styles so it’s not a stretch that this was one they prototyped and had shelved.

It’s a quick and safe design that they know they can quickly put into production. Production leaks are always months behind what is happening so the time table isn’t that insane to say that they scrapped the redesign for what we saw today.

There is enough evidence out there that this very plausible. Someone already linked to the 9to5Mac article covering a lot of it. This Series 7 is NOT the original series 7 that Apple wanted to launch. If they can solve the rumored production problems I bet we will see the actual redesign next year with the Series 8.
Personally, I think the flat edge design consensus was the rumor mill breathing their own exhaust…
